Albert Pujols, Cardinals fail to reach new contract agreement

(Reuters) - The St. Louis Cardinals and their slugger Albert Pujols failed to reach a contract agreement by the first baseman's self-declared deadline on Wednesday, leaving open the chance he will become a free agent after this season.

Pujols, a three-time National League Most Valuable Player, has said he would break off talks until the 2011 season ends and a major league source confirmed that negotiations had ceased, baseball's website (www.mlb.com) said.

The 31-year-old Dominican, who could become a free agent in the next off-season, had been seeking a 10-year deal worth about $300 million, according to media reports. ( Read Pujols Contract more... )

TAMPA, Fla. -- The New York Yankees have no plans to look into Albert Pujols' availability, a baseball official with knowledge of the team's thinking said.

The Cardinals and Pujols failed to agree to a new contract by Wednesday's imposed deadline. The Yankees are always rumored to be in the mix for big-name players, but the official said the Yankees have no place to put Pujols.

Albert Pujols, Cardinals Contract Deadline Passes With No Deal

JUPITER, Fla. — The deadline for Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals to reach a new contract agreement passed Wednesday with no new deal, making it likely the three-time MVP will test the free-agent market after the season.

"We are greatly disappointed at this outcome," Cardinals chairman William DeWitt Jr. said at a news conference. "We will revisit it again following the 2011 season, at which time we will again make every effort to keep him as a Cardinal."

Pujols, a nine-time All-Star, is the only player in major league history to hit 30 or more home runs each of his first 10 seasons – all with the Cardinals, the franchise he has said in the past he wants to remain with for the rest of his career. ( Read Pujols Contract more... )

Halftime: Favre and Aaron, Pujols' deal, Trump's chance

There's speculation floating that Brett Favre wants to make amends with Aaron Rodgers. But CBS Sports suggests that this year's Super Bowl MVP has no intention of taking a belated congratulatory call from the man he replaced as Packers quarterback.

If so, Rodgers might want to rethink that. Because if Favre resorts to texting an apology there's no telling what might show up on Rodgers' phone. ( Read Pujols Contract more... )

Could Pujols Play the Role of Piazza?

It was a Friday afternoon on May 22nd, 1998. The night before the Mets beat Cincinnati 6-1 behind a complete game by Masato Yoshii. The team was hovering around .500 and only 13,766 showed up at Shea Stadium that night. Everything changed, however, as the Mets made one of their boldest moves in team history acquiring Mike Piazza from the Florida Marlins for prospects. Three days later the Mets beat Milwaukee in front of over 47,000 fans. Two years later they were taking on the Yankees in the Subway Series. If anyone told a Mets fan that Friday afternoon what the near future held they wouldn’t have believed it. ( Read Pujols Contract more... )

Pujols-Cards contract talks end without deal

JUPITER, Fla. -- Albert Pujols will not sign a new contract with the Cardinals this spring. Negotiations came to an end on Wednesday morning, more than an hour prior to the slugger's self-imposed 11 a.m. CT Wednesday deadline. Thus, as he has said, he will break off all contract talks until after the season ends.

"We made every effort to extend his contract," Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. "We have agreed with him not to discuss it until after the season. We will revisit it again following the 2011 season, at which time we'll again make every effort to keep him as a Cardinal." ( Read Pujols Contract more... )

Mark Teixeira, Ryan Howard and an Albert Pujols Contract

Tick… tick… tick… In just a few short hours, Albert Pujols’ self-imposed deadline to reach a new long-term contract with the St. Louis Cardinals will expire, and with it, the man that many see as the game’s best player will put off talks until just after the World Series. In numerous reports, word has been that Pujols and his agent Dan Lozano, have been seeking an “A-Rod-type” deal – 10-years, and in excess of $200 million. The problem? It’s not just the large sum attached to the contract, but really, the number of years in the deal. ( Read Pujols Contract more... )

Albert Pujols, Cardinals Reportedly Far Apart In Contract Talks

With Albert Pujols looking to report to Spring Training on the 16th, and with Pujols having set a Spring Training deadline for contract negotiations, time is running out awful fast for the Cardinals to get anything done. Report: Albert Pujols, Cardinals Unlikely to Reach Deal on Contract Extension Before Deadline

It is amazing how one player can determine the fate of an entire organization.

That's the situation the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves in, with Albert Pujols unlikely to sign a contract extension before the deadline Pujols and his agent set, according to SI.com.

The Cardinals' star player set Feb. 16, the day he reports to spring camp, as the deadline to reach a deal with his former team. Pujols is looking for a contract similar to the 10-year, $275 million deal the Yankees struck with Alex Rodriguez, but the Cardinals aren’t on the same page.

Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt explained back in November that Pujols' age (31) would make a ten-year deal a big risk, since no one can predict how well Pujols will play as he gets older. He said a six-year contract is more plausible. The two parties now have one week to come to an agreement. ( Read Pujols Contract more... )
