Kate Gosselin Emmys 2010: Reality TV mom is hoping to land an acting career and man in Hollywood Read

Tuesday 31 August 2010

Kate Gosselin

Kate Gosselin happily posed for photographers while on the red carpet at the Emmys on Aug. 29.

Out of all the people who walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards Sunday night, one person in particular stood out in the crowd.

Kate GosselinPosing among Emmy-nominated actors and actresses such as Jon Hamm and Edie Falco, reality TV star Kate Gosselin reportedly felt right at home at the star-studded event.

Gosselin, 35, who took part in host Jimmy Fallon's opening song-and-dance number, saw her invitation to the Emmys as the "perfect place" to network with casting directors and producers, according to PopEater.com.

"Kate has made her mind up that she's going to be an actress and hopes her new profession will result in her finding a new man," a Gosselin pal told the gossip website.

No folks, this is apparently not a joke.

Having enjoyed her time as a reality star – thanks to runs on TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" and ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" – the single mother of eight reportedly wants to shift gears and focus on scripted TV work.

"The show she would really like to be cast in is 'Mad Men" the source said in all seriousness.

And like many of today's Hollywood couples who fell in love on set, Gosselin is reportedly hoping her new break in show business will land her a new man.

"Kate looks at the happiness of couples who met on sets together – Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer and Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks come to mind – and believes that's how she is going to find love again," the insider said. "She has it all planned out and won't take no for an answer."

Mad Men's January Jones hits sour note with Emmy dress

January JonesThe morning after chatter following a major television award show usually has the fashion police picking a winner, and more importantly, a loser.

This year's victim seems to be January Jones, the hot starlet who plays the wife of Don Drapper on ''Mad Men,'' which won the best drama category at the 2010 Emmys on Sunday night.

Jones wore an ocean blue, strapless Atelier Versace dress, the texture of which appeared to be scales and pointy cones for a breast, along with a trail. The dress quickly caught the evil eye of fashionistas on the red carpet before the awards show began at 8 p.m. on NBC.

As she did interviews on the arm of her boyfriend, ``Saturday Night Live'' cast member Jason Sudeikis, the bash-the-dress talk began. It continued in the morning shows on Monday.

''Didn't someone tell her that Madonna did that look years ago?'' one critic sniped.

''Her hair is too messy for an award show,'' said another.

Jones also lost in the best actress in a drama category to Kyra Sedgwick of ''The Closer.''

Jimmy Fallon's Emmy Opening Number Celebrates 'Glee' With Star-Studded Rendition of 'Born to Run' [VIDEO]

Ever wanted to see 'Mad Men' star Jon Hamm back his thang up into TV legend Betty White? Well, you can thank Jimmy Fallon for making it happen in the 'Glee'-themed skit, song, and dance served as the Emmys' opening number.

Hamm, White and a myriad of other TV stars joined Fallon and the 'Glee' cast as they performed an all-star rendition of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run' to raise money for Emmy tickets.

Jimmy FallonAs Fallon and the Gleeks ran through a backstage area looking to recruit members for a regional glee club competition with a cash prize, they ran into '30 Rock''s Tina Fey, (dressed as Jane LynchSue Sylvester), 'Lost' star Jorge Garcia, 'The Vampire Diaries' star Nina Dobrev, 'Community' star Joel McHale and Hamm, who was practicing some sweet dance moves with his coach, Betty White. (Is there anything that woman can't do?) Unfortunately, White didn't make the cut -- and neither did Kate Gosselin, who gamely poked fun at her stiff 'Dancing With the Stars' performance.

Fallon and his makeshift crew broke out into a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run' and, after donning matching outfits (and Bruce's iconic blue jeans and t-shirt for Fallon), eventually made it to the Nokia Theater stage to finish their song live, with former Journey guitarist-turned-'American Idol' host Randy Jackson joining them onstage.

If his dancing skills didn't win you over, there's one more reason to swoon over Hamm: He does a mean Bruce Springsteen impression.

