Dustin PennerKings acquire left wing Dustin Penner from Edmonton

The Kings finally made a splash on the NHL's trade deadline day, acquiring left wing Dustin Penner -- a former Anaheim Duck — from Edmonton for minor-league defenseman Colten Teubert, a first-round pick in the June entry draft and a third-round pick in 2012. If the Kings win the Stanley Cup this year, Edmonton would instead get a second-round pick that year.

The Kings were told Sunday that Dallas center Brad Richards would not be available to them. Unlike last summer, when they could not sign Ilya Kovalchuk and had no backup plan, they came up with a viable alternative. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

Oilers send Penner to West Coast in slow deadline day

Deals still could be announced, but there's reason to believe this could be the slowest NHL trade deadline day in more than 20 years.

As of the 3 p.m. ET cutoff, only seven deals had been made on what is perennially the busiest swap meet of the year.

The biggest deal?

Hand it to a Canadian team for making the splash.

The clock was ticking down on the Edmonton Oilers - long rumoured to be among the most active organizations - and with just about 30 minutes before the deadline, the Oilers sent winger Dustin Penner to Los Angeles. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

Kings Aqcuire Dustin Penner

The Los Angeles Kings have made a move at the deadline. It’s not the first time, but hopefully it’ll be the first time in a while that a deadline move made a real impact on the team. The Kings finally made a move that required them to move some real assets in order to get an asset back. So who did they get? The Kings acquired Dustin Penner, formerly of the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers, for Colten Teubert, a 1st round pick this season and a conditional pick next season.

Dustin Penner is more than just a rental, since he is under contract at $4.25 million for next season, and with any luck the Kings will be able to sign him long-term. We gave a brief look at Dustin Penner in our overview of who the Kings might be targeting, and highlighted him as arguably the best fit of the available forwards. As a result, I can say that we here at Rink Royalty are overall quite pleased with the deal. The Kings acquire an offensive, powerful forward who can play on the left wing, and contribute to the first line. Penner has scored 30 goals in the past, and will likely be able to increase that number when he’s playing on a team that isn’t as awful as the Oilers. He’s got a Stanley Cup ring, and is still young enough to be a part of the Kings core moving forward. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

Buzz: Kings Acquire Dustin Penner (Updates)

Bob McKenzie and Gord Miller say that Dustin Penner has been traded to the Los Angeles Kings for a first round pick, Colten Teubert and a third round pick that can become a second round pick.

Teubert was a first round pick in 2008.

…I wonder if this was their pitch for Brad Richards, got okay with moving those pieces and just went out and got Penner since it doesn’t seem like Richards will get moved. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

On NHL trade deadline day, defense remains in demand

As NHL teams continue their frenzied pursuit of defensemen in the trade market, the Chicago Blackhawks decided to commit $29 million to keep one of theirs.

Starting next season, Brent Seabrook will earn $5 million a season for five seasons. He also will receive a $2 million signing bonus next season and another $2 million bonus the following season. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

Russo: Wild Interested in Dustin Penner

Michael "Sources Close to the Situation" Russo had this in his notebook this morning:
According to sources, Fletcher has talked to Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini about power forward Dustin Penner, a four-time 20-goal scorer. He's got a year left at $4.25 million, and for the Wild, which is $950,000 from the salary-cap ceiling, to make any trade for a player of that price, it would have to give up salary in a deal.

So far, Fletcher seems hesitant to trade any significant players from his lineup because of the risk of fouling up chemistry. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )
Trades: Penner joins Kings; Capitals add Arnott, Wideman

The USA TODAY hockey desk will be providing trade updates and instant analysis leading up to and beyond the 3 p.m. ET NHL trade deadline. Kevin Allen's Twitter feed is on the left:

3:20 p.m.: Arnott to Capitals

The Washington Capitals perhaps became the big winner on the trade deadline day when they acquired big, tough physical center Jason Arnott to play on their second line. Earlier in the day, Capitals picked up puck-moving defenseman Dennis Wideman. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

Oilers trade Penner to Kings

The Edmonton Oilers traded Dustin Penner to the Los Angeles Kings for prospect Colten Teubert, a first round pick and a conditional pick.

Penner has 21 goals and 18 assists in 62 games this season, his fourth with Edmonton since the Oilers acquired him from Anahiem via a contract offer sheet in 2007. He has one year remaining on his existing contract, with a cap hit of $4.25 million US.

Penner came to the Oilers in 2007 — accepting an offer as a restricted free agent that Anaheim Ducks didn't match — and he has often been the target of the fans displeasure, especially after signing a five-year contract worth $21.25-million US. ( Read Dustin Penner more... )

Oilers ship Penner to Kings for prospect, picks

Dustin Penner's love-hate relationship with Edmonton hockey fans came to an end Monday when the hulking forward was traded by the Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings for defenceman Colten Teubert and two draft picks, including a first-rounder this year.
