GameStop shares slide after Piper downgrade

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of GameStop Corp. inched lower Monday after a Piper Jaffray analyst downgraded the world's largest video game store chain, saying the shift toward game downloads, tablet and mobile phone games will "clearly" hurt brick and mortar retailers.

Analyst Anthony N. Gikas downgraded GameStop to "Underweight" from "Neutral" and lowered his target price to $17 from $18.50. The analyst thinks there is a "good chance" that the company will experience peak net income in the 2010-2011 fiscal years. GameStop's fiscal years end in January. ( Read Gamestop more... )

‘Angry Turds’ Is Like ‘Angry Birds’ Except With, Yes, Turds

Angry Turds

Ever wish Angry Birds had more poop in it? Well look no further than the App Store today, as Apps Genius has launched Angry Turds. As a monkey in Angry Turds, you get to battle evil island explorers who have stolen your monkey babies with various projectile weapons.

The concept is similar to Angry Birds as your objective is to throw stuff but the stuff here goes beyond rocks to coconuts, turds, banana bombs and grand poop-bas (I am so glad I never spent any money getting a journalism degree).

Angry Birds addicts will be happy to discover that the touch action of throwing objects is exactly the same as in Angry Birds except there’s no slingshot. The weapons themselves each have varying properties in terms of force and levels of destruction per throw.

What’s even more amazing than the fact that someone made this is that the App Store thinks that the word “turds” needs censorship (as in “Angry T*rds for iPhone”) but the word “poop” is as clean as the Pope himself.

For example:
“There is only one way to stop them, throw some t**ds! With your arsenal of t**ds, coconuts, poop bombs and bananas”
On why he chose this specific name and concept, Apps Genius CEO Adam Kotkin told us “People are into the whole poop thing. When you speak with a 12 year old you realize that they know more than the rest of us … It’s fun to throw poop around. Poop sells.”

Angry Turds is available in both free and $0.99 paid versions, with 10 levels and 30 levels respectively, in case you need to step your turd game up. You can download the app here.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Tech Demo Shown On NGP

Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima took the stage as this year’s PlayStation Meeting to show off a tech demo of Metal Gear Solid 4 running on the PSP2, or NGP as it’s tentatively known.

While Kojima was keen to note that the demonstration was merely a test, not an actual product, it’s certainly a testament to the NGP’s capabilities. You have to take into account the demo was essentially a quick and dirty port of MGS4 with all original PS3 assets intact. Despite the lack of optimization, NGP runs it admirably. ( Readmore... )

Top 7 Outdoor Thanksgiving Games

The prospect of Thanksgiving and family togetherness brings about the need for traditions. Along with the television football games, the sun of the outdoors calls too many families. What better way to get the grownups and kids involved but to play a Thanksgiving game. Family events are never the same after introducing a few family activities to work up an appetite or work off that extra turkey. So throw on a coat and head outdoors to play at least one Thanksgiving game.

1. Popcorn Relay Race: This Thanksgiving game is great to play as well as yummy. Break up into teams, giving each team a large bowl of popcorn and measuring cup. Place an empty bowl approximately 15-20 feet away from the starting line. The object is for each member of the two teams to carry a measuring cup full of popcorn to their empty bowl. The team that empties out their bowl first wins the game.
2. Harvest Hunt: This is more fun for the kids than for the parents. Place a tarp on the ground and stack as many leaves as possible into a large stack for this Thanksgiving game. Family activities involve the adults hiding candy and small toys inside the leaves. The kids are then encouraged to attack the leaf pile to look for their treats.
3. Football: This Thanksgiving game is stand-by for family events is great for all ages. If there are little ones involved then you may want to restrict it to touch or flag football. The kids can even make the flag belts before the game as additional family activities. Holding the game before the big dinner will help to make sure everyone is hungry.
4. Pumpkin Bowling: This special Thanksgiving game is great for those little pumpkins that no one ever wants for Halloween. Use those empty 2 liter bottles of soda people brought to the family activities, about 10 of them filled with a little bit of sand to keep them from falling over. Set them up as bowling pins and use the smaller pumpkins as bowling balls.
5. Flour Tag: This messy Thanksgiving game is perfect for the outdoors. Using all those mismatched socks, fill them with flour. You will need one for each person. This is similar to dodge ball; however the players are equipped with the flour socks. Players try to peg each other while avoiding being hit themselves. The white spots on the clothing will indicate if they are hit or not. Flour can be wiped off with a damp cloth. Set a timer and let the fun begin. The game is over when the timer goes off and whoever has the least amount of flour hits is the winner.
6. Three-Legged Race: This old-fashioned Thanksgiving game is simple to do with just the rope to tie the contestant’s legs together. A real trial of teamwork is needed to make it to the finish line first.
7. Pumpkin Seed Spitting: This Thanksgiving game is perfect for all of the kids at the family events that want to get gross. What kid does not want to have permission to spit? The rules are simple, whoever can spit the seeds the longest distance away is the winner. This game can go on and on as even the adults try to outdistance the others.