Did you like Jimmy's 'Glee'-themed Emmy opener? Did we miss any of the famous folks who participated?

'Dancing with the Stars' season 11 cast

Dancing with the Stars, David Hasselhoff, Mike Sorrentino, The Situation

OK, so the official list isn't out yet (it will be annnounced during 'The Bachlor Pad' on Aug. 30 on ABC), but denizens of two-stepping muck-raking journalists have been worked off their feet trying to find out who has been cast for the 11th season of 'Dancing with the Stars.' From The Hoff to The Situation (above), find out who is set to compete on the dance floor this year...

David Hasselhoff, Dancing with the Stars

He may prefer to be lying down eating hamburgers off the floor, but David Hasselhoff has taken one for the team and reportedly signed on to 'Dancing with the Stars' this season. But where the 'Baywatch' alum may have been tops in the ab department as Mitch Buchanan, he has some stiff competition on the dance floor...

Mike Sorrentino, The Situation, Dancing with the Stars

...Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino, everyone's favorite muscle-bound 'Jersey Shore' cast member, is said to have signed on to the cast as well. OK, so he may be known primarily for fist-pumping, but that doesn't mean he can't put that six-pack to good use in the studio.

Dancing with the Stars, Sarah Palin

Her mom must be so proud! Sarah Palin's 19-year-old daughter and teen mom Bristol has reportedly joined the cast of 'Dancing with the Stars.' Hers is becoming the go-to family for unscripted series as both her mother and her baby daddy, Levi Johnston, also have reality series in the works.

Dancing with the Stars, Dirty Dancing, Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze, Dancing with the Stars

Does Baby still have it in her? 'Dirty Dancing' alum Jennifer Grey should probably be barred from joining the cast of 'Dancing with the Stars' considering she has had experience dancing with one of the most elegant movers in Hollywood (cf. Patrick Swayze). But, then, Grey is not exactly the person she used to be. Along with her maligned new nose, may come some steps that are equally derided.

Dancing with the Stars, Dance with Me, Michael Bolton

In 2002, he sang 'Dance with Me,' and now Michael Bolton really means it! Nicolette Sheridan's former paramour has reportedly signed on to the 11th season of 'Dancing with the Stars.' While last year's Nichole Scherzinger may have proved that girl group members have an unfair advantage, something tells us Bolton won't have the same leg-up.

Dancing with the Stars, Brandy

R&B singer Brandy has been laying low since that brutal car accident back in 2006, which left one woman dead. But two years ago she returned with the album 'Human' and it looks like the sometimes-actress could be slowly making her way back onto the big screen, starting with a spot on 'Dancing.'

Dancing with the Stars, Chad Ochocinco

Chad Ochocinco gave it his all on 'Dancing with the Stars' last season, which might be what inspired producers to seek out another football player, Arizona Cardinals' Kurt Warner, to join this season's cast. Let's hope that number on his jersey doesn't jinx his chances.

Dancing with the Stars, Florence Henderson

Oh, mom! The quintessential TV mom, Florence Henderson, may be taking Buzz Aldrin's spot as the more mature member of this year's 'Dancing' cast. The ex-'Brady Bunch' star, who played Carol Brady on the 70s show, is reportedly strapping on some dancing shoes for the series' 11th season.

Dancing with the Stars, Rick Fox

Blame Canada if Rick Fox turns out to be a terrible dancer. The retired pro basketball player and Canuck small screen star is reportedly rounding out the 'Dancing' cast this season. No stranger to competition shows, Fox has also appeared on 'Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?'

Dancing with the Stars, Margaret Cho

Rumored contestant Margaret Cho is known more for her shocking tongue than saucy dance moves. But if her stand-up routine is anything to go by, she will slay on 'Dancing with the Stars' this season.

Dancing with the Stars, Kirstie Alley

Kirstie Alley was an early front-runner in the 'Dancing with the Stars' casting rumor mill. But it turns out the 'Fat Actress' may not be joining the group after all. We will know for sure when the official cast is announced during 'The Bachelor Pad' on Aug. 30 on ABC.

