Scariest. Recall. Ever: 52,000 Mazda 6s Recalled For...Spider Web Fueled Fires

According to Wikipedia the Yellow Sac Spider ranges from 5-10mm in size and carries a necrotic venom that is dangerous to humans.

According to the NHTSA and Mazda, the Yellow Sac Spider has a thing for crawling into the evaporative canister vent line of 2009-2010 Mazda 6s, getting a web all up in there and potentially causing a restriction of the line. Spider webs force recall of 52,000 Mazdas (CNN)

The itsy-bitsy spider crawled up the fuel system of a Mazda6 sedan and out came the recall.

CNN reports that Mazda is recalling 52,000 of the sedans because yellow sac spider webs in the fuel system.

The critters could increase the risk of fire in the cars. There have been 20 reported cases of spider infestation, but so far, no arachnid-caused fires. ( Read Yellow Sac Spider more... )

Japanese brand caught in web after spiders prompt 50,000 car recall.

Spiders have forced Mazda US to recall more than 50,000 Mazda6 mid-sized sedans.

The Yellow Sac spider reportedly spins it webs inside part of the car's fuel system, which in turn causes increased pressure in the fuel system, causing the car's petrol tank to crack.

The fault was discovered in late 2009, when a dealer reportedly found a spider web inside the fuel system of a Mazda6 when the car's owner brought the vehicle in to be repaired after noticing a fuel leak. ( Read Yellow Sac Spider more... )

Mazda Motor Corp. has an itsy-bitsy problem, and it's recalling 65,000 cars to fix it.

2009-10 MAZDA6 Sedans Recalled Due to… Yellow Sac Spider

A little yellow spider is responsible for the recall of 52,000 year-model 2009-2010 MAZDA6 sedans. According to the car maker, the yellow sac spider “may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause a restriction of the line.” A restriction in the evaporative canister vent line could prevent air from getting into the gas tank, resulting in a crack in the gas tank that could cause a fire.

The “yellow sac spider” (Cheiracanthium Inclusum) probably accounts for more spider bites than any the spider, and are indigenous to much of the United States. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Mazda is recalling about 52,000 Mazda6 sedans in the U.S., because yellow sac spiders like to build their nests in part of the fuel system.

With every pass of Paul Caudill's polishing cloth, the red on his '57 Chevy got a little brighter.

Caudill, a Taylor resident and General Motors retiree, was prepping the four-door automatic for the 59th edition of Detroit's annual homage to all things custom and chrome: the Autorama, which got under way Friday at Cobo Center.

Caudill said he bought the car -- a make and model he favored growing up in Kentucky -- after his wife, Pauline, died of cancer in 2008. He said he used the $5,000 he got from selling Tonka toys the couple had collected over the years to buy it. The couple would have been married 50 years this month. ( Read Autorama Detroit more... )

Anyone Going To Detroit Autorama?

Well,I put in for Friday as a vacation day(seniority does have its advantages) thinking I’d head on down to The D and check out Autorama. Haven’t been there since 1987 or so,and thought it would help with the inspiration factor on cold days-like with the header/steering box project-seeing other nice Mopars and all that. Anyone from the area heading there? What days? Perhaps a hookup may be in order.

I’m seriously thinking Friday,but still might wait until Saturday afternoon to go there. I’m trying to hook up with some old street race hoodlums(really,they are respectable guys…) and see if they’re interested as well. Oh,I will get pics-perhaps some of hot women. Milyard is a newcomer to the prestigious Detroit show. His '62 Corvette is fitted with an LS7 427-inch Corvette engine.

With the sought-after annual Ridler Award at stake, custom car owners and the professionals who create them have brought their work to Cobo Hall here for the 59th Autorama for a showdown.

Billed as Meguiar's Autorama, and presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts, the February 25-27 event features some 1,000 exhibits of cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles from around the country.

In spirit, though, they are the words of Tim Richmond. A fearless driver who became one of the best racers on the NASCAR circuit under the guidance of a crusty crew chief, Richmond was the flamboyant real-life character upon which Cruise’s Trickle was loosely based. But Days of Thunder isn’t Richmond’s story.

