Alan Greenspan: 'Government Activism' Slowing U.S. Recovery (VIDEO)

( The Huffington Post ) - Less than a year after testifying that his free-market approach to the financial sector was "wrong 30 percent of the time," Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, is taking aim at what he calls "government activism."

Writing in International Finance, Greenspan rails against the "frenetic pace of new financial regulations," which he says have hampered "what should be a broad-based robust economic recovery."

Greenspan directs no ill-will at the Federal Reserve's decisions in the wake of the financial collapse, nor at the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), both of which he believes "were critical in assuaging the freefall."

Other regulatory structures, however, don't get off so easily. The former Federal Reserve chairman casts a skeptical eye toward both the $814 billion federal stimulus and "housing and motor vehicle subsidies," believing that the government's decision to support prices "delays the liquidation required to restore balance to market supply and demand."

Greenspan also calls the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform bill "impossible to judge" at the present moment. Still, he foresees it causing "many unforeseen market disruptions" in the future.

He appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box early Friday morning to further discuss the issue, saying that while the "degree of activism has actually gone down" in the last six months, he predicts the implementation of the "internally contradictory" Dodd-Frank Act will soon surface as a chief economic issue. Here's more from Greenspan:
What we're going to find is the unexpected consequences of much of the new regulations that are going to come as a result of Dodd-Frank are going to be reversed... That is going to create very high degrees of uncertainty.
Greenspan, famous for his dedication to free-market ideology, acted as Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006. In the wake of the 2007 financial collapse, many scrutinized his decision to lower federal interest rates in the mid-2000s. In 2008, he admitted his tendency to avoid regulation might have been "partially wrong."

Schedule MSchedule M: The 2010 Tax Credit Explained [VIDEO]

by Mary Phillips-Sandy

"M" may stand for "money."

Part of the 2009 stimulus package was President Barack Obama's Making Work Pay tax credit, or Schedule M, which adjusted federal withholding tables to increase take-home pay by up to $400 for working individuals and up to $800 for working married couples.

As the New York Times reported last year, this caused confusion for taxpayers, many of whom didn't know they had to complete a brand-new Schedule M IRS form in order to claim the credit on their returns. The situation got even messier for retirees who could claim the Making Work Pay credit, but only after deducting it from other federal tax credits.

Guess what? You may need to deal with Schedule M again for the 2010 tax year.

According to the IRS, the Making Work Pay credit and adjusted withholding tables remained in effect in 2010. The refundable credit was available for self-employed people, and was reduced for higher-income earners, starting at $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples filing jointly.

In order to claim the credit, anyone who files a form 1040 or 1040A needs to complete and file a Schedule M form to calculate how the credit impacted their paychecks and tax liability. (A simplified worksheet is built in to the 1040EZ.)

One more twist, since life with the U.S. tax code is never simple: The 2009 stimulus included a $250 tax cut for retirees, which had to be accounted for via Schedule M. That was a one-time-only deal, so it's not an issue for 2010.

Here's an IRS insider explaining how the Making Work Pay credit, well, works:

Senate Bill 5 Ohio
Ohio Senate passes collective bargaining overhaul bill

The Ohio Senate voted 17-16 Wednesday to pass a bill that has stirred weeks of protests at the Statehouse, drawing more than 15,000 total protesters.

Senate Bill 5 would substantially overhaul a 23-year-old collective bargaining law, which gave public employees the right to bargain for their wages, hours, working conditions and benefits.

Six republicans broke from their party and joined all 10 Senate Democrats in voting against the bill, which will now be sent to the Ohio House of Representatives. Majority leader William G. Batchelder, R-Medina, plans to bring the bill for a vote by March 15, when hearings on Gov. John Kasich's budget proposal are scheduled to begin. ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

Senate Passage of Ohio Senate Bill 5 Draws Criticism From Lawmaker

BELMONT COUNTY -- Ohio State Senator Jason Wilson (D) was quick to react to the advancement of Senate Bill 5.

Wilson has, all along, opposed the measure saying it's aimed at breaking unions.

But Wednesday, the legislation passed by one vote as Wilson joined six other republicans to vote against the measure. Wilson said there were thirteen amendments to the final bill which, he says, is worse than the original. ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

Senate Bill 5 approved by narrow margin

COLUMBUS — By one vote, a bitterly divided Ohio Senate approved a sweeping overhaul of the state’s 27-year-old collective bargaining law Wednesday.

Supporters including Gov. John Kasich praised Senate Bill 5 as a win for governments trying to balance budgets, while opponents said it is the beginning of the end for union protection of public worker pay, hours and safety. ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

Hundreds Protest After Ohio Senate Passes Bill 5

PAINESVILLE, Ohio —
Hundreds of government employees protested in Painesville Wednesday, as the Ohio Senate passed a bill which will ban public workers from striking and restricts collective bargaining.

The bill which passed by a 17-16 vote overhauls the state's 27-year-old collective bargaining law. All 'yes' votes came from the GOP.

Roughly 350,000 teachers, university professors, firefighters, police officers and other public employees fall under the legal realm of the bill.