BBTBrother 12, Enzo recognizes that how embarrassing it is that he did not win anything. Well, fortunately, the others can hold their own. Enzo now worries. They decide to bring Britney down in the team.

However, Enzo made significant strides in the mvoe forward brigade game. The team now need to thank as they have made to the final four. Though he palyed a bad game, but it is okay. It was season’s ridiculous result after Lane opens a Pandora’s box. There is a chance for him of winning $10,000, but sad to say, he won only $91.17. For this penalty was given to the entire house.

Karissa Shannon Admits There Is Sex Tape of Her and Heidi Montag [ VIDEO ]

Monday 30 August 2010

Heidi MontagHeidi Montag's partner in girl-on-girl sex tape, Playboy Playmate Karissa Shannon, has confirmed that she and the "The Hills" star once filmed such explicit video.

While promoting her new signature milkshake at Millions of Milkshakes in West Hollywood on Thursday, August 26, Karissa told Radar Online, "There is a sex tape of me and Heidi."

"It's just me and Heidi, that's it," Karissa later stressed that Heidi's estranged husband Spencer Pratt was not involved in the filming of footage. The blonde, who at that time was accompanied by boyfriend Sam Jones III, went on saying that Spencer didn't know about the tape and claiming he has stolen her video camera containing the footage.

"Me and Heidi were hanging out at her house in Malibu and he came over to pick up some stuff and he 'accidentally' took my camera," Karissa said. "I talk to Heidi every single day and I tried to be there for her when she was going through her divorce, but now it's starting to affect my life."

"Spencer had no right to steal my camera. There are other things on there that I don't want to come out, including the video of me and Heidi," Karissa continued, before adding that she doesn't "want people to see it."

Now that the sex tape might soon become a public consumption, Karissa mused, "I don't know, I just wish I'd done it [the sex tape] with Lindsay Lohan. At least it wouldn't be on the market right now!"

Review: Mafia 2 Games (Xbox 360/ PS3/ PC)

Mafia 2

BADA bring it on! There's a hit out - and it's in the form of Mafia II.

Following on from its 2 million-selling little brother, 2K Czech have taken this latest version to new levels.

So, how is the world of organised crime looking since we last left it?

Mafia 2 Well, you play Vito, the son of a poor immigrant who realises that joining the Mafia is the only way to get out of poverty.

In his quest to become a made man, Vito embarks on a journey of boosting cars, breaking legs and shootouts with Tommy guns.

One noticeable difference in Mafia II is that the storyline and set pieces are a lot darker than before.

The car chases are brilliantly done and the hand-to-hand combat is remarkably improved (something we were disappointed with in the first game). The soundtrack is quirky and the rendering really brings out the grim atmosphere of the Mafia world.

Although the Empire Bay map is a big one (10-square miles) you can't help but feel that the open world could have been expanded more. Red Dead Redemption set the bar stupidly high in this field but we were still hoping that Mafia II would try and stretch itself a little more.

But, that's a harsh criticism of what is a truly sensational game.

You wannabe a wise guy? Well, there's no wiser move than going out and buying this game. 9/10

Does homeopathy work?

HomeopathyHomeopathy is a system of medicine devised by a German doctor in the late 18th century. Samuel Hahnemann became disenchanted with existing medical practices of his time and decided to investigate new techniques. So, he began to carry out experiments on himself and other healthy volunteers until he came up with the “like cures like” theory. According to Hahnemann’s findings, an illness can be treated with a tiny fraction of the same substance that caused it in the first place.

In order to ensure treatment was safe, the potentially harmful substance was heavily diluted with water and alcohol. This process then became a core principle of homeopathy, stating that the more diluted the substance, the greater its healing power. Homeopaths believe that shaking the vessel during the dilution process helps to “imprint the healing energy of the medicinal substance throughout the body of water”, the NHS cites. In some cases, a substance is diluted 30 times until it is thought to be at its maximum strength. This process is called succession.