Not by a long shot. Richmond was confident, talented and brash, and, appropriately enough, he had a Hollywood icon’s sense of the spotlight, but his life wasn’t blessed with the stereotypical Hollywood ending. Just when Richmond was beginning to show his potential for legendary greatness, he died at the age of 34. What killed him wasn’t overconfidence on the racetrack but ignorance off of it. In 2010 Brian Vickers season ended prematurely due to blood clots in his legs and around his lungs. He only raced in eleven races before his health condition sidelined him for the rest of the year.

The question Fantasy Racers are wondering is, will his extended absence hurt him? The obvious answer to that question is absolutely not. Why would it hurt him?

NASCAR fans will not want to miss ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary – Tim Richmond: ToThe Limit

In the 1980s, U.S. racing car driver Tim Richmond lived his life the way he raced cars – wide open. Born into a wealthy family, Tim Richmond was the antithesis of the typical Southern, blue-collar, dirt-track racers who dominated NASCAR. Nicknamed “Hollywood”, he was a flamboyant showman who basked in the attention of the media and fans, especially the attention of female admirers.

But it was Richmond’s on-track performances that ended up drawing comparisons to racing legends and in 1986, when he won seven NASCAR races and finished third in the Winston Cup series points race, some believed he was on the verge of stardom. When he unexpectedly withdrew from the season-opening Daytona 500 in February 1987, media reported that he had pneumonia. In reality, the diagnosis was far more dire: he had AIDS. Richmond returned to the track in 1987, but he was gone from the sport by the next year as his health deteriorated. He spent his final days as a recluse, dying on August 13, 1989, at the age of 34. Mike Rogers has no trouble remembering when he became a fan of NASCAR racing.

The year was 1979, the race was the Daytona 500 — the first televised live in its entirety — and it ended with leaders Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough wrecking on the final lap and then fighting over it.

“That’s what got me hooked,” Rogers said. “That got me hooked stupid.”

The Gaytona 500

Montreal stock-car racing legend Dick Foley was not just the first Canadian to race in the Daytona 500, back in 1959, but Foley also inadvertently caused the biggest pile-up in NASCAR history at Daytona Speedway the following year.

After losing, then regaining, control of his Chevy Impala - the words "Montreal, Canada" painted on his fenders - Foley spun out into the infield. Danica Patrick Leads Lap, Makes History At Daytona

Danica Patrick did something on Saturday that no other woman has ever done in history.

On lap 30 of the Drive4COPD 300 at Daytona, Danica Patrick crossed the start/finish line in first place, with the help of Clint Bowyer. In doing so, she became the first woman to ever lead a lap in NASCAR-sanctioned competition at Daytona.

Patrick would only lead the one lap, and being unable to fully figure out the two-car tango quickly caused her to fall deep in the lead pack and eventually off the lead lap. ( Read Danica Patrick more... )

Danica Patrick Scores Career-Best NASCAR Finish In Daytona Nationwide Race

Danica Patrick recorded her career-best finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series on Saturday at Daytona International Raceway, finishing 14th and leading a lap under green.

Here are some of her comments after the race:

On the race and using the two-car draft:

It was pretty fun. ... It was really about pushing each other. I pushed a little bit at the end – a little too late. It was really cool when Clint (Bowyer) was pushing me, and they told me I led a lap, at least, so that was really cool. But that just showed me (the two-car draft) is what you gotta do and that's what they did up front all day.

On why she didn't push more often in the draft:

I tried to push at the very, very beginning on the start. And it didn't really work. Like I kind of kept bouncing off of them. ... At the end there when it was the most chaotic, I was OK to push. You can't really see, though. So that's the problem, and it was the worst time to try it, really. ( Read Danica Patrick more... )

Nationwide Insurance Adds Danica Patrick to You and Me Both Junior Team

Move over ‘You and Me Both Junior’ as there is a new girl on the team. Nationwide Insurance announced today that Danica Patrick, driver of the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet Impala for JR Motorsports, will join her boss and the Earnhardt family as part of the Nationwide promotion team.

Patrick, who is also a Nationwide customer as are Dale Jr. and his sister Kelley Earnhardt, met with the media at Daytona International Speedway to announce the new partnership.