Anna Chapman, Russian Spy, Bets On New iPhone Poker App

Monday, 25 October 2010

Anna ChapmanAnna Chapman knows when to hold ‘em, fold ‘em, walk away and when to run with a new business venture.

ABCNews.com is reporting that the alleged Russian spy is coming out with an iPhone app so that you can play poker against her.

The application, Poker With Anna Chapman, at $1.99, allows players to take on the Russian sex symbol in either Texas Hold’em or Five Card Draw. There are prizes offered if the player is able to vanquish the virtual Chapman in the hand, says Poker News Daily.

Winners be able to access to a special photo gallery of the sexy flame-haired spook, which are reported to be similar to those she took for the latest issue of Russian version of Maxim, where she posed dressed in lingerie and leather and holding a cocked revolver. They will also be able to become her Facebook friend–a real-time ticker of her relationship status and various musings and goings-on–plus a peek into a private blog.

It’s a window, according to ads for the app, for the playing (and paying) public to see “her secrets and private life details firsthand” and get “a glance at her social life with parties, shopping, and more.”

The app appeared because Anna is a huge fan of Apple products,” ABCNews quoted Angela Waters, marketing manager for Zeda Inc., the manufacturer. “She has been using an iPhone and Mac for quite a while and has recently got an iPad too.”

Since her July arrest and deportation from the U.S. for being part of a Russian sleeper cell, Chapman, who in Cold War days would likely have set up housekeeping in Siberia, has been a busy girl. Along with the racy Maxim shoot, she was recently lavishly feted with vodka and medals from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, attended a space rocket launch in Kazakhstan, is an advisor to a Moscow-based bank and is selling action figures in her femme fatale likeness. She’s also, of course, writing a book.

In a late July post titled, “Anna Chapman: Sexy Russian Spy or Real Estate Whiz,” Forbes’ Meghan Casserly wonders: “Who is Anna Chapman? A Bond babe-esque femme fatale who ‘flitted from high-profile parties to top-secret meetings around Manhattan’ or a hard-working entrepreneur?”

All my chips go on former into the latter. She’s learned much from her time in the U.S., ripping her playbook straight from the likes of Kim Kardashian. As Jenna Goudreau recently wrote about the reality star and entrepreneur on Forbes: “Known for her beauty and sex appeal, she realized she could leverage her fans’ interest…And she just keeps on leveraging it.”

It’s worth noting the context Chapman has been deported into: The number of poor Russians stands 19.7 million, or 15% of the country’s population, according to Bloomberg, with a subsistence level of $174 a month. The number billionaires in Russia has doubled over the last year, from 32 up to 62, according to the Russian edition of Forbes.

That’s where Chapman fits in. She is a lesson in brand-building. It’s not necessarily an ugly word. If she didn’t do it herself, as Kelly Watson points out in “Who You Callin’ A Brand?” someone else would. Clearly Chapman is being proactive about her image, one with international notoriety and, dare I point out, of real value in some quarters. She’s looking to up what she’s worth, and is thinking far (action doll) and wide (online poker).

Tacky? Check. Entrepreneurial? You bet. Cheap? Hardly.

Xbox Kinect's game launch lineup revealed

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

Seventeen Kinect
Seventeen Kinect-enabled games will be available when the device makes its debut next month.

Microsoft has just announced the 17 games that will be available on launch day with Kinect for Xbox 360, the tech giant's highly anticipated controller-free gaming system.

Kinect, which launches on November 4, is Microsoft's answer to the Nintendo Wii's motion controllers, which helped turn that console into one of this generation's most popular gaming devices.

