There is a sector in the microverse of contemporary choreography in which the kids aren’t alright. It’s not that they can’t dance (they can), but rather that they are aggressive and dissociative. Choreographers Juliana F. May and Natalie Green illustrated two aspects of this phenomenon in their recent split bill at Dance Theater Workshop: May’s abstract work demonstrating a nihilistic physicality, and Green’s, while seeming to provide the conventional comfort of narrative, subverting it with dark surreality.

May led off with Gutter Gate, an incomprehensibly named piece whose closest semic approximation may be Dantean (“Abandon All Hope…”). Gutter Gate was performed by Benjamin Asriel, Madeline Best, Anna Carapetyan, Eleanor Smith, and Maggie Thom in the round, the audience on three sides of the stage in immediate, unexpected proximity. Chris Seeds’s excellent, ominous, electronic wave music further heightened the emotional tension.

After initial confrontational and clichéd tai chi-like movements, one of the dancers removed her tights, dancing au naturel from waist down for no discernible reason. No other female dancer followed suit, but Asriel predictably, if naturally, removed his sweats. The mutual exposure brought to mind Imponderabilia, Marina Abramović’s Adam-and-Eve passageway couple. The remaining women spent a substantial amount of time dancing sans shirts in affectless aplomb. The nudity was neither sexual nor sensual, but rather calculatedly cool, unsmiling.

Gutter Gate closed with the women torquing shirtless in dark tights. This, in Chloë Z. Brown’s subtle, modulated lighting, became the most aesthetically beautiful and emotionally moving movement of the performance—the dance literally stripped of extraneous elements, the color combination of black, flesh, and rose an artist’s choice palette. But even this reprieve was undercut by May’s abrupt elimination of any ambient music, which halted any hint of uplift. There came instead a footfall “soundtrack,” resounding ever louder in the silence.

Despite the dancers’ serious intensity and discipline, Gutter Gate came across as callow. If May’s objective is to explore physical emotion through movement, she needs to expand her lexicon: she has anomie down cold.

Natalie Green’s conventionally staged nerves like tombs, nerves like nettles, likewise ineffably named, was likewise inscrutable, albeit in a vastly different way. Danced by Green, Carapetyan, Stacy Grossfield, Miriam Wolf, Brown, Sera-Kim Huenergard, Tei Blow, and Abraham Hawkins, nerves unfolded in a series of narrative-like vignettes. A quad of shorty-white-caped dancers took to the iceberg stage, marching in runway precision. One removed her cape to reveal a shimmering tunic; eventually all four flowed across the stage in sumptuous allegory. At one point, Hawkins, the non-dancing male foil, emerged from the first audience row to remove a dancer; he was later seen in the wings petting a rabbit, which proved, of course, to not be real. Grossfield emerged as the mad main character in this L’Age d’Or cinematic dream-dance. Near its closing, nerves presented a pair of horizontal writhing odalisques in a faux erotic tableau, identically clad under their soon-shed antiseptic capes in sheer noir nighties and choker necklaces from which lipstick-red rabbitsfeet hung. Soon they shared the stage in parallel universes with Grossfield, who ultimately patted the bunny, smiling ever after.

Green’s nerves was a beautiful bedlam of fantasy, distraction, and dreams. The irrational was normal; the gravity-defying dancers leapt, spun, and froze in a floating stagescape. And yet, though the physical and emotional depth was much broader than in Gutter Gate, nerves was nonetheless a tragedy of mental disconnection.

Whether the social and personal breakdowns seen in these two works are fashionable or purely coincidental, they are disturbing in their adherence to flatline themes. Life, after all, has so many more dimensions than those outlined in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Today would be Romanian-born sculptor Constantin Brancusi's 135th birthday, and the Google logo celebrates his most famous works. His contributions to the art world rank up there with Michelangelo, Duchamp, and Giacometti. And if you recognized more than one of the letters, then hats off, art major. I only recognized the Brancusi Kiss.

2011′s Worst Oscar Snubs

While I’m relatively pleased with this year’s Oscar nominations (so glad that great films like The King’s Speech, Inception, The Social Network and Black Swan are getting their due recognition), there are some deserving people who should have been on the list.

It’s really a shame that the Academy chose to ignore Garfield’s outstanding and thoughtful performance. I don’t think Jesse Eisenberg would have been as effective in this movie if he didn’t have Garfield to play off of. Seven-year-old Abstract Expressionist painter Autumn de Forest is taking the art world by storm. The diminutive Los Angeles artist routinely wins art competitions, even when pitted against adult painters.

Autumn normally creates large works, usually in the 4′ x 6′ range. De Forest bypasses the difficulty of painting a canvas larger than herself by placing it on the floor and working from its sides.

Paintings by Autumn de Forest impress the art-loving public as much as art critics. Her imaginative, color-drenched works often fetch high prices at auction, routinely beating out adult artists.

Autumn’s brilliance can be attributed to working from the unconscious, without a trace of the inhibition or self-doubt that can plague adult painters.

The Art Of The Steal: Greatest Art Heists In History Plus Egypt's Hunt For A Van Gogh

Mahmoud Khalil Museum in Egypt has added to their to-do list to fix 'faulty alarms.' This weekend, a Van Gogh painting, entitled "Poppy Flowers" was stolen from the museum. The reports since the theft have been shifty at best - one stating they'd recovered the painting from two men attempting to leave the country and another saying that the search presses on still. Learning about this suddenly nomadic painting inspired some reminiscing over the greatest art thefts in history. Checkout the slideshow below and leave your favorite in the comments. Great works of art should always be respected and put on display with the utmost care, but at (very rare) times it's hard to deny the innovative art of the steal.





'Poppy Flowers' by Vincent Van Gogh. Stolen from Mahmud Khalil Modern Art Museum in Cairo, Egypt on August 21, 2010. According to ArtDaily, faulty alarms in the museum have been initially blamed.
Status: Still missing.




'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo da Vinci. Stolen from the Louvre Museum on August 20, 1911 by Vincenzo Perugia.
Status: Discovered months after Perugia's robbery (he held that the painting should be returned to its rightful home in Italy), it was returned to the Louvre Museum in January 1914 where it still rests.




A landscape by Rembrandt, a Delacroix painting, a work by Gainsborough, jewels, figurines, and other works estimated to be worth $2 million were stolen from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on September 4, 1972. Reports at the time stated that the three masked and armed men knew what they were taking and went immediately for the good stuff.
Status: As yet undiscovered.




Edvard Munch is one of the most oft stolen from painters of all time. In 1994 and 2004, thieves poached his famed 'The Scream' from National Gallery in Oslo, Norway and the Munch Museum, respectively. In 2005, three Munch paintings were stolen from a Norwegian hotel, but were swiftly recovered.
Status: All have been recovered... for now.




'Portrait of the Duke of Wellington' by Francisco Goya was stolen from the National Gallery in London in 1961 by Kempton Bunton - a retired bus driver. The painting had recently been sold to an American businessman for $390,000, so when Bunton stole the work he asked for the same amount in ransom, claiming he intended to purchase TV licenses for the poor.
Status: Returned by Bunton himself in 1965.




The Gardner art heist is one of the most famous thefts of all time. In 1990, three men dressed as Boston police officers broke into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, handcuffed the guards, and took off with 13 pieces of work valued at approximately $500 million that include three Rembrandts, five pieces by Degas, a Vermeer, and a Manet.
Mrs. Gardner stated in her will that the museum (which permanently houses her private collection) should not be significantly altered and as a result, thirteen spaces on her walls remain empty until the pieces return.
Status: An as yet unsolved mystery.
