Facebook experiments with streaming movies

(NBC) - More than a half-billion people use Facebook to keep up with friends and family.

Now, Warner Bros. Pictures wants to find out if those same Facebook users might use the social website to watch Movies.

The company is now offering the film "The Dark Knight" for rental online to Facebook users.

It costs 30 Facebook credits, the equivalent of $3, with Facebook getting one-third of the take.

"If people show interest in watching 'The Dark Knight,' then potentially movie studios will want to offer other movies, either temporarily or permanently on Facebook, and Facebook would love this kind of profit," said CNET.com's Caroline McCarthy.

It's an experiment with lots of potential in the still-emerging world of online video.

With more than 20 million subscribers, Netflix has been the front runner in video streaming rentals. Recently, Amazon has challenged with a similar offering.

If Warner's test with "The Dark Knight" proves successful, it could make Facebook a game changer for online movie distribution.

"It certainly could become a threat as the video business evolves, and you have these 500 million users and the wisdom of friends," said The Hollywood Reporter's Marisa Guthrie.

Facebook users who rent "The Dark Knight" have 48 hours to view it as many times as they want.

Warner Bros. is already saying they plan to roll out other titles both for rent and purchase on Facebook in the months ahead.

Video: Mark Zuckerberg's Five Best Made-for-TV Moments

It can be said that you're not really anybody until you've had the chance to host Saturday Night Live. Well, while Facebook's billionaire founder wasn't the one delivering the opening monologue last night, 26-year-old Mark Zuckerberg did make his first appearance on the late-night show.

And, in this case, he managed to finally meet his doppelganger: Jesse Eisenberg, the actor who played the Zuck himself in the eight Oscar-nominated film, The Social Network. ( Read Zuckerberg more... )

Zuckerberg yucks it up with Eisenberg on SNL

I've had an eyeful of television this week.

Straight after the State of the Union, there was the odd state of Tea Party spokeswoman Michelle Bachmann's eyes looking over our left shoulders as she spoke.

Last night, on "Saturday Night Live," we had Mark Zuckerberg staring so hard into the camera that he looked like an overcaffeinated nerd waiting desperately to secure a friend request--or at least a poke--from, well, Michelle Bachmann. ( Read Zuckerberg more... )

Jesse Eisenberg Bumps Into the Real Mark Zuckerberg on "SNL"

Mr. Eisenberg, meet Mr. Zuckerberg.

That’s what happened last night on "Saturday Night Live" when Academy Award-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg met real-life Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, whom he portrayed in the critically-acclaimed movie "The Social Network." ( Read Zuckerberg more... )

Facebook’s Focus In 2011: Better Cross-Platform Unification Led By HTML5

Saturday, 29 January 2011

Today at the Inside Social Apps conference in San Francisco, Inside Network’s Justin Smith sat down for a discussion with Facebook CTO Bret Taylor. The two talked about a wide range of issues including the company’s 2010 (when they cut spam by 95 percent, Taylor said). But there was a particular focus on 2011 and the ecosystem. So what’s next for Facebook’s Platform?

Taylor made it very clear that mobile was the big area of focus for the Platform in 2011. But at a higher level Taylor talked a bit about “streamlining things” with regard to all the different ways Facebook is used.

When we update something, there are about 7 different versions we have to update,” Taylor said. He rattled off a few: facebook.com, m.facebook.com, touch.facebook.com, the iPhone version, the Android version, etc. “It’s an incredible challenge,” he said. “And there’s feature-skew,” he continued.

Taylor noted that this same issue is a big problem for their third-party developers and partners as well. So how do they combat it? HTML5.

Taylor noted that while HTML5 has gotten a lot of hype in Silicon Valley, he does really believe that it’s the long-term answer. He said that Facebook is a bit ahead of the curve currently with over 125 million of their users accessing Facebook regularly from HTML5-compatible devices. “But we’re putting more in,” he said. “We’re getting to the point where it’s becoming a more mature platform,” he continued.

He noted that Facebook is going to release a lot of developer tools in the coming year so that third-parties can utilize HTML5 better as well.

When Smith asked if it was fair to say that Facebook would re-write or re-work things to make everything more standardized around technologies like HTML5, Taylor said, “At a high level, that’s the direction we’re going.”

Taylor credited both Apple and Google for doing great work in pushing HTML5 forward with their web browsers both on the desktop on on mobile. “It’s big for everyone in this room,” he said.

He did acknowledge that HTML5 was still a bit quirky when compared to native applications. “But the gap is closing,” Taylor concluded.