Both Sony and Microsoft have been playing catch-up with the PlayStation Move and Kinect, respectively.

Seventeen Kinect-enabled games will be available when the device makes its debut next month. Here's the full list:

Kinect Adventures: This is the game that is included with every Kinect device. It helps introduce gamers to the Kinect interface, letting them transverse the rapids, float around in space and challenge their friends to races, among other minigames.

Kinectimals: Think Nintendogs, but with no controller.

Game Party: In Motion: This includes a collection of party minigames like Darts.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1 The Videogame: You can now control Harry's magic with your hands.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved: A fitness game from Ubisoft that is similar to Wii Fit.

Dance Central: This game, made by the creators of Rock Band, tracks your dance moves. We've heard good things about this one.

The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout: A game from THQ based on the TV show.

DanceMasters: Konami's version of getting your groove down.

EA SPORTS Active 2: A fitness game with body tracking, heart rate data and the ability to share workout data. EA has gone all-out with this game, which sort of explains its $100 price tag.

Zumba Fitness: See a pattern yet? This is a dance fitness game.

Kinect Sports: Microsoft's version of Wii Sports.

MotionSports: This game from Ubisoft includes live in-game commentary and 40+ sports challenges.

DECA SPORTS FREEDOM: While this game only has 10 sporting events, there is a focus on making it feel as real as possible. Figure skating should be interesting.

Kinect Joy Ride: Controller-free kart racing.

ADRENALIN MISFITS: This racing/battle game focuses on fantasy worlds.

Fighters Uncaged: Fulfill your Fight Club fantasy without the bloody concussions and stitches.

SONIC FREE RIDERS: Yup, Sega is bringing Sonic the Hedgehog to Kinect.

What do you think of Kinect's launch day lineup? Let us know in the comments.

Computer Defeats Japan's Top-Ranked Human Shogi Player

Monday, 18 October 2010

IBM Deep Blue, Shogi Player
Computers have been beating humans at games for a while now. Remember IBM's Deep Blue, which beat chess champ Gary Kasparov way back in 1997? More recently, IBM developed a supercomputer that could defeat a human at 'Jeopardy.' Despite these advances, computers haven't overthrown the human race -- yet.

But, according to The Mainichi Daily News a computer dubbed Akara 2010 recently defeated Japan's top female player at shogi -- a Japanese game similar to chess. It took Akara, whose name is taken from a Buddhist term representing the number of unique shogi games possible (for the record, 10,224), a full six hours and 86 moves to defeat Ichiyo Shimizu during the game, which was played at the University of Tokyo. Shimizu told the Daily News that the computer didn't pull any surprising moves (or, we assume, talk smack). "It made no eccentric moves, and from partway through it felt like I was playing against a human," she said.

StarDunk going to a free demo model

StarDunk, iPhone GameStarDunk is one of my most favorite apps recently, ever since I covered it back for Daily App a little while ago. It's an amusing little 2D basketball game, made even more impressive by the fact that it juggles online multiplayer across the world -- as you throw baskets, you're also playing in real-time against other users, and competing with various powerups and stunts for as many points as possible. The game was also notable for being one of the first titles integrated into Game Center, back when that service first arrived on the iPhone.

But the app hasn't been doing as great as it could be, according to developer Godzilab -- first, they had some issues with piracy, and now they're saying that the game's just not selling as many copies as they'd hoped.

So the game has gone free -- kind of. You can pick it up right now in the App Store for free, and play ten games without paying a single cent. Once you've played those games, then you have the option to buy the whole app via in-app purchase for $2.99. That's not exactly freemium (it's more of a demo version), but at least players will be able to get a feel for the game and how it works before laying down their three bucks. Personally, I still recommend the game -- I bought it on my own and still enjoy a quick game (even though I usually land in the middle of the rankings). But if you've been waiting for a chance to try it out, definitely take advantage of the new model.

Raptr releases free iPhone app

Raptr, iPhone GamesRaptr is one of the gaming social networks that seems to have some staying power -- the idea is that you can broadcast and track what and when you're playing, and the network will share all of that information with your friends as it happens. Raptr has just introduced an iPhone app that allows you to check in on all your friends and their gaming habits from anywhere, and even send messages across to Xbox Live with just one inbox.

