Sally Meyerhoff tragedy reminds runners to take precautions

Sally Meyerhoff, a professional marathoner who recently won the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon in January, was killed yesterday in a cycling accident. According to reports, Meyerhoff "who was 27 and lived in Maricopa, Ariz., failed to yield at a stop sign and was struck by a pickup truck. Reports say she was killed instantly."

Meyerhoff's tragic death is a reminder to local runners to practice safety measures while running -- or cross training -- outdoors this spring. With the heavy snow that the Albany area has experienced this winter, road conditions, especially shoulders, can be slippery, wet, icy or snow covered. Moreover, even with the recent snow melt there are still many areas where plows have deposited snow and created large snow banks. These snow banks can make it difficult for drivers to see runners.

Take these precautions when running outdoors to help avoid accidents:

* Stop more frequently. If you normally just slow down at road crossings, take an extra moment to stop and be extra sure that there are no oncoming cars. Pause and look around you more frequently than you normally do.
* Run during daylight hours. If you must run in the dark, make sure you are illuminated and choose a familiar route.
* Run without music. When outdoor conditions are less than ideal, you need to be aware of your surroundings and ensure that you can hear oncoming traffic. Leave the headphones at home!
* Run against traffic. By running against traffic you will be able to see and observe cars as they approach.
* Run in parks or on local trails. While you can't beat the convenience of stepping outside your door and heading down the street for a run, when conditions warrant it, head to less trafficked areas like parks and trails. Head to places such as The Crossings, the Corning Preserve, Thacher Park or bike trail that runs from Schenectady to Albany to avoid running in traffic.

The transition period between winter and spring in the Albany area can be a great time to run. Practice common sense precautions to ensure your safety.

Michael Woodmansee : Father Declares He Kill Him for Murder of His 5-Year-Old Son

It is not hard to imagine where John Foreman is coming from. He wants, vengeance, he wants revenge and he wants a closure – albeit in an extreme way – for the murder of his son. He wants to see his son’s killer Michael Woodmansee dead, and he is saying he will kill him if he released from prison.

Back in 1975, the 16-year-old Michael Woodmansee took the life of John Foreman’s five-year-old son Jason. Jason Foreman was considered “missing” until 1982 when Woodmansee attempted to snatch another young boy. The boy escaped and the police began to question Woodmansee and was found to be responsible for Jason Foreman disappearance and death.

Woodmansee was given a 40-year sentence, but now Woodmansee will be released twelve years earlier than previously planned. News that very much upset the Foreman family. Foreman says if Woodmansee is let out of prison that he will kill him “as aggressively and as painfully” as he killed his son. Saying, point blank, that “I do intend, if this man is released anywhere in my vicinity, or if I can find him after the fact, I do intend to kill this man,” Foreman said in a radio interview.

It is a classic tale of the ‘poor little rich kid.’ Andrew Luster was born to riches, and was heir to a massive fortune. But the great grandson of cosmetic titan Max Factor threw it all away, thanks to his horrible crimes.

He grew up in Malibu and reportedly had a trust fund of over three million dollars that supported his traveling, trips and his passion for surfing. He had everything, except morals. In 1996, 1997 and 2000 he reportedly drugged three different women with the date rape drug GHB, he that – while they were unconscious – raped them. He was caught and while on trial he escaped and left the country. He was a fugitive. The trial went on – in absentia – and he was found guilty of a stunning 86 or the 87 counts against him.

He settled in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where he was living it up and hitting the waves. But while the TV cameras were rolling, Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman – the reality show bounty hunter caught him.

Where is he now?

He is serving a 124-year prison sentence at the Mule Creek State Prison in California. He won’t be eligible for parole until he serves 85% of his sentence, which would make it 2108. This means he will be spending the rest of his life in prison.

His victims? Two of them won civil suites and were awarded $39 million, but the money is still being determined to how much they’ll actually get. And there are two other – much younger victims – his two children with his ex-girlfriend who are now seven and nine.

There was a made for TV movie made of his tale called, ” A Date With Darkness: The Trial and Capture of Andrew Luster,” showing all the tragedy.

Washington, DC - Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) today laid out necessary actions to help prevent senior abuse, including facilitating greater collaboration and training for law enforcement officers and conducting criminal background checks on potential caretakers. Blumenthal made the case for these important steps during a hearing on elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation conducted by the Senate Special Committee on Aging. However, the GAO concluded that this number vastly underestimates the actual rate of senior abuse. The niece of Phyllis Macay, a woman who was one of four Americans killed of the coast of Somalia by pirates, spoke lovingly about her aunt.

“My aunt was a very smart and avid sailor,” said Nina Crossland, from the family’s South San Francisco residence. Crossland is the family’s spokesperson and Macay’s niece. “She was living her dream sailing around the world. We want the media to know that she was vivacious … and she lit up the room when she walked in.”

Karen Sypher sentenced to 7 years for extorting Rick Pitino

LOUISVILLE — Calling her crime "brazen," a federal judge sentenced Karen Cunagin Sypher Friday to seven years and three months in prison for trying to extort cash, cars and other payments from University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino.

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson III also ordered Sypher, 50, to serve two years of supervised release. He told Sypher to have no contact with Pitino or his family during her release.

Simpson called Sypher's crime a "serious offense."

A University of Alabama fan stands accused of poisoning -- yes, poisoning -- 130-year-old trees at Toomer's Corner, a famous intersection where the Auburn University campus meets the town.

A man was arrested in connection with the stunt, which first came to the public's attention after someone called into a sports radio show and claimed that he had poisoned the trees because of a long-standing Auburn-Alabama grudge. AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn University says someone deliberately poisoned trees at Toomer's Corner, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.

Harvey Almorn Updyke is quickly becoming the Southern United States’ most hated man. According to his Facebook page, he’s also retired Texas State Trooper.

Updyke, a 62-year-old Alabama fan who was arrested for poisoning Auburn University’s iconic oak trees, lists “Retired Texas State Trooper,” under his “Has worked at” section. He also lists Milton High as his high school, and says he lives in Mobile, Alabama.