T-Pain Got a Facebook 'Like' Button Tattoo

T-Pain, Facebook Tatto

Rapper T-Pain introduced this new tattoo he got in Hawaii with a tweet: "I think this ones pretty sweet, unless facebook shuts down soon 0_o". That's what the guy who tattooed MySpace's Tom on his back said in 2002.

It kind of makes sense, this "like" button tattoo, if you consider the phenomenon of bad-tattoo-as-meme (and meme-as-bad-tattoo): Maybe T-Pain is trying to embody the viral success of his music. But it's also sort of dumb, because of the fact that he ruined his body and will be forced to spend his 70s and 80s explaining to young people what his tattoo means, after Facebook is replaced with cranial implants.

T-Pain and Gucci Mane should start their own viral phenomenon while there's still time: Rapperswithbadtattoos.com.

Skype Gets Serious Facebook Integration

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

Skype Facebook, Skype 5.0 ScreenshotsSkype 5.0 for Windows has just been released with a slew of improvements and feature additions, most significant of which is the inclusion of a Facebook tab that allows users to SMS, chat or call their Facebook friends via Skype right from the News Feed.

Skype’s Facebook integration is both sophisticated and sleek, and brings your Facebook experience inside Skype. Skype now offers a gateway to immediately call, text or chat with your Facebook contacts.

Facebook and Skype play nice inside the new Skype Home area of the application. Click the home icon and you’ll get the expanded Skype Home area, which is just a personal dashboard with news, alerts and a digest of mood messages. The new Facebook tab lives in this area, and this is where you can go to view your Facebook News Feed and Phonebook inside Skype.

The Facebook News Feed option will display a digest of activity nearly identical to what you would see if you were on Facebook, except that below each status update there are two noticeable Skype buttons: SMS or Call. The buttons appear if Facebook friends have included their phone number in their Facebook profile.

If the friend is a mutual connection on Skype, you’ll also have the option to initiate a free Skype call. And, if the Facebook friend is not already a Skype connection, but both of you are on Skype at the same time, the same free Skype call option is visible and an additional plus button will show up so you can add the Facebook friend as a Skype contact.

Skype’s News Feed integrations are great for initiating spontaneous contact around real-time updates, but you can also toggle over to the Facebook Phonebook section — a.k.a your Facebook contact list — should you want a more direct way to search for and reach specific friends.

These features are significant, but Skype’s latest 5.0 release includes way more than Facebook — there’s improved 10-way group video calling, much enhanced contact lists, more emphasis on profiles and a completely retooled user experience.

Video (video) calling, for instance, now includes a “dynamic view” option that automatically positions the person speaking in the larger video window. In addition, Skype promises improved (and still free) 10-way group video calling, and the company has released an automatic recovery feature that will get disconnected audio and video chatters back up and running in seconds.

Contact lists got a face lift with the prominent inclusion of photos, and members will be now nudged to add a photo to their profile. Profile photos will factor into the search experience, which should make it easier for members to better find and add their friends to Skype.

Ultimately, these big changes point to Skype’s designs to be more than a secondary utility, and instead the primary connector between friends, family and our social contacts. Unfortunately, we Mac users will have to wait patiently for these features to make their way to us. Skype makes no promises on timing, but does tell Mashable that a similar Mac version is coming soon.

Facebook and Bing’s Plan to Make Search Social

Microsoft and Facebook have announced a new partnership that brings “Like” data and profile search to Bing. The deal marks a big leap forward in social search and also represents a new advantage for Bing –- which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared the “underdog” in search during today’s press conference -– in its quest to take market share from Google.

Starting today, Bing (Bing) users now get an experience that’s customized using Facebook Instant Personalization. For now, that means searches (where appropriate) will feature a Facebook (Facebook) module that shows you what your friends have liked as it relates to that search, as well as a smarter people search results.

The Bing and Facebook teams offered a few examples of how that might be useful during today’s press event: surfacing restaurants that your friends like, pulling in movie likes from IMDB (imdb) or articles that have been shared about a car you might be eyeing. With the like button now being used by more than two million sites and Facebook passing 500 million members, there’s now enough scale to make that type of data surface on a regular basis in search.
Bing Social Search, Facebook Social Search

Beyond that, Bing is trying to dramatically improve people search, which Bing’s Senior VP Online Audience Business Yusuf Mehdi said makes up about 4% of searches. Much like Facebook’s site, Bing will recommend new friends based on mutual relationships. Bing now surfaces that data when you search for a name (for example, a “Bob Smith” that five of your friends know will come up higher than a “Bob Smith” that none of them know). From search results, you can add people as friends or send them a message.