"It takes away our bargaining rights. We have no recourse if things don't look good for us, everything is in favor of the city," firefighter Jim Ulle, said at the protest. ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

Committee passes Ohio bill to ban worker strikes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A bill to overhaul and greatly restrict collective bargaining rights for public workers in Ohio is headed to a vote before a Republican-led state Senate.

The chamber was expected to take up the measure Wednesday afternoon after the bill passed out of committee on a 7-5 vote. All four Democrats and one Republican voted against it in the Senate labor committee.

The approval came after Senate leadership replaced a GOP state senator who expressed his disapproval of the legislation, securing the necessary support to move the bill forward. ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

8,500 union protesters rally at Ohio Statehouse over Senate Bill 5

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Senate Republicans continued to massage a collective bargaining proposal in a Statehouse committee, introducing 15 amendments to Senate Bill 5, as public union workers again led a spirited daylong rally outside against the proposal.

The changes proposed to the bill today include new procedures for settling workplace disputes with management to replace binding arbitration, caps on employee vacation and sick leave payments, and prohibiting basing layoff orders solely on seniority. ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

Supporters from across Ohio gather for the Rally to Save Ohio's Middle Class

Thousands of supporters from across Ohio gathered in the west lawn of the Statehouse today for the Rally to Save Ohio's Middle Class. The rally was organized to oppose Ohio Senate Bill 5, which would eliminate collective bargaining for state employees, and restrict collective bargaining rights for teachers, police, and firefighters.

Sr. Monica McGloin, a member of the Dominican Sisters of Hope and the Cincinnati Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, pulled no punches in lambasting Governor Kasich "and his Wall Street cronies. They were fueled by corporate greed, and now they want to tell us that we should do with less." ( Read Senate Bill 5 Ohio more... )

Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC), Citigroup (NYSE: C) Penalties Likely to End “No Money Down” Programs

As banks face penalties for abuse mortgage practices and sketchy foreclosure practices, lenders begin looking for larger down payments for borrowers looking to buy houses. Penalties faced by the nations largest banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup are expected to run into billions of dollars as a result of the banks automatically signing foreclosure documents without reviewing them carefully. The result of the steep fines is that the banks will put an end to “no money down” type mortgage programs, and begin requiring larger down payments to qualify for mortgages.

During 1997 through 2006, mortgage lenders created a variety of no money down type programs and “loan to own” mortgages which eliminated the strict requirements previously needed to get a mortgage. Individuals did not have to prove their ability to repay the mortgage or have sizeable downpayments during this period, and lenders like Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup lent millions of mortgages to people they knew had little chance of fully repaying them. Apple's iPad 2: The Price Is Right

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Apple has invited the press to an event on Wednesday that will include the introduction of the iPad 2. What will be the most talked-about feature of this new device?

First, let's stipulate that most of the hardware specifications of the iPad 2 are known, more or less, thanks to endless blogger speculation: one or two cameras, a faster processor, twice the RAM, some tinkering with battery, screen, thickness and bezel. In other words, in the big scheme of things, nothing too exciting. Do you know many people who have held off buying the iPad because it lacks a camera, dual-core CPU or 512 megs of RAM? No, me neither. ( Read Price is Right more... )

Price is right, Canucks weren't

After giving the Canadiens an early lead, Vancouver pressed to comeback but fell just short.

Tom Cruise was in the house Tuesday night and suddenly beating the Montreal Canadiens became as difficult as it was back in the 1970s for the Vancouver Canucks.

In other words, Mission Impossible.

The Canadiens scored two goals 69 seconds apart early in the first period, got stellar goaltending from B.C. native Carey Price and snapped an eightgame losing skid in Vancouver as they hung on for a 3-2 win over the Canucks. ( Read Price is Right more... )

With the date for a carbon price mechanism now set, Fergus Green goes in search of the missing philosophy behind Australian climate policy.

AFTER only four meetings of the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee, and well before most industry groups could finishing dusting off their talking points from the 2009 fear campaign against the ill-fated Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, Labor, the Greens and key independents yesterday announced their agreement on the “broad architecture” for an Australian carbon pricing mechanism.

Australia looks set, finally, to establish that most elusive of prizes in Australian climate politics: a carbon price. ( Read Price is Right more... )

The recent attack on the banks initially encouraged fears that the free checks and free credit card would be the way of the dinosaurs go. This has not happened - yet - but, like a bubble, which, when pressed, pops up elsewhere, the bank found another way to slap customers with high costs - including much more expensive than a monthly or annual fee would have been the first place.

Long ago, I had to blow, to hit a bank fee - before spending the money in your account or payment delays. But now, customers do exactly what they have done over the years and continues to beat strong charges, if you are not listening.

"It is increasingly difficult to cost, if only to sit in one place to avoid," said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com. "It is important to be proactive, not only in monitoring the bank account, and adjustments can be set, but to find better alternatives," he said. ( Read Wachovia Online more... )

'A Lot of Pain': OMB Director on the President's Budget

With President Obama's new budget predicting that this year’s deficit will hit a record $1.6 trillion, OMB Director Jack Lew is admitting that we may never see the budget surpluses he left behind when last serving as budget director under Bill Clinton.