But is it true?

HomeopathyThere is a lot of controversy surrounding the theory. Some critics say there is no difference between taking a homeopathic pill and a placebo, as the substance is often so diluted none of its molecules are left. The concept of a substance being able to leave an imprint on water is also disputed, as there is no concrete proof that this is possible. Supporters of homeopathy, however, argue that sub-atomic particles in the substance can become entangled with sub-atomic particles in water, thus leaving an imprint, or ‘memory’.

According to the NHS, there is no clinical proof for homeopathy either and trials have consistently suggested that it is no more effective than a placebo. Again, this is disputed by supporters, who claim that the way clinical trials are conducted goes against homeopathic theory. Their belief is that each patient needs to be assessed individually, with medicine administered carefully on a case by case basis, not just selected at random. Before even beginning to discuss the health issue at hand, a homeopathic practitioner will ask for a complete account of the patient’s lifestyle, including diet, personality and sleeping habits, in order to help them determine precisely which treatment will be most effective.

Even so, the British Homeopathic Association claims that 44% of controlled randomised trials in homeopathy have reported positive effects.

Should I consider homeopathy to treat my illness?

Although there is arguably little scientific proof for homeopathic theory, many patients swear by it. In fact, the practice is an approved type of complementary an alternative medicine (CAM) in the UK, and you can even get free treatment from the National Health Service.

Some homeopaths claim that they are able to treat even the most serious of illnesses without the help of traditional medicine. However, most health professionals agree that the CAM should be used to complement normal treatment in severe cases, rather than replace it. This is especially applicable to conditions such as HIV, cancer, diabetic coma, malaria and heart attacks.

Satoshi Kon, visionary anime filmmaker, dies at 46‎

Satoshi Kon, one of the true visionaries of Japanese animation, died on Aug. 24 of pancreatic cancer at 46. Kon’s first film, 1999′s psychological thriller Perfect Blue, established what became a hallmark of his all-too-short career, and helped earn him a dedicated cult following in the U.S.: Mature, grounded storytelling spiced with a distinctive and substantial magical surrealism. His 2002 follow-up, Millennium Actress, blurred the lines between an enigmatic Japanese movie star’s real life and film career; it won Kon two Annie award nominations for directing and writing, and further established him as a filmmaker eager to use animation to tell stories aimed thoroughly at adult audiences.

Tokyo Godfathers, released stateside in 2004, edged more towards direct sentiment with its story following three homeless people — an alcoholic, a drag queen, and an 11-year-old girl — after they come upon an abandoned infant on Christmas Eve. But it was Kon’s 2006 Paprika, a dazzlingly dark fantasia bursting with visual invention, that truly solidified its maker’s reputation as a giant of anime. In fact, thanks to the film’s mind-melting imagery and dream-sharing narrative, many have noted striking similarities between Paprika and this year’s blockbuster Inception — check out a mash-up trailer of the two films, as well as Paprika‘s original trailer, after the jump.

Kon died working on a new film tentatively titled The Dream Machine, which he called in a 2008 interview “like a ‘road movie’ for robots.” Hopefully, the project was far enough along that we will be able to see the finished film, if only so audiences can experience Kon’s singular vision one last time.

What will you most remember about Satoshi Kon’s films?

Singapore counts winnings as casinos boost tourism

Singapore CasinoSINGAPORE (AFP) - Singapore's massive bet on two casino resorts is already paying off after the number of arrivals in a single month crossed the one million mark for the first time in July, analysts said.

Six months after opening its first casino in February, followed by the second in April, Singapore is already counting its winnings despite lingering concern about gambling-linked social problems among the local population.

"Let there be no mistake about it, the legalisation of casino gaming in Singapore was always intended to be a part of an enhanced tourism strategy for the country," said Jonathan Galaviz, a Las Vegas-based expert on Asian gaming.