Bing Social Search, Facebook Social SearchThe future gets even more interesting though. Bing and Facebook said they’re working on including like data from friends alongside each search result. Further out, the companies see an opportunity to surface people who are experts in specific subjects.

At face value, Facebook integration certainly seems to make Bing search better in some instances. I know I’d be more inclined to click on a link in search results if one of my friends had liked it. Does that make me more likely to use Bing over Google (Google)? Not necessarily, though for the examples offered –- where opinion matters –- Bing’s “decision engine” differentiator starts to make a lot more sense.

Will Facebook integration make you more likely to use Bing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Facebook's New Comment System Lets You Dislike Things

Tuesday, 19 October 2010

Facebook New Comment System
Facebook users have been clamoring for a dislike button ever since the site first added its "like" feature. And, judging from the network's new comments plugin, it appears that Mark Zuckerberg has finally heard our pleas to hate on things with the click of a button. The tool isn't being added to people's Facebook profiles (at least not yet), and the word "dislike" never actually makes an appearance. But the new threaded commenting system (which you can see on the security post pictured above) does have buttons that allow you to vote up or down on a particular comment, Reddit style.

While it's unclear if voting up or down has any impact on comment positioning, the new system always keeps your comments and accompanying threads at the top. For now, the system is limited to Facebook (where it would be a welcome addition the new Groups feature), but it's easy to imagine it being ported to external sites, as well, taking on services like Disqus and Intense Debate. Facebook's march towards Internet dominance continues!

"Deleted" Facebook photos still not deleted: a followup

Monday, 18 October 2010

Deleted Facebook PhotosFacebook may be making strides in some areas of privacy, but the company is still struggling when it comes to deleting user photos—or not deleting them, as the case may be.

We wrote a piece more than a year ago examining whether photos really disappear from social network servers when you delete them, and found that Facebook was one of the worst offenders when it came to leaving "deleted" photos online. We decided to revisit the issue recently when readers continued to point out that our deleted photos from that article were still online more than 16 months later. Indeed, this old photo of me remains on Facebook's content delivery network (CDN) servers, despite being deleted on May 21, 2009.

When we originally inquired with Facebook in 2009 about this, the company tried to tell us that deleted images were inaccessible even though they were on the server (a statement that's obviously false if you have a direct link to the image file, as we do). Simultaneously, Facebook told Ars that it was "working with" its CDN partner to "significantly reduce the amount of time that backup copies persist."

The company, it turns out, is mostly sticking to that party line. "For all practical purposes, the photo no longer exists, and we wouldn’t be able find it if we were asked or even compelled to do so," Facebook spokesperson Simon Axten told Ars via e-mail this week. "This is similar to what happens when you delete information from the hard drive of your computer."

Facebook does acknowledge now that the photos are technically accessible by some people, but basically repeats the line about working with the CDN. "It's possible that someone who previously had access to a photo and saved the direct URL from our content delivery network partner could still access the photo," Axten said. "However, again, the person would have to know the URL, and the photo only exists in the CDN's cache for a limited amount of time. We're working with the CDN to reduce the amount of time that the photo remains in its cache."

It seems we haven't quite found the limits of that "limited amount of time" just yet—after all, 16 months is quite a while. The other social networks in our original report have all removed our images from their servers by now, and Facebook is the lone holdout.

We'll keep checking up with Facebook to see if and when the situation gets improved, but in the meantime, we're sticking with our original party line too: if you don't want to give your enemies blackmail material, don't upload questionable photos in the first place. If you've already uploaded such photos and tried to delete them, then keep your fingers crossed that no one has the direct URLs saved somewhere.

Update (Oct. 12): After widespread coverage of this particular problem, Facebook has apparently removed my "deleted" photo from its CDN server. However, as far as we're aware, this problem is still in place for all other Facebook users who don't have the privilege of drawing widespread attention to the problem like we do. I've deleted another couple of photos from my Facebook profile in order to keep watching the issue.

Update 2: Ars reader Andrew Bourke e-mailed to say that a family member uploaded a semi-nude photo of his son and then deleted it more than 2.5 years ago (we agreed not to link it directly for privacy reasons). The photo still remains on Facebook's CDN servers today, despite repeated requests to Facebook to have the photo removed. Another reader named Filippo e-mailed to say that he deleted this photo in April of 2009, which also remains on the servers today.