The app is free on the App Store, but if you're brand new to Raptr, you'll want to head over to their site and create an account first (and probably pick up the desktop client, too, although it's Windows-only at the moment). If you're already a Raptr user, then there's no reason not to have this app.

That said, a few recent App Store reviews say the app has a problem with friends list loading. I didn't see any issues, but be warned. I'm sure the Raptr team is hard at work on fixing any issues that come up.

40+ great open source apps & games to trick out your new Windows install

Sunday, 17 October 2010

Mozilla FirefoxThis weekend I finished setting up a fresh triple-boot install on my MSI laptop. With my operating systems ready to go, the time had come to start reinstalling applications. While it wasn't a conscious decision, I noticed that the majority of my apps were Open Source - so I decided to keep the ball rolling.

Even if you haven't just gone through a reformat, these are great applications and well worth installing. If you have, then hopefully this list will provide you with a solid base of programs to get you started with your fresh, new Windows install!

Web Browsers: Chromium, Firefox
They excel at different things, so I install both browsers by default. Chromium is great for all-purpose surfing, while I use Firefox and my favorite extensions to tackle my daily web-based work.

Office: OpenOffice.Org, Sumatra, PDFCreator
For lightweight PDF reading and creation from any Windows app, Sumatra and PDFCreator are solid options. OpenOffice.Org, well, it's the name to beat in open source suites.

Media: Songbird, VLC, Handbrake, DVD Flick
I've been using VLC for ages, and it does everything I need as my video player of choice. Audio duties I leave up to Songbird, which has matured into a fantastic application over the past two years. I use Handbrake to, uh, rip my non-encrypted, personal DVDs. DVD Flick lets me burn said rips back onto a disc.

Free Download Manager
File Transfer: Free Download Manager, Cabos, eMule
FDM is a very underrated torrent app, and it has plenty of other download-boosting abilities as well. I chose it over Vuze because I need FDM's extras (partial zips, Flash downloading, Rapidshare integration) more than Vuze's additional media-handling chops. Cabos trims Limewire down to the bare minimum for the occasional one-off Gnutella download. As for eMule, I use it to find things that I can't find elsewhere.

Imaging: ZScreen, Inkscape, Gimphoto/GimPad, Flickr Uploadr
If you're comfortable with Photoshop but looking for a free alternative, go with Gimphoto instead of Gimp – the interface is very Adobe-esque. For vector image jobs, Inkscape can't be beat. ZScreen handles my screen captures and Flickr Uploadr, well, it does what it says.

Burning and Backup: Infrarecorder, WinCDEmu, Bonkey, and DirSyncPro
These three apps make short work of mounting disc image files, burning just about anything, syncing folders, and keeping a current copy of your files in a safe location.

Spaz
Messaging and Social Networking: Pidgin and Spaz
Don't sic Mr. Stallman on me – I know Spaz is built on Adobe Air, but the client itself is open. As for multi-protocol messaging apps, Pidgin is a tough bird to beat.

Maintenance and Utilities: 7zip, Belvedere, Ultra Defrag, Disk Cleaner, TrueCrypt
Lifehacker's Belvedere is a great way to organize your files and folders with minimal effort. Ultra Defrag and Disk Cleaner (and a handful of helpful plugins) keep your hard drive clutter free and performing its best. 7zip waits in your context menu to extract files from (or cram files into) archives of all kinds. For encrypting files, folders, or entire volumes, Truecrypt is fast and reliable.

Desktop Enhancements: RocketDock, Launchy, Virtual Dimension
You don't really need both RocketDock and Launchy. If you prefer eye candy, go with Rocket Dock. If you're a keyboard magician, go with Launchy. I run Virtual Dimension because my forays into Linux have me hooked on the benefits of virtual desktops.

Nexuiz, LinCity-NGGames: AssaultCube, Enigma, FreeCiv, LexJongg, LinCity, Neverball, Nexuiz, PokerTH, TORCS, Tremulous, WinSudoku, Wormux, Zombies.

Using your computer shouldn't be all work, all the time. Kick back and relax or give you brain a casual workout with these great games. LexJongg puts a slightly technogeek spin on traditional mahjong. FPS fans should check out AssaultCube, Nexuiz, and Tremulous. FreeCiv and LinCity offer OSS takes on two classic PC simulations. TORCS is a solid 3d racing sim which will hopefully soon include online action. Wormux and Zombies are fun turn-based strategy games. WinSudoku and PokerTH - I'll assume you know what those are all about.