"The development of multi-billion dollar integrated resorts in Singapore is clearly paying off for the country, and they will continue to do so for at least the next decade," said the managing director of Galaviz & Company.

DBS Group, Southeast Asia's biggest bank, said the casino resorts are expected to contribute about 1.5 billion US dollars to the economy this year.

Church and civic groups had opposed the legalisation of casinos but the government went ahead in 2005 and allowed US-based Las Vegas Sands and Malaysia's Genting group to build two complexes at a combined cost of 10 billion dollars.

As a safeguard, the casinos were told to charge an entry fee equivalent to 74 dollars from Singaporean citizens and permanent residents, and a campaign against "problem gambling" was launched by the government.

Singapore's tourism board said the city-state, which has a population of just five million, welcomed one million visitors in July, thanks in large part to the pull of its new man-made tourist attractions.
Tourism officials hope to see between 11.5 million and 12.5 million visitors this year -- a figure well above the numbers visiting neighbouring countries blessed with white-sand beaches, towering mountains and other natural wonders.

As well as the casinos, Singapore's euphemistically named "integrated resorts" also offer theme parks, high-end shopping, hotels and convention halls.

Analysts say Singapore understood the importance of casinos in a broader context -- not just as a means to lure the high-rollers but as part of a strategy to stay competitive as a travel destination and a "global city".

Founding father Lee Kuan Yew said the government had been "against casinos for decades" and "refused offers of seedy casinos from Macau."

But officials changed their position after seeing how the casino industry developed in Las Vegas, which offers Broadway hits and fine-dining restaurants featuring some of the world's famous chefs.

The 4.4 billion dollar Resorts World Sentosa, built by Malaysia's Genting Group, opened in February. It boasts Southeast Asia's only Universal Studios theme park, among other attractions.

The 5.5 billion dollar Marina Bay Sands, owned by Las Vegas Sands, started operations in April.

Its iconic building, consisting of a boat-shaped "skypark" perched atop three 55-story hotel towers, is the newest jewel on the city's glittering skyline.

Revenue figures from the two Singapore casinos paint an upbeat picture.

Resorts World Sentosa said it generated revenues of 636.5 million dollars in the three months to June. Net profit came in at almost 300 million dollars for the quarter.

The Universal Studios theme park has attracted about 8,000 visitors a day and hotel occupancy rates are an estimated 70 percent.

Marina Bay Sands declared net revenues of 216 million dollars in just its first 65 days of operation, with the casino accounting for 191 million dollars.

Las Vegas Sands chief executive Sheldon Adelson said he was "gratified by the overwhelming reception the property has received".

Galaviz, the gaming consultant, said Singapore's total gross gaming revenue should reach 2.7 billion dollars this year, rising to 3.0 billion dollars in 2011.

But he said this is unlikely to reach the levels in Las Vegas and Macau "if Singapore's market just remains at two casinos at their current size".

Macau took in 14.5 billion dollars from gamblers in 2009, while casinos at the Las Vegas strip earned about 5.5 billion dollars.

Hong Kong-based brokerage and investment group CLSA was more upbeat on the Singapore casino market.

Aaron Fischer, head of Asia consumer gaming at CLSA, estimates Singapore gaming revenues will rise to 5.1 billion dollars in 2011 and 6.5 billion dollars in 2012 from 3.0 billion dollars this year.

I came to Juve to win, says Quagliarella

Fabio QuagliarellaROME — Italy striker Fabio Quagliarella revealed that the desire to win the title and play in the Champions League were behind his move from Napoli to Juventus.

The 27-year-old made a loan switch on Friday worth 4.5 million euros for the season to Napoli with the option of a permanent deal for a further 10.5 million euros at the end of the year.

Quagliarella, who scored a brace in Italy's World Cup 3-2 defeat against Slovakia in South Africa, had only been at Napoli for a year since leaving Udinese.

He actually began his career at Juve's neighbours Torino but said that it is Juve's ambition which made the difference for him.
"At Napoli the objective was to improve on last season whereas Juventus are looking to win the title and get into the Champions League," he said.