Predictions: Danica Patrick and Travis Pastrana racing in NASCAR in 2011?

Welcome readers, as the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series season is on the horizon, today in part-three of my prediction series, I’m discussing two well known Motorsports drivers that have decided to embark on NASCAR in the next stage of their racing careers, namely Danica Patrick and Travis Pastrana.

1. Danica Patrick. Now I realize and understand that there are a lot of NASCAR fans that don’t care for Danica Patrick being in NASCAR and driving for a well known ride namely at JR Motorsports. Nor care for her switching between the IRL IndyCar Series and NASCAR like she is.

But for me, a motorsports fan that has watched Danica Patrick since her day’s in the Toyota Atlantics Series and while I do believe that Patrick should be picking a series and run full-time in it whether it’s the IRL IndyCar Series or NASCAR so she can succeed in it, she did learn a few thing in 2010 as she had a few good runs and made headlines everywhere she went in NASCAR especially when she taught a driver at Phoenix that art of a simple payback pass. Danica Patrick briefly leads Nationwide race, finishes NASCAR career-high 14th

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — For a few laps, at least, Danica Patrick's day was going better than most people imagined: She was racing for the lead at Daytona International Speedway.

Patrick briefly led Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide race at Daytona, but she couldn't stay there. Still relatively inexperienced in stock car racing, Patrick struggled when it was her turn to be the pushing car in the two-car style of drafting that has dominated Daytona Speedweeks.

Unable to consistently team up with a drafting partner, she faded in the middle of the race and finished 14th — the best finish of the IndyCar series regular's brief Nationwide career.

"I pushed a little bit at the end, a little too late," Patrick said. "But it was really cool when Clint (Bowyer) was pushing me and they told me that I did lead a lap, at least. That was really cool. Danica Patrick starts fourth after career-best qualifying effort

Against formidable competition, Patrick qualified fourth for Saturday’s Drive4COPD 300 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway. That’s one spot better than she ran during time trials for the Nationwide season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Patrick finished 19th in the Homestead race, posting the first top-20 of her NASCAR career. At Daytona, she’ll take the green flag at approximately 1:32 p.m. with her sights firmly fixed on the top 10.

Stewart takes narrow Daytona Nationwide win, Danica Patrick finishes lap down

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart wins by a hair, while Dale Jr. can't seem to get his pit right at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, helped by a push from Landon Cassill, zoomed past Clint Bowyer to win the Drive4COPD 300. The win was Stewart’s fourth consecutive Nationwide Series win at Daytona International Speedway.

Smoke had only a fraction of a second to spare, with 0.007 seconds between his car and the second-place Bowyer. Cassill finished third while Dale Earnhardt Jr. crossed the line in fourth. Earnhardt Jr. had pushed Bowyer for six laps after a restart on lap 115. ( Read Danica Patrick more... )

Desert Car Kings Debuts Tonight; Filming Takes Place in Phoenix This Weekend


The Arizona-based reality show Desert Car Kings debuts tonight on the Discovery Channel. Soon thereafter, you can be in the spotlight when cameras roll in north Phoenix.

As was previously reported, the McClure family, who own Desert Valley Auto Parts, will be the main characters in Desert Car Kings. The cable television series, which premiers tonight at 11 p.m. local time, follows the family as they scour junkyards, backyards, and random sites for classical autos and rare car parts.

On Saturday, a Discovery Channel camera crew will be filming at the Five Star Auto Auction, 22454 North 21st Avenue, when more than 250 rides, including a 1968 Dodge Charger and a 1950 Cadillac, are sold to dealers during the open-to-the-public event. 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Volkswagen is using “The Oprah Winfrey Show” as a launching pad for its redesigned Beetle even though the car’s on-sale date is a year away. The talk-show host showed a silhouette of its 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, and then announced she would give a new Beetle to each member of the studio audience.

Winfrey, who owns a Beetle, reached out to Volkswagen, telling executives the car is one of her “favorite things,” Jonathan Browning, president of Volkswagen of America, said.

This new Beetle still has the design lines that made it an all-time classic but it is now built with a sportier design that comes with features such as ambient light, Bluetooth and navigation.

