Tango app dancing to a happy tune

That was fast. The Tango video chatting app for the iPhone has topped one million downloads in the ten days since it launched in the iTunes store.

The free app allows phone-to-phone video chat, but unlike the Apple FaceTime app, Tango doesn't require WiFi. It works just fine over 3G networks, and also unlike FaceTime, it allows chatting with people on many models of Android phones too.

The company reports 40% of the downloads of the app are from the U.S., but users in 125 countries have grabbed Tango.

It's a great mystery to me exactly how this app was approved, as Apple doesn't seem to want to enable 3G video chats with FaceTime. Perhaps it's competitive pressure, but then I would think Apple would allow FaceTime to work the same way. Maybe Apple feels that not many people will download the app, but it seems to be getting grabbed at a very rapid rate.

Tango supports the iPhone 3GS and 4G, and Android phones including Motorola Droid and Droid X; HTC EVO, Desire, and Incredible; Samsung GalaxyS; and Google Nexus One. Tango works with carrier phone and data plans, and on Wi-Fi networks.

Yahoo! Mesenger app updated, offers free voice and video calling

The Yahoo! Messenger app has received a pretty significant upgrade today -- the app now lets you make video and voice calls to Yahoo! Messenger friends. That has a few interesting outcomes, the first of which is that you can now make video calls from any iPhone running iOS 4.1 to anywhere with a Yahoo! Messenger account, including back to PCs running the client there. We haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but the app is a free download, so you can see for yourself if you want. You can also make free voice calls between friends, or for an extra fee, call out to phones around the world.

One caveat: the calls don't seem to work on the iPod touch 4G, according to reviewers on the App Store. We're not sure why that would be, but the app description clearly states that service is only for iPhone 3GS/4. Otherwise, here's one more solution to voice and even video chatting over 3G on your iPhone.

Apple Remote App v2 now available for iOS 4

Apple has released an all-new version of its long-untouched Remote app for iOS devices, which has been well overdue an update for some time now. It has a number of significant new features, including Retina Display support, an all-new iPad UI, gesture-based remote control support for the new Apple TV, and (perhaps most significantly for some people) the ability to use Home Streaming to stream content from an iTunes library on your local network to your iOS device. This last addition will be really useful for people with music libraries that are too large to fit on their device.

Numerous commenters are pointing out that the Home Sharing feature does not allow you to stream from iTunes to the iOS device, although that would sound like a logical thing for it to do. Instead, it merely allows an easier way to "pair" your iOS device and iTunes without entering the four-digit codes required by the previous version. The overly enthusiastic writer of the original story conveyed his deep regret about this error as he was taken out and shot.