"Here it's a step forward. Inter Milan are always the team to beat but we must give it a go."

"We're a young team so we'll need to gel quickly and we'll try to trip everyone up."

Napoli actually finished a place above Juve in sixth last season but while the Turin giants have spent lavishly and added nine new players, including five Italy internationals, Napoli have been very quiet in the transfer market.

But as well as ambition, Quagliarella suggested he had problems with the management in Naples.

"I felt great with the fans and my team-mates," he added. "But when you don't trigger a mechanism, there's a certain feeling with others."

Juventus begin their season with a trip to Bari, where they lost 3-1 last season during a mid-season collapse in which they lost five out of six games.

However, new boss Luigi Delneri is more interested in the future and reshaping Juve into a team that befitts their glorious past rather than the rabble that slumped to their worst ever season in Serie A last year.

"Inter are still the team to beat but we're not thinking about the gap between us and the nerazzurri," he said.

"Our aim is to once again perform like Juve."

First off they must overcome a determined and energetic Bari side but Delneri insists his team will match their hosts for effort.

"We have quality and intensity, we also run like Bari but our quality will count as well," he said.

Bari boss Giampiero Ventura promised that his team will give a 60,000 full house something to cheer on Sunday.

"Tomorrow we'll offer the public at the San Nicola stadium a show and many goal-scoring chances," he said.

"The hope is that this group continue to express themselves like they did last season while avoiding the virus of resting on one's laurels, which comes from receiving too many plaudits in the past and having exceeded expectations last season."

Ventura is expecting this to be a tough test, regardless of Juve being short of forward Amauri, who is out for almost a month with a thigh problem.

"It's a slight advantage for us but Quagliarella is like a sniper," said Ventura.

"Juventus are still Inter's most credible challengers for the title."

Henan Airlines Plane Crash In China Kills 43 [PHOTO]

Airlines Plane Crash, The Henan Airlines

The Henan Airlines flight took off from Heilongjiang’s capital of Harbin a little before 9 pm and crashed in Yichun just over an hour later.
A Henan Airlines jet with 91 passengers and 5 crew personnel aboard broke apart then burst into flames when it crashed in a grassy area near the Lindu airport on the outskirts of Yichun in China.

State officials said 43 people died and 53 were injured in the crash in the country’s northeast. The runway was blanketed in fog when the plane tried to land.

The Henan Airlines flight took off from Heilongjiang’s capital of Harbin a little before 9 pm and crashed in Yichun just over an hour later.

A Yichun publicity official said some passengers were thrown from the cabin before the aircraft, a Brazilian made Embraer E-190, crashed to the ground.

There are about 1 million people living in Yichun, located in Heilongjiang province, about 160 kilometers from the Russian border.

An unidentified middle aged man who survived the crash described the scene as the plane tried to land. He said there was a lot of turbulence and several big jolts that caused baggage to be thrown out of compartments.

He said after the plane stopped moving, people panicked and ran to the front, trying to open the emergency exits, but they would not open. The man continued “then the smoke came in…within two or three minutes, or even a minute, we couldn’t breathe.

I knew something bad was going to happen.”

China Central Television showed firefighters dousing the fire on the plane with hoses then later digging through the jet’s wreckage.

Forty-three bodies were found within a few hours of the crash, and 53 injured, most with broken bones, were sent to the hospital. Five of the passengers aboard the plane were children but it is not yet known if they survived.

Survivors of the Philippines Hijacking Return Home

The recent hijacking of a tour bus in Manila, Philippines, that left eight tourists dead is still being investigated, but most of the survivors of the traumatic ordeal have returned home, The Associated Press reports.

The interior secretary of the country acknowledged that police were unprepared when dealing with the hijacker, who was an ex-policeman who wanted his job back. He opened fire on the bus full with tourists, killing eight people.