There you go - plenty of great OSS to load on your own freshly reinstalled system (or a friend's)! If I missed one of your favorite apps or games, share it in the comments!

BadBoy: Anti Spam Automatic Reporter

BadBoy Anti Spam Automatic ReporterBadBoy history/description :

With the introduction of the Blizzard chat throttle added in WoW v4, BadBoy has removed the code for throttling chat and for filtering ASCII art. On top of that I'm hoping the floating spam bots have been fixed so I've removed the sleep emote filter.

BadBoy is now once again a nice and simple gold/hack/phishing/casino blocker & reporter. However I will adapt this addon if people find new ways to get past Blizzard's code.

Can I configure it?

Type /badboy ingame

What sets this aside from other spam blockers?

BadBoy was created with a focus on assisting Blizzard and the user with spam removal, whilst being a light and efficient addon.

ESPNU College Town, Social CityNow that the 5 Days of Gifting College Town is over in Social City, Playdom has another ESPNU College Town promotion in the works -- reach Level 5 in ESPNU College Town for a free a Track and Field stadium in Social City.

Here's some tips to level up quickly in ESPNU College: First of all, the game starts you off with two venues, a field and a gym. Upgrading these will net you a ton of XP. After that, you should click on the venues to "Start Event", which is more or less identical to creating "Contracts" for the Factories in Social City.

Next, buy and install as many buildings as you can. The act of installing buildings will help you earn XP, and after that's done, the buildings can begin making money for you. You can use this money to upgrade your venues. All this should quickly get you to Level 3.

Happy Aquarium: Twilight-inspired fish sparkle and transform for Halloween

Happy AquariumIn the spirit of glittering vampires and really ripped werewolves--or Halloween these days--CrowdStar has revisited some old and introduced some new fish to Happy Aquarium. Jacob Black--er, the Werewolf returns from the Twilit theme for 48 Facebook Credits ($4.80) and, yes, he still transforms when you click him. The newest addition to the 'Halloween-themed' fish is Edward Cullen the Sparkling Vampire that for 55 Facebook Credits, or $5.50, sparkles when you click him. Oh, how fitting.

There is also a new wallpaper to go with your no-so-frightening fish: the Cemetery for 30 Facebook Credits, or $3. Its description reads, "Put fear into your tank with this Cemetery setting." Not with those fish, you won't. If there's one thing I can say about CrowdStar's paid currency items, it's that while most of them are shallow pop culture references, some of them are just plain hilarious.

Pet Society: Buy a Slow Loris to give a little to the World Wildlife Fund

World Wildlife Fund, WWFIt's no surprise that the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the flagship charity of Pet Society, but what is unfortunately surprising is how much Playfish is giving to their charity of choice. Buying the adorable new Slow Loris pet accessory--and any other WWF item for that matter--will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to WWF.

While that might sound like a lot, 10 percent of 8 Playfish Cash--if paid for in Facebook Credits--amounts to about 8 cents. That doesn't seem like a lot, does it? (But there is strength in numbers.) Anyway, buying the Slow Loris from the WWF section in the Boutique places the doe-eyed primate on your pet's head making for a (somewhat) lively head accessory. Hey, at least it'll look better on your head than this dress. However, we recommend that if you really want to make a donation to the WWF to make it direct as not much of your money will be going there through the Slow Loris. If only these animals weren't endangered, I'd be all over that bug-eyed monkey as my next real pet.

Review: Dead Rising 2

Wednesday, 6 October 2010

By Laurence Cutner

Price: £44.99 Xbox 360, PS3, PC

Dead Rising 2If you have played on the original Dead Rising, or seen any film relating to zombies, or generally blood, guts and worldwide epidemics then you will be immediately familiar with this.

Dead Rising 2 is the latest sequel in the classic series - and one of the most anticipated games of the year.

Within moments of the story beginning in “Fortune City”, zombies break-out in their hordes, hungry for blood.

The story establishes around the main character Chuck Greene, an ex-stunt motorbike star and revengeful father, full of hate and anger at the zombie menace for eating his wife in Las Vegas and infecting his daughter, Katy who now requires regular dosages of zombie-antivirus called “Zombrex”.
Now the former motocross star must become the hero to save his daughter and repel the zombie invasion.