According to Volkswagen, the taxes and fees for the car will be all paid for the company. This was an issue back in 2004, when Oprah gave a Pontiac G6 car to her audience, but many of them had to decline the gift because of the high amount of taxes.

Way to go Oprah! These, at least, are real gifts.

Toyota Corolla Recall Affects Other Models

Toyota Motor Corp. says it will recall about 1.1 million Corolla and Matrix models from the 2005 to 2008 model years to fix certain engine control modules, or ECMs, that may be defective. This marks the latest in a wave of recalls Toyota and its Lexus luxury division have conducted this year.

General Motors Corp. says the recall includes 199,163 Pontiac Vibe models from the same model years. The Vibe and Matrix are sister vehicles built between April 2004 and January 2008 at the former New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., or Nummi, joint venture between GM and Toyota.

Toyota says in two-wheel-drive versions of the vehicles with the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine known as the 1ZZ-FE, there is a chance a crack may develop at certain soldered points or on the ECM’s circuit board. In most cases the check-engine light comes on if cracks occur. The transmission may shift harshly and the engine may not start. In some cases the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven.

Toyota says there are three “unconfirmed accidents alleged to be related to this condition,” one of which reportedly involved a minor injury. GM says it knows of no accidents involving Vibes.

Toyota says it will replace the ECMs on affected vehicles at no charge to the owner. Beginning in mid-September the company will notify owners of this recall and advise them on getting their cars repaired. The notification letters will include information about reimbursement for owners who previously paid for an ECM replacement related to this problem. Since GM has wound down the Pontiac brand, owners will have to take their cars to other GM dealerships for service.

TOKYO — Believe it or not, the R35 Nissan GT-R has been around for nearly 3 years. Accordingly, a refresh is in the works, and this week photos of what will be the face-lifted 2012 Nissan GT-R leaked onto the Web, with GTRBlog the first to pick up the story.

Immediately obvious are the trendy LED marker lights up front, along with minor massaging of the front airdam. The wheel design is new, and of course, the forged-aluminum Rays 20s promise to be both lighter and stronger. Around back, the diffuser has been modified to increase downforce, and an LED unit has been added.

The photo shows what are apparently two new exterior colors for the 2012 GT-R. The blue is an entirely new paint code for the GT-R; the rumored name is Aurora Flare Blue Pearl. The black paint is thought to be a revised mix of the existing Black Obsidian option.

Nissan officials tell Inside Line that the 2012 Nissan GT-R's twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 will also make more horsepower. They haven't said how much, but remember that the 2011 model already makes 485 hp, so the magic 500 is a good bet. We've also been told to expect revised engine and transmission mounts.

Inside Line has also confirmed that the 2012 GT-R will incorporate significant suspension changes, which the NAGTROC forum has detailed. The front strut towers have been reinforced to improve front-end rigidity. The front and rear suspension geometry has been altered as well. The front suspension has a different leverage ratio and more caster, while the rear suspension has a tweaked roll center. A new shock absorber design provides better response through improved oil flow, and the spring and damper rates are all new.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that that there's now a driver-selectable rear-wheel-drive mode for the otherwise all-wheel-drive GT-R. And, of course, it's predicted that Nissan will equip it with yet another version of launch control.

The most believable bit of speculation is that Nissan will use the refresh as an opportunity to apply another price increase to its low-volume sports car.

Shanghai-Volkswagen La vida

The Volkswagen Lavida is a compact car released by Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive for the Chinese market.

The Lavida, manufactured by Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive, is based on Volkswagen Group PQ34 platform and components which is shared with the Golf Mk4.

The new sedan developed by Shanghai Volkswagen was debuted at Auto China 2008 in Beijing, with two engine options a 1.6L and a 2.0L.

Shanghai-Volkswagen has introduced Lavida 1.4 TSI at Auto Shanghai 2009, which shares engine with FAW-VW Sagitar TSI. Also CSVW has showed a Bluemotion Concept Version of Lavida, but there is no plan to produce this car.

In 2010 Shanghai-VW unveils e-Lavida concept car at Auto China 2010, which is a part of VW's worldwide EV strategy.