Amy Ng survived the massacre, but is now mourning the deaths of her husband Ken Leung, and daughters Doris and Jessie. Her son, Jason, was also on the trip and was wounded in the head.
"I thought I would fight for survival so I could take care of my children, but two of them have already died," she told the news source.

Authorities have been heavily criticized for their actions during the situation, with the police chief taking a leave of absence while four other officials have been relieved of their duties while the investigation is ongoing.

A traumatic event like a hostage situation may leave survivors suffering from psychological issues like anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) categorizes PTSD as an anxiety disorder that people may develop after witnessing or surviving a traumatic event.

Those suffering from PTSD may experience symptoms that include flashbacks of the event, bad dreams, having difficulty sleeping, becoming depressed or emotionally numb.

The main treatments for the condition are psychotherapy, medication or a combination of both. Mental health professionals will be able to properly diagnose PTSD and help determine the best treatment options.

Dutch judo champion Anton Geesink dies aged 76

By Toby Sterling, Associated Press Writer

AMSTERDAM — Anton Geesink, a member of the International Olympic Committee who won the first Olympic judo gold medal, has died after several weeks in the hospital. He was 76.

The Netherlands' Olympic Committee announced Geesink's death Saturday. He had been in the hospital with an unspecified illness in his hometown of Utrecht, Netherlands.

The International Olympic Committee praised Geesink as a "great athlete" who "dedicated his entire career to the promotion of sport and its values."

Geesink had been a member of the IOC since 1987.
The 6-foot-6 Geesink stunned Japan by becoming the first Westerner to win the world judo championship in 1961 in Paris, then won his Olympic gold in 1964 in Tokyo. He won another world title in Rio de Janeiro in 1965 along with a record 21 European championships.

"Everybody will remember the gigantic stature of this Dutch figure whose size was equivalent to his kindness," the International Judo Federation said in a statement. "Anton Geesink never stopped fighting for the development of sport throughout the world."

Geesink was the first European to become a ninth-dan judoka in 1987, and was awarded the 10th degree in 1997 by the International Judo Federation.

The blue uniform now worn by one competitor in international matches so that judges, referees and spectators can tell the athletes apart more easily arose from a suggestion made by Geesink at an IFJ meeting in 1986.

"Today, Judo is a universal activity, thanks to the 'way of education' that Jigoro Kano created at the end of the 19th century," the IJF statement said. "But for sure, it would not have been possible if, first of all, Anton Geesink had not been the great champion he was and secondly, he had not become such a fantastic ambassador during and after his sports career."

Geesink is survived by his wife, Jans, and their three children.

'Schizophrenia' fears for Matthew Newton

Matthew NewtonUPDATE 12:49pm: TROUBLED actor Matthew Newton is suffering schizophrenia-like symptoms from dangerous use of hard drugs such as ice.

Newton, 33, who is undergoing treatment at Sydney's Northside West Clinic, has been dumped by leading acting agency RGM, which represents Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne and Anthony LaPaglia.

It tops off a week in which Newton was sacked from the TV show The X Factor and dropped by his manager, Titus Day.
Newton is understood to have been taking a cocktail of ice, marijuana and cocaine.

His drug use was known to his family and to some senior employees at the Seven Network, when it hired him.

In a pre-recorded interview with Tracey Grimshaw to air tomorrow night on Nine's A Current Affair, Patti Newton is asked if she has ever been afraid of her son.

"We don't know how to handle it," she admits. "He's always had a bit of a problem with his temper, even as a kid.

"There was a bomb about to go off somewhere, sometime."

Television veteran Bert Newton reveals their son has always suffered from anger and mental issues, but these have been compounded by his use of drugs and alcohol.

"It's been a train wreck," he says of his son's experiences.

Both parents say the most important thing now is that their son "stays alive".

The couple also reveal Newton is on watch at the clinic as there are concerns he is at risk of self-harm.

They say they are heartbroken and hugely concerned about him and are at a loss over how to ensure his long-term health.