As well as searching for Katie’s fix every 24 hours. Chuck has tasked himself with exploring the entire city and rescuing as many survivors as possible and investigating and uncovering the source of the zombie outbreak.

For a hero on a strict schedule and responsibilities, Chuck sure does take his time around things from getting one place to another.

Playing the game you are constantly distracted by new weapons of using to eliminate your foes. The most enjoyable areas (with all of the zombies and weapons!) of the game are the shopping districts.

Where you will find the various different stores offering useful bits and pieces to shred, drill, stab, smoulder and burn all of your enemies. The map area is all suspiciously similar to the original Dead Rising, there is a central park surrounded by shopping districts, only this time there are some dull casinos added on.

For all intents and purposes, it's the same game from the original in a slightly different setting and without Frank West (main character from the first Dead Rising). It's a larger, but not longer story-line. And there are countless new weapons with which to polish off enemies.

The game still contains the same ancient graphics that you wouldn’t expect in a brand new sequel, and registering the difference between a light and a heavy hit is a cause for concern when wading through mountains of zombies.

Dead Rising 2

Chuck rampages through the streets taking out zombies and rescuing survivors

Dead Rising 2’s claim to fame is the newly-implemented combo-weapons takethe chore of zombie slaying to the next level - the “Chainsaw Bike”, “Pitchfork Shotgun” and “Flaming Gloves” all pretty much speak for themselves.

If the first Dead Rising wasn’t for you, the Dead Rising 2 is unlikely to win you over in any way at all. But there are a little or less significant changes that do improve aspects from its predecessor.

The most notable will be the ability of saving in multiple slots in the new saving system. In the original Dead Rising, you were only given just the one save slot, which led to many gamers being forced to restart the entire game.

You'll possibly be forced to restart the game in Dead Rising 2 as well on the occasion of missing a helpless survivor, not having enough health to carry on through the game or just too beleaguered to put up with a certain level, but never down to erroneous saving. Saving the game on multiple slots will give you the benefit of choosing different save slots to gain the advantage over completing the game with ease.

There is perhaps one vital improvement from the first Dead Rising, and perhaps the most significant one, is the way saviours behave. When rushing through the district; no longer do the survivors stand surrounded by zombies as some kind of free salad bar.

In Dead Rising 2 they do now put up a bit of a fight.

Adding to the fun of the massacre of killing zombies by you there is the new co-op mode. There's no element of actual “co-operative” play, nothing that requires two players to strategically work through, it's just massacring as many zombies side by side. So too is the versus multiplayer feature mode.

The Dead Rising series is an odd one. There's a strange combination between restriction and fun, and I still feel they have a long way to go before they get the game absolutely perfect.

Failing in creating a new and unique storyline is just the start, just killing zombies isn't quite rewarding enough, while playing in the course of the story is a restrictive habit and the player then struggles to get the essence that they are playing a game than the game's structure may suggest it could be.

The balance of the game still hasn't been found yet; a few more tweaks and additions may be needed to make this series of legendary calibre. The Dead Rising series is taking its first steps towards the greatness that it really should have by now.

Dead Rising 2 offers the player very little more than the original, but what it does offer has largely been improved.

Playable Taliban Jeopardized U.S. Army's Support For Medal Of Honor

Taliban Jeopardized, U.S. Army's Support For Medal Of Honor
Electronic Arts' military shooter set during the modern war in Afghanistan could have lost its official U.S. Army support over the inclusion of Taliban fighters as playable characters in the game's online mode, military officials told Kotaku.

The U.S. Army, which officially supported the development of Medal of Honor, didn't find out about the inclusion of playable Taliban fighters in the game until the title was nearly finished, said Kenneth Hawes, director of the U.S. Army's Public Affairs Office Western Region.

Despite working with the developers on capturing sound, going over the campaign's story and allowing photo shoots of vehicles like the Apache attack helicopter, the U.S. Army was never told about the game's multiplayer modes, Hawes said.

The director learned of the Taliban's inclusion after the issue made a splash around the world in media reports following the game's showing at the annual E3 video game convention in Los Angeles.

"We immediately contacted Electronic Arts and asked them to give us a demonstration of the game's capabilities," Hawes said.

Hawes and a team traveled to the studio on Aug. 27 to see the game's multiplayer modes first hand. What he saw did not please him.

