Washoe County School District, Assembly Democrats today unveiled a bill, they recognized that jobs would open a large hole in the budget proposed by Governor Brian Sandoval. Assemblywoman Debbie Smith, D-Reno, is preparing to introduce a bill, it was the craft since last summer that would allow school districts to use part of their reserve funds to finance the rehabilitation of schools aging. School bill would punch hole in Nevada budget

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Gov. Brian Sandoval swiftly denounced a bill Tuesday that would allow school districts to use bond reserve money to fund school improvements, saying it's a budget buster that would leave a gaping hole in his spending plan.

Sandoval proposed using bond reserve money in his State of the State speech in January. On Tuesday, Assembly Democrats unveiled a similar measure that would reduce from 12 months to six the amount districts are required to maintain in payment reserve accounts. Incline public schools closed Wednesday due to latest winter storm

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — The winter storm that started Tuesday night and continues to hammer the Trtucklee/Tahoe region has forced the closure of Incline's public schools for Wednesday.

Washoe schools weigh capital budget options

Washoe County school officials are grappling with a dilemma over one of Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposals to help close the $3 billion budget deficit: diverting money from school district’s capital fund reserves at the expense of building projects.

The school district’s board of trustees debated Tuesday the risk of alienating the trust of voters who approved the bonds to pay for school upgrades and new construction against leaving a $400 million hole in the governor’s proposed budget and perhaps incurring even deeper cuts than the 9.2 percent the governor called for.

The district’s legislative analyst Craig Hulse said the governor proposed in his budget to lower the capital reserve ceiling from 100 percent of debt obligation to 50 percent to use that money to offset deeper cuts in the general fund. ( Read Washoe County School District more... )
