'20/20' Exclusive: Kati Kim on Her Family's Harrowing Ordeal

It was a story that touched everyday Americans and prompted the biggest search-and-rescue mission in Oregon's history: The disappearance of the Kim family.

The Kims went missing on Thanksgiving 2006. Husband James, wife Kati and their two young daughters, Sabine and Penelope, had been on a road trip when a wrong turn left them desperately lost in the Oregon wilderness. ( Read Kati Kim more... )

Wrong Turn: The Kim Family's Harrowing Ordeal

Kati was a 21-year-old college student in Seattle when she met 26-year-old James Kim during a road trip with friends though Northern California. They married in Las Vegas in 1999. "He was the cutest thing I'd ever seen in my entire life! We got matching tattoos, and that was pretty much how we met. We were inseparable after that," Kati said. Kati Kim story - anybody watching tonight

I hope this has not already been posted but I'm in a hurry and don't have time to search......I'm DVR'ing it BTW.

Kati Kim and her husband were the parents lost in the Oregon wilderness with two small kids about four years ago. The father went for help (after about 8 days) and died from hypothermia. Kati and her two small children survived.

When asked about the experience I remember reading that she said she nursed both kids during the ordeal. ( Read Kati Kim more... )

A very sad story indeed but one that seems preventable. Since I was not there and certainly not faced with such adversity, I will not pass judgement on their decisions. I do feel that the first morning would have been a good time for him to go back the way he came. I found it totally perplexing on why in the world the man would burn the tires when he was in a forest full of wood. I am sure to him it must have seemed logical but to me it seems very irrational. Also I understand they had a GPS in the car, granted it was an early model, but I believe had he been using it to start with, he would not have made that fateful wrong turn. So sad and my heart goes out to the family.
