Thumb down: Florida continues to lead the nation in shark attacks

ONE IS TOO MANY: Shark attacks in Florida were down last year for the fourth straight year, from a decade average of 23 to 13, according to the recently released annual report by the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File.

But Florida still led the nation in attacks last year and it takes just one to cause terrible tragedy, such as that which happened on the Treasure Coast. Last February, Stephen Howard Schafer, 38, of Stuart, died after being attacked by a bull shark while surfing south of Stuart Beach. His death was one of only six fatal shark attacks last year worldwide. ( Read University of Florida more... )

Diamyd Medical: University of Florida Research Foundation Initiates Court Case

The University of Florida Research Foundation Inc. (UFRF) has filed a lawsuit in United States federal district court in Florida against Diamyd Medical (STO:DIAMB)(Pink Sheets:DMYDY) claiming that UFRF is entitled to a percentage of the license fee paid to Diamyd Medical by Ortho-McNeil-Jansen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OMJPI). Diamyd Medical has licensed certain rights from UFRF, and these rights were among the rights that Diamyd Medical sublicensed to OMJPI. Diamyd Medical is working with its U.S. legal counsel to settle this matter.

The outcome of this matter is deemed not to have a material impact on Diamyd Medical. ( Read University of Florida more... )

New leadership at Ave Maria University

Jim Towey, who served as director of faith-based and community initiatives under President George W. Bush before becoming president of St. Vincent College in Pennsylvania, has been named president and CEO of Ave Maria University in Florida.

On July 1, Tom Monaghan, the founder of Domino’s Pizza, will retire from the position of CEO but remain the university’s chancellor. Nick Healy, the university’s president, will also retire and become president emeritus. Both are 73. ( Read University of Florida more... )

First black woman accepted to MD-PhD program at UF

TALLAHASSEE — Brittney Newby, a Florida A&M University alumna, recently became the first African-American woman to be admitted into the University of Florida’s MD-PhD program. Newby, an Atlanta native, graduated from FAMU with the highest honors in spring 2009 with a bachelor’s in chemistry and was accepted into UF’s prestigious program Jan. 18. University Of Florida Swimmers Arrested: Lily Ramirez, Daniela Victoria Caught Shoplifting

Two junior swimmers at the University of Florida were arrested on Saturday for shoplifting in Orlando and have been suspended indefinitely by the team, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Lily Ramirez and Daniela Victoria were caught at The Florida Mall by the Orange County Sherriff's Office.

Both face two charges of "misdemeanor petty theft" after admitting to taking a pair of jackets which cost $130 total from Nordstrom's. ( Read University of Florida more... )
