Nokia N-8, N-SeriesIn a bid to catch up with the lost time in touchscreen smart phones, Nokia will soon launch its latest N-series mobile phone N8.

By the end of September 2010, it will launch N8 globally, including India. To be priced at around $470 (Rs 22,500) plus taxes, Nokia N8 is a touchphone with many new innovative features.

The 3G and HSDPA enabled phone with 3.5 inch AMOLED touchscreen has an excellent high resolution screen for sharp visual effect. It is fitted with 12 mega pixel camera and can shoot video in HD Ready (720p) format. But the most important feature, which the company claims a first in any mobile phone, is the HDMI port in the phone which can be used to play a high definition video clip or full length movie from the phone’s storage memory through a television screen with surround sound.

In a pre-launch product demo to Deccan Herald at Nokia’s Research Centre in Bangalore, Head of Solution Marketing, Mobile Computing Zairus Master demonstrated this excellent quality of N8.

Another first-time feature, Nokia calls it ‘USB on the Go’, is the ability of the device to recognise flash-based mass memory device (or pen drive) and to read and write from it. In simple terms it means that an user can connect his pen drive with N8, listen to music or watch a movie from it either on the phone’s screen or on a TV screen. It also allows one to dump data files from the phone to pen drive.

This feature will allow an user to carry and play thousands of music files, hundreds of video files and games in a USB drive and play it through his mobile, whenever and where ever he wants,” Master said. With an internal memory of 16 GB and expandable memory of 48 GB, the phone itself can store a huge number of data file.

As N8 runs on Symbian3 operating system with an ARM11 680 MHz processor and 3D Graphics HW accelerator, the phone’s touch screen functions work really fast. It also allows the user to setup 3 home screens that can be configured easily depending on the usage for work, entertainment and social networking. Nokia claimed that N8 runs on a sealed Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery that has a stand-by time of up to 390 hours, talk time of up to 12 hours and music play time up to 50 hours.