Update 3: Facebook spokesperson Simon Axten checked back in with us after our latest updates above and said that the company is actively working with its CDN on this issue. "We're currently working with the CDN on a fix that will delete photo and video content from the CDN's cache shortly after it's removed on Facebook," Axten said. "The fix is already in place for videos, and we hope to implement it for profile pictures and photos in the coming weeks."

Top 25 Facebook games for August 2010

Saturday, 21 August 2010

Facebook Games
The Top 25 Facebook games for the month of July have been released by Inside Social Games, and even though FarmVille is still king of the hill -- the farming game is still losing players, while other Zynga games like Texas Hold 'Em Poker, Cafe World, FrontierVille and even PetVille are closing the gap by adding new players this month. Overall, however, it looks like the rampant loss of players is slowing down, and that's probably bringing a sigh of relief to everyone involved.

Otherwise, the list of top 25 games all look rather familiar, with exception of Booyah's Nightclub City, which makes its debut on the list this month. There doesn't seem to be any actual numbers for Nightclub City on this table, but AppData says that the game has 5,440,973 monthly active users, which could be a testament to how social gamers are on the hunt for the next big thing.

Which of these top 25 Facebook games do you play on a regular basis?

Ramai di Internet, Besar di Dunia Nyata

Wednesday, 4 August 2010

(umi)

Who will be Facebook's next 500 million?

Wednesday, 21 July 2010

FacebookFacebook isn't letting its milestone of 500 million active users around the world go unnoticed, with a big "Facebook Stories" user testimony promotion rolling out and normally press-shy CEO Mark Zuckerberg making a Wednesday evening appearance on the ABC World News broadcast in the form of an interview with anchor Diane Sawyer.
There will likely be a lot of talk about Facebook's roots as a wildfire phenomenon among college students in elite U.S. universities and how, thanks to its incremental spread through schools and offices and communities, there are now half a billion people flitting around on its iconic blue-and-white pages. But, looking to the future: who will the next half billion Facebook users be?

"We should expect that mainstream adoption of Facebook users in countries outside of the North America will continue to grow," Altimeter Group analyst Jeremiah Owyang told CNET. "Facebook even threatens domination in niche countries where social networks at a regional level are present."

That's been one of Facebook's biggest growth obstacles overseas: the fact that while it was spreading in the U.S., other social networks were growing fast in other countries. None of them has gotten anywhere close to Facebook's global power, but subtle cultural discrepancies and loyal user bases have meant that it hasn't been easy for Facebook to convince its user bases to make the switch. In many countries overseas, Facebook didn't start to catch on until it was available in the native language, and Facebook's translations rolled out relatively slowly. These started about two and a half years ago with a handful of European languages.

"Penetration (of Facebook into regional Internet markets) is highest in North America, at 69 percent, and Middle East-Africa, at 67 percent, and still pretty high in Latin America (58 percent) and Europe (57 percent)," explained Andrew Lipsman, senior director of industry analysis at traffic firm ComScore. "But there is still a lot of room for growth in Asia-Pacific, which currently has just 17 percent market penetration."

In Facebook's original U.S. market, reports have started to indicate that growth may be plateauing, particularly among young adults. But there are some surprisingly big, well-connected countries where Facebook still has a lot of work to do. Take a country like Germany, where Facebook has only 39 percent market penetration. A regional social network called StudiVZ has proven a formidable rival to Facebook, and German authorities' relative hostility toward Facebook's very U.S.-grown privacy policies may make things tougher. Then there's Brazil, where ComScore charts Facebook's market penetration at just over 22 percent; the Google-owned social network Orkut never caught on in the U.S., but Brazilians love it, and still haven't been completely sold on Facebook as a result.

Some of the countries that ComScore has flagged as potential areas for growth--possibly in tune with strategic efforts on Facebook's part--are Japan, with a 7 percent market penetration; Russia, with 6 percent; and South Korea, with 8 percent. There's also China, where government censors have cracked down on access to Facebook along with other social-networking sites.

We're starting to see some of the growth strategies in place already. Earlier this month, Facebook inked a deal with MOL Global, the Malaysian e-commerce company that owns would-be social-net rival Friendster, to make its Credits virtual currency more accessible in some Southeast Asian countries.

"There is definitely a path to a billion users for Facebook, but how long it takes will depend a great deal on its strategy to spur adoption in some of the larger, low-penetration markets," Lipsman told CNET. "Making a push in India right now is an example of going after what is still relatively low-hanging fruit as a large and growing market with room for continued penetration that does not have significant cultural barrier to adoption."
