Len Lesser Dies, Aged 88

Len Lesser has passed away at the age of 88.

TMZ reported that the actor died on Wednesday morning of complications from pneumonia. He had been diagnosed with cancer.

Lesser's daughter Michelle told CNN: "It was very peaceful. He was a great grandpa, and an amazing father. He had a heart of gold - and a sense of humor of platinum." ( Read Len Lesser more... )

Len Lesser, 88, a veteran character actor best known for his recurring role in the 1990s as Uncle Leo on the hit NBC-TV comedy "Seinfeld," died Wednesday in Burbank, publicist Laura Stegman said. He had pneumonia and cancer.

Starting in the early 1950s, Lesser built a reputation for mostly playing the heavy in dozens of movies and hundreds of TV appearances, while nurturing his love of the theater. Actor Len Lesser, best known for his role as Uncle Leo on 'Seinfeld,' is dead, the Associated Press reports. The veteran character actor died at home in Burbank, California from cancer-related pneumonia. He was 88.

In a statement, Lesser's daughter, Michele Lesser, said, "Heaven got a great comedian and actor today.... Thank you to all the people who helped make my father's last journey special, and surrounded with love. The doctors, nurses, and staff have been outstanding, and Dad was in phenomenal hands. Lesser made more than 500 film, television, and stage appearances in a career spanning from 1949 to 2009, CNN reports. He appeared on a number of hit shows, such as Get Smart, All in the Family, The Munsters, Bonanza, ER, and Everybody Loves Raymond. LOS ANGELES Feb 16 (Reuters) - Actor Len Lesser, who starred on "Seinfeld" as Jerry's eccentric, shoplifting Uncle Leo, died on Wednesday after a battle with cancer. He was 88.

A friend told Reuters Lesser was admitted to a rehabilitation center near his home in the city of Burbank several weeks ago, and died peacefully after breakfast.