Newton's heavy drug use has led to schizophrenia-like symptoms. His latest hospitalisation came after he attacked his former fianc aace Rachael Taylor in the lobby of Rome's five-star Westin Excelsior hotel on August 14.

Taylor and Newton are understood to have been in contact since the incident and have had several email exchanges. She is understood to have emailed Newton after news broke of their violent break-up.

When their legal representatives met on Wednesday, Taylor's lawyer, Christine Nash, was asked not to take out an apprehended domestic violence order against him.

"He wouldn't go near her in 100 years," a source said. "The issue is: is he likely to approach her? The issue is restraining him. Is it necessary to get a court order? He's in a zombie house."

Newton was sedated with tranquillisers and treated by paramedics after he allegedly attacked Taylor in Rome.

Last week, he had an MRI scan at St Vincent's Hospital for ongoing "neurological diagnostic investigations".

Newton's friends detailed the actor's extensive drug use.

"He's schizophrenic from smoking drugs," a source close to Newton told The Sunday Telegraph. "He is what he is."

As Newton's fall from grace continues, other friends have revealed his dependency on marijuana and other drugs.

"He's been like this as long as I've known him," a friend of nearly a decade said.

"I know about his pot use, his coke use and definitely alcohol. His most common use is pot.

"He'd smoke joints - I'd say at least three or four joints minimum a day."

The friend continued, saying Newton was extremely insecure and jealous and that he would "turn" when under the influence of substances.

"He does have a turn in his personality, and it's often triggered by a chemical substance or something he's using. Otherwise, in general he's very charming, very creative, very talented.

"He's just got that typical tortured artist's mind.

"As soon as he puts anything in his body that has anything to do with a chemical base or anything to do with altering his mind, he snaps with aggression."

Another concerned friend labelled Newton an "ice addict" and said his continued use of ice - crystal methamphetamine hydrochloride, a cheap but powerful synthetic stimulant drug - had led to his "heightened" mental issues.

"He's on the ice pipe," the friend said "That's what leads to the high highs and low lows.

"It's a nasty drug, that."

The Seven Network had no problems announcing Newton as the host of The X Factor just a few days after he finished a 28-day treatment course at a Melbourne rehabilitation clinic in May.

Newton had admitted himself to the clinic after a violent incident against Taylor.

But Seven was quick to distance itself from the embattled actor last week, rolling out a new host, Home And Away star Luke Jacobz, for The X Factor's premiere tomorrow night.

Seven, which has dubbed it the "biggest show in the world", paid as much as $22 million to buy the format from the series' creator, Simon Cowell.

The network has been labelled irresponsible for hiring Newton on an estimated $200,000 salary - a large disposable income for someone just out of rehab.

Bert Newton has also suffered from mental illness. In 1964, he suffered a nervous breakdown at the age of 25.

Newton senior revealed in his 1977 autobiography that doctors had injected him with the psychedelic drug LSD, then in common use as a psychiatric treatment, after his breakdown.

Some friends claim Matthew Newton has struggled to cope with life in the spotlight since childhood.

"That's a very heavy element of what he's going through," one friend said. "He's had to deal with a lot, and I think there's a lot people don't know."

Newton's latest troubles have not surprised his inner circle, given his 2006 assault case against former girlfriend Brooke Satchwell.

Newton, who was charged with intimidation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, later pleaded guilty to one count of common assault and was put on a 12-month good-behaviour bond. The conviction was later overturned.

In that case, high-profile friends, including actress Pia Miranda, provided character references.

Another of Newton's former girlfriends, Gracie Otto, daughter of Barry Otto, refused to comment on her relationship with the actor.

"Matt did tend to behave himself a bit more with Gracie because of Barry," a friend said. "He was intimidated by Barry.

"On Friday, cast members of Newton's next film, Face to Face, gathered at a Sydney cineman to view a final cut of the movie, among them fellow actors Vince Colosimo and Luke Ford.

Newton was understandably not present.

"No one said anything within the screening, it just wasn't spoken about," said one filmgoer. "Nothing was mentioned about Matt."
