The Chicago Code

How Will 'The Chicago Code' Rate In Its Premiere? (Poll)

The Chicago Code premieres tonight after House on Fox and will face new episodes of the duo of Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly on CBS, the second half of The Bachelor on ABC, a new episode The Cape on NBC and a new Gossip Girl on The CW.

At least for the last several year, the network that aired the Super Bowl on Sunday night saw a boost to its Monday night lineup the following night. Will the streak continue for Fox?

It’s probably worth noting that the last few Super Bowls have all featured games that either were very close heading into the fourth quarter or got close in the fourth quarter. ( Read Chicago Code more... )

'The Chicago Code' recap: Don't expect 'The Shield'

After stumbling upon a trailer for Fox’s newest cop drama, “The Chicago Code,” my brain came to a knee-jerk and admittedly fan boy level conclusion.

“Oh, boy! It’s ‘The Shield’ Part 2!”

Can you blame me? Skim that trailer quickly and you see a rough-handed detective tossing a suspect around with reckless abandon, a stiff-jawed female police administrator determined to change her department’s culture, a seedy politician who might be up to no good, and Shawn Ryan’s name in big block letters. The Chicago Code, 9 p.m., Fox

“Teresa Colvin, the city's first female superintendent, petitions for a corruption task force to investigate an entrepreneur-turned-politician; Colvin's ex-partner, Jarek, investigates a suspicious murder with his new partner, Caleb.” This has been getting raves from critics. That said, it stars Jennifer Beals, who is 2 degrees of separation away from the zero-talent Andie MacDowell in my book. ( Read Chicago Code more... )

A Chicago Code Case Study: The 32nd Ward Aldermanic Race

Note: The Examiner requested an article along the “Chicago Code” theme. Specifically they asked I write about politics and corruption. At the time I had nothing to write on, as I am sitting out of this cycle. However the Progress Illinois article on the election tricks being played in the 32nd ward caught my eye. Since I do not live in the 32nd Ward, nor have I ever met or spoken to any of the 32nd ward candidates or the 32nd Ward Alderman Waguespack, I figured this would be the best, most objective ward for me to write on. The 32nd Ward is also a filming location for the TV series Chicago Code. ( Read Chicago Code more... )

TV Tonight: The Chicago Code

Ideally, TV critics should judge new shows without regard to whether they run on cable or broadcast TV. In practice, our insider-y knowledge of the differences and the tensions between the two creeps in. Arguably, some cable shows get a pass for recurrent themes—the brooding antihero, &c.—that are every bit as much as overused as cop procedurals are on CBS.

Conversely, sometimes network shows get graded on a curve, or, like Fox's promising but imperfect Lone Star, get praised for their daring where they might have been more unsparingly critiqued on cable. ( Read Chicago Code more... )

'The Chicago Code' review: New life in the cop show

This hasn't been an especially good year for new shows, so saying that a new series is one of the best this season doesn't set a terribly high bar.

But we're going to go ahead and say that "The Chicago Code" is, in fact, one of the best new series to hit the air this season, and that would be true in a better year for television as well. It's extremely well cast, uses its Windy City locations beautifully and has an energy that grabs you pretty much from the first scene. Monday nights are really, really crowded, but you need to make room for this show. ( Read Chicago Code more... )