"You have to understand I'm not a gamer," Hawes told Kotaku. "We provide support on major motion pictures, television and video games, but I didn't grow up with video games. So personally I was a little disappointed they included that scenario."

Hawes said he understands that when a military shooter has an online element there needs to be "theoretical good guys and theoretical bad guys."

"But our concern is that this is an ongoing conflict, soldiers are engaged every day, our sons and daughters are dying at the hands of the Taliban," he said.

When asked what the reaction of the Department of Defense was when he passed on the word of the nature of the Taliban's inclusion in multiplayer he said he thinks they were "a little surprised."

Electronic Arts declined to comment for this article.

While not necessary, early on in the development of their latest Medal of Honor game, Electronic Arts approached Hawes' office for official support of the game by the Army. That entails the Army and the developer signing a production assistance agreement which gives the Army a chance to check out the product being made and the movie, TV or video game developers access to locations, weapons, soldiers and vehicles.

Ret. Lt. Col. Greg Bishop, who worked under Hawes overseeing the support before retiring, told Kotaku that he and his team worked with EA on a number of things for the game including recording sounds of weapons being fired and granting the developer access to Apache helicopters for digitizing.

They even rigged several Apache helicopters with microphones during a training event to capture the sound of the weapons being fired.

Bishop said he initially had concerns over the idea behind the game, a military shooter set during a ongoing conflict, but meeting with the developers assured him.

"We had a really good meeting with them and they expressed not only their level of respect for the American soldier but showed us how the franchise has always been that way," Bishop said.

And, Bishop said, the developers really seemed to know what they were talking about.

But they didn't hear a thing about multiplayer gameplay.

"I don't think there was anything nefarious about them not showing it to us," he said. "They were always respectful of us. They realized they were treading on some delicate ground."

Retired Army Captain Brian Chung, who was wounded in Iraq and awaiting medical discharge when EA came to the U.S. Army for support, also helped out on the game. It's Chung's finger pulling the trigger on most of the weapons you hear in the game.

Chung said he was impressed by the developer's attention to detail and realism.

"The video game is loosely based on actual events and we were bringing in colonels and generals of that war," he said. "When they saw it they were blown away.

"One colonel started sweating when he saw the demonstration."

Chung also thinks Electronic Arts' failure to show the Army the game's multiplayer was accidental.

He first heard about the inclusion of Taliban when he read about it on Kotaku, he said. His reaction was mixed.

"The whole notion of cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians, that doesn't work," he said. "This isn't in the past. If you say Taliban and U.S. troops, that is going on now, there are soldiers dying every day."

"The Army's support of the game was based on the single player only," Chung said. "My understanding is that they were only 80 percent done with single player and hadn't started multiplayer development yet."

Bishop said that knowledge of the multiplayer mode would certainly have raised red flags for the Army.

"If we would have asked the question, or they would have told us, if we would have known, we would have come up with a solution," Bishop said.

Chung and Bishop now run private consultant company MUSA Consulting, which works as a liaison between the entertainment world and the military one. Bishop says understanding the culture of the military and gaming can help avoid these situations.

"If you don't know the culture, if you don't understand the people, it is easy to step on a PR land mine," Bishop said.

While the U.S. Army has no legal repercussions when they disapprove of something that goes into a movie, television show or video game they supported, they can officially withdraw their support.

The problem is that much of this process is front loaded, with the approvals and the help given early on. This late in the game, there is very little the Army can do.

"From a legal stand point we have have no legal authority to make a production company or developer change something," Hawes said. "In this case we provided support based on the original outline."

While Hawes said that the Army withdrawing support for the game after it was completed would have been nothing more than a "statement of disappointment," they still considered it.

"That did come up, withdrawing support," he said. "We never did send a formal letter to Electronic Arts pulling support, that would have been a meaningless document."

Hawes and Electronic Arts' Jeff Brown both say that there was never a formal request by the Army to remove the playable Taliban, but almost exactly a month after the Army saw the game in action and expressed their disappointment, that's what EA did.

In a statement released today, the Medal of Honor developers said they were renaming the Taliban to Opposing Force in the mulitplayer modes of the game out of respect for the friends and families of fallen soldiers.

Hawes said the Army received notice of the change in the game at the beginning of this week.

While Hawes said that the issue hasn't resulted in any change of policy, he did say the miscommunication will "help us in the future."

