The NHL Guardian Project: What’s not to love ?

The views of this wonderful piece of writing do not reflect the views of TSN or anyone else who pays me, because if they did this would not be nearly as fun.

I have a confession to make, but before I get to that I’ll tell you a bit about myself.

I am a lover of all things gangsta. I still wear my pants with a slight sag, my vocabulary has a steady arsenal of ‘dope’, ‘hype’, and of course the ’n-bomb’ any chance I get. That is what makes this confession so difficult.

Okay here goes…..I….am….wow….this is tough….I am a comic book nerd.

There, I said it. ( Read The Guardian Project more... )

NHL Announces "The Wild" Guardian Project Superhero

The National Hockey League today announced the Minnesota Wild's character in the NHL's Guardian Project, a collection of superheros created and developed by comic legends by Stan Lee, Chargin, and Jake Shapiro that depict each team in the NHL. Each NHL Guardian is derived from its corresponding hockey team, complete with special powers representative of each team and city.

Minnesota's character, "The Wild," earned its announcement by defeating Dallas' "The Star" in the Guardian 30 Match-Up Facebook challenge, an online contest where fans voted to select which NHL team's superhero they wanted to be revealed. The full unveiling of all 30 Guardian superhero characters within the Guardian Project will be held in a special presentation during the 2011 NHL All-Star Game presented by Discover in Raleigh, N.C., on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. ET broadcast live on VERSUS. Heroes of the NHL's Guardian Project take on their foe at today's All-Star game

Coming from the mind of legendary comic book creator Stan Lee, the Guardian project features thirty different superheroes, one for each NHL team. Calgary's "Flame" can summon a fiery stampede. Controlling the element of fire, he can shoot lava balls from his fingers and has a deadly fiery eye blast. Perhaps he can help protect the blue line, too. ( Read The Guardian Project more... )

The NHL Guardian Project origin story: Behind the scenes of hockey's most controversial new marketing effort

Adam Baratta works with superheroes, but doesn't need mutant powers of perception to assess the initial reaction to the NHL's Guardian Project.

"I understand what's happening right now. We're getting negative feedback from some of the hockey purist bloggers," said Baratta, chief creative officer for Guardian Media Entertainment.

For the last few weeks, the NHL has been releasing images and videos detailing 30 superheroes created by comics legend Stan Lee and Guardian Media Entertainment -- with designs and abilities representative of each NHL team and city. Many hockey fans have greeted this bold marketing initiative with clever ridicule or outright scorn, rhetorically pummeling these characters like a Marvel piñata on message boards, blogs and social media. From the NHL Guardian Project we present: The Panther

The Panther is all South Beach fun and youthful exuberance. What would you expect from a character that routinely drinks from the fountain of youth? The other Guardians are constantly on him to take things a little more seriously, but to no avail. He's the one used to spending his days hanging out at the beach and nights hitting up the hottest clubs in the world. ( Read The Guardian Project more... )