“I wish I could stand here and say that we were on the edge of a surplus. When I left my last day in office I went to Congress and testified and projected $5.6 trillion surplus for the next ten years,” Lew told me. “I came back ten years later to look at projections of over $10 trillion in debt over the next ten years. It’s enough to break your heart. It’s going to take us a lot of hard work just to get to the point where we are not adding to the debt.” ( Read OMB more... )

OMB Director Lew on the New Budget

President Obama will release his budget blueprint for fiscal 2012 next week. If an op-ed penned by his budget director, Jacob Lew, in Sunday’s New York Times is any indication, the administration intends to continue fiddling while the government’s finances burn.

The title of the piece, “The Easy Cuts Are Behind Us,” is a real head-scratcher. Lew’s “easy cuts” are an apparent reference to the $20 billion in savings the president proposed in his previous budgets. Considering that the president proposed total spending of $3.8 trillion last year, $20 billion in gross cuts was an insignificant gesture to say the least. In reality, the Bush administration passed the spending baton to the Obama administration two years ago and it promptly sprinted off like Usain Bolt. ( Read OMB more... )

Discover Card Login

Sunday, 13 February 2011

Discover Card Login, Discover is a corporate card industry credit loans for the most dynamic. While other card issuers are still trying to understand how a high interest rates to their customers can withstand without breaking, Discover is breaking all the rules about what a credit card, what is a company credit card, and this by using your credit card does for you.

Discover has a card for everyone. There are travel rewards cards, cash rewards and even cards that pay you cashback rewards for achieving a balance and make monthly payments on time.

The Discover card is a credit card, issued primarily in the United States. It was introduced by Sears in 1985 and was part of Dean Witter and Morgan Stanley, until 2007, when Discover Financial Services became an independent company. Novus, a large processing center, used to be partners with the company as well. Novus logo has since been removed and now the logo to discover the network has replaced.

Discover Bank Discover issues most maps of the mark. Discover card transactions are processed through the Discover Network payment network. In February 2006, the company announced it would begin offering Discover Debit cards to banks, made possible by the Pulse payment system, which Discover acquired in 2005.

At the time of the Discover Card was introduced; Sears was the largest retailer in the United States. He had purchased the Dean Witter Reynolds Organization (brokerage) and Coldwell, banking & Company (real estate) in 1981 as an attempt to add financial services to its portfolio of customer services. Ray Kennedy, Sr. – father of country singer Ray Kennedy – who was the manager of Sears Credit, designed the card. With the Discover card (and its issuing bank, the Greenwood Trust Company, owned by Sears), it was named Sears Financial Network. Discover Card at the beginning was a small-embossed symbol representing the Sears Tower, headquarters of the company at the time.

Unlike other attempts to create a credit card rival MasterCard and VISA, such as Citibank Choice Card, the Discover Card quickly gained a broad base of domestic consumers. He wore no annual fee, which was rare at the time, and offered a credit limit generally higher than similar cards. Cardholders can obtain a “Cashback Bonus” in which a percentage of the amount spent would be refunded to the account (initially 2%, now as high as 5%), depending on how much the card was used. Retailers [Who?] are courted by copyright trader significantly lower [citation needed] than other credit cards widely accepted. The Discover card is also notable for being the only credit card accepted by the Service U.S. Customs to pay customs duties. [Citation needed]
However, the project of creating one-stop financial services at Sears was not as successful as Sears had hoped, and his promotion of the 2 was designed both to harm sales Sears and limit the potential of the card. Other retailers resisted it because they believed they would help their competitors.
In light of these developments, and fierce competition from both Wal-Mart and category killers known as Toys “R” Us, Sears began to struggle in the late 1980s. Sears sold its financial activities in 1993 and began accepting MasterCard and Visa, in addition to its store credit card and Discover Card. The Discover card has become part of the Dean Witter financial services company. Dean Witter Discover merged with Morgan Stanley in 1997. In 2000, Greenwood Trust has changed its name to Discover Bank.

Discover Card had a sign on top of One Times Square below the flagpole ball falls on New Year’s Eve until the end of 2007. He presented information and new offers for the company and also displayed the countdown during the New Year celebrations
On 24 August 2006, the Discover and PULSE network in the UK LINK ATM network announced a reciprocal agreement allowing the more than 4,500 financial institution participants in the PULSE network to offer their cardholders to all but a handful more than 58,000 ATMs across the UK and allow LINK to offer its 38 participating financial institution members access to more than 265,000 ATMs in the United States PULSE.

In December 2009, an agreement was formalized with the Brazilian credit card processor Redecard to begin accepting Discover Card in Brazil.
Discover Financial Services is an American financial services company, which issues the Discover card and operates the Discover and Pulse Networks. Discover Card is the registered credit card third in the U.S. when measured by cards in force, with nearly 50 million cardholders. [via online sources]