"We learn from every experience," he said. "We are pleased they changed it from the Taliban, only time will tell if they went far enough."

Call of Duty: Black Ops, Multiplayer Gameplay Trailer

Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer Gameplay Trailer shows us how to Wager ( Black Ops Multiplayer Reveal )

During yesterday’s “Multiplayer Reveal“, Treyarch has detailed, for the first time, the multiplayer side of their upcoming entry in the Call of Duty franchise, and even showed to those attending a Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer Gameplay Trailer.

During the press event, Treyarch has talked about what’s new and improved in the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer:

First, there is a mode called Combat Training specially designed for those who don’t play online. In Combat Training players will square off against bots. This mode will also have a progression system, different from the online mode.

Care Packages will contain new weapons including the Death Machine (a mini-gun) and the Grim Reaper (a grenade launcher).

Kill-streak rewards will include: Mortar Team, Napalm Strike, the Radio Controlled Car, Gunship and SAM Turret.

Call of Duty: Black Ops will also have a new currency system, based on COD Points. The points are earned as you play and can be spent on contracts or gambled in Call of Duty: Black Ops Wager matches. The contracts are, in fact, specialized challenges splitted up in categories like Mercenaries, Operations and Specialist. We can expect each challenge category to have a particular type of gameplay and achievements. Of course there will be a bigger reward for more difficult contracts.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Wager Matches are 4 brand new free-for-all based game-modes that are separate from normal online progression. In the Wager matches players can take their hard earned Currency Points (CP) and gamble it against other players. The thing players will gamble on is that they’ll be in the Top 3 when the match is over. So basically, at the end of a game, only the Top 3 players will cash in on the bet while everyone else losses their wager.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Wager game modes are :
  • One in the Chamber – Every players spawns with a pistol, one bullet and three lives. If you kill another player you get to take their bullet. If you fire and miss, you’ll only have the melee attack at your disposal.
  • Sticks and Stones – In this game-mode the players are equipped with a Crossbow, a Ballistic Knife and a Tomahawk. If you kill another player with the Tomahawk, you’ll bankrupt that player.
  • Gun Game – This Wager game-mode will hand players a progressive series of weapons, based on kills. You start up with a pistol and, with every kill, you progress to the next weapon. The player that gets to the last weapon will win the game but, if somehow you get knifed you’ll be set back one tier.
  • Sharp Shooter – In this 4th Wager mode every player will start with the same randomly selected weapon. After a fixed amount of time everyone will be switched to another randomly selected weapon. In Sharp Shooter, with each kill you’ll earn a perk and eventually a scoring multiplier.
Check out the Call of Duty: Black Ops gameplay trailer that details the Wager game-mode:

Another aspect on which Treyarch touched during the Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer Reveal event is the customization. Everything can be customized, from the Player Emblems (via the Emblem Editor) through the weapon’s color, decals and the targeting reticule. It’s Create-a-Class 2.0 at its best.

Interestingly, nothing has come up about the Call of Duty: Black Ops Beta that many thought it will be released today. I guess those Call of Duty: Black Ops Beta Ads were NOT official after all.

Review: Mafia 2 Games (Xbox 360/ PS3/ PC)

Mafia 2

BADA bring it on! There's a hit out - and it's in the form of Mafia II.

Following on from its 2 million-selling little brother, 2K Czech have taken this latest version to new levels.

So, how is the world of organised crime looking since we last left it?

Mafia 2 Well, you play Vito, the son of a poor immigrant who realises that joining the Mafia is the only way to get out of poverty.

In his quest to become a made man, Vito embarks on a journey of boosting cars, breaking legs and shootouts with Tommy guns.

One noticeable difference in Mafia II is that the storyline and set pieces are a lot darker than before.

The car chases are brilliantly done and the hand-to-hand combat is remarkably improved (something we were disappointed with in the first game). The soundtrack is quirky and the rendering really brings out the grim atmosphere of the Mafia world.

Although the Empire Bay map is a big one (10-square miles) you can't help but feel that the open world could have been expanded more. Red Dead Redemption set the bar stupidly high in this field but we were still hoping that Mafia II would try and stretch itself a little more.

But, that's a harsh criticism of what is a truly sensational game.

You wannabe a wise guy? Well, there's no wiser move than going out and buying this game. 9/10
