Marvin Sease, R&B Singer, is Dead at 64

NEW YORK (CBS) "Ghetto Man" soul singer Marvin Sease has died in Vicksburg, Miss., at the age of 64.

Born in South Carolina, Sease got his start in the gospel circuit but moved into R&B when he formed his own blues band.

His career took off in 1986 when he released a self-titled alubum with the popular "Ghetto Man" track on it on his own Early Label.

Marvin Sease dies; soul singer was 64

Marvin Sease, a southern soul performer known for his sexually explicit songs on the so-called southern chiltlin' circuit, died Feb. 8 at age 64 in Vicksburg, Miss., reportedly from pneumonia.

His biggest hit was the 1987 song "Candylicker" of which Variety's obit said, "Without the benefit of airplay, this almost single-entendre celebration of sex became a smash hit, and Sease took its title as his professional nickname."

The music magazine further said "his funky, unblushing songs cemented his status as an enduring attraction on the black club circuit" -- something that can also be said of fellow southern soul performers Denise LaSalle, Bobby Rush and Theodis Ealey. ( Read Marvin Sease more... )

R&B Singer Marvin Sease Dead at 64

Today is another sad day for the World of music, as we have learned that American R&B singer Marvin Sease has died today at age 64.

According to online reports, Sease passed away at Vicksburg, Mississippi just eight days before turning 65. Although it was rumored that Sease was suffering from pneumonia, the exact cause of death has not been revealed yet.

Marvin started his career as a gospel singer with diverse groups at a young age, but when he was 20 he moved to New York and there he joined the Gospel Crowns. But he quickly decided that he wanted to form his own R&B group and along with his three brothers he formed the band Sease. ( Read Marvin Sease more... )

Marvin Sease. (Memphis, Tennessee) Blues legend Marvin Sease died today at 64. Sease started his career with a gospel group called the Five Gospel Crowns out of Charleston, South Carolina. After singing with them, Marvin then left at age 20 settling into New York.

There he joined another gospel group called the Gospel Crowns. Marvin left the gospel circuit to form his own R&B group. In this group Marvin Sease was accompanied by his own three brothers and named the backing band Sease. ( Read Marvin Sease more... )
