Hot rides catch eyes at Autorama in Detroit

One car at Detroit Autorama really turning heads: The Detroit Autorama is in full swing at Cobo Center. The show this year features nearly 800 vehicles. One of them is Jesus Ortega's 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo that you have to see to believe. Video shot and edited by MIKE BROOKBANK/DFP DIGITAL HOST

With every pass of Paul Caudill's polishing cloth, the red on his '57 Chevy got a little brighter.

Caudill, a Taylor resident and General Motors retiree, was prepping the four-door automatic for the 59th edition of Detroit's annual homage to all things custom and chrome: the Autorama, which got under way Friday at Cobo Center.

Caudill said he bought the car -- a make and model he favored growing up in Kentucky -- after his wife, Pauline, died of cancer in 2008. He said he used the $5,000 he got from selling Tonka toys the couple had collected over the years to buy it. The couple would have been married 50 years this month. ( Read Autorama Detroit more... )

2011 Detroit Autorama – I’m Psychic

Join hands now as we call upon the spirits of past Ridler Award winners to psychic-ly or maybe psychotic-ly choose the big winner for the 2011 Detroit Autorama.

Hear me now great and all knowing Chip Foose, here me wise-one, Mr. Troy Trepanier… are you there? Is that you Tammy Ray? Help me Obi-Wan Don Ridler!

I see a Ford. It’s AMAZING! It even has a Ford engine in it… an original 427 SOC “Cammer” motor at that. Thus the name, “Suncammer”. On top of a one-off cast intake manifold sit equally rare Autolite inline four barrel carbs. Fantastic!! ( Read Autorama Detroit more... )

Anyone Going To Detroit Autorama?

Well,I put in for Friday as a vacation day(seniority does have its advantages) thinking I’d head on down to The D and check out Autorama. Haven’t been there since 1987 or so,and thought it would help with the inspiration factor on cold days-like with the header/steering box project-seeing other nice Mopars and all that. Anyone from the area heading there? What days? Perhaps a hookup may be in order.

I’m seriously thinking Friday, but still might wait until Saturday afternoon to go there. I’m trying to hook up with some old street race hoodlums(really, they are respectable guys…) and see if they’re interested as well. Oh,I will get pics-perhaps some of hot women. Custom cars attract the best to Detroit's Autorama

With a special fondness for the 1962 Corvette, Bruce Milyard of Grand Junction, Colo. worked closely with builder John Martin of Alamosa Colo. to create this Ridler Award contenderatr the 2011 Autorama. Milyard is a newcomer to the prestigious Detroit show. His '62 Corvette is fitted with an LS7 427-inch Corvette engine.

With the sought-after annual Ridler Award at stake, custom car owners and the professionals who create them have brought their work to Cobo Hall here for the 59th Autorama for a showdown.

Billed as Meguiar's Autorama, and presented by O'Reilly Auto Parts, the February 25-27 event features some 1,000 exhibits of cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles from around the country.

The Ridler Award is unique to the Detroit expo and attracts custom one-of-a-kind vehicles that have never been shown publicly nor featured in the media.

"We submitted photos of our car as it was being worked on plus an artist's rendering for consideration," said Bruce Ricks of Sapulpa, Okla. ( Read Autorama Detroit more... )
