No Apps, No Sale: iPad 2 Vs. Motorola Xoom Vs. RIM Playbook Vs. HP TouchPad

So, now that I’ve seen the iPad 2, see my short video above, or go and watch all the videos over on Apple’s website or view the pages of content poured into blogs over on Techmeme.

We now know what the choice is:

1. Apple iPad 2. Has apps.
2. Motorola Xoom. Has no apps.
3. HP TouchPad. Has no apps.
4. RIM PlayBook. Has no apps.

No apps, no sale.

It really is that simple. ( Read iPad 2 vs Xoom more... )

Tale of the Tape: iPad 2 vs Xoom vs PlayBook vs TouchPad

Apple just announced the iPad 2, and it adds some sweet features, including a fast dual-core processor and dual cameras. You also get a considerably thinner and lighter design.

But how does this much-anticipated tablet stack up to other high-profile slates? For your spec-comparing pleasure, we’ve pitted what we know about the iPad 2 against three other top tablets that are already available or coming to market soon: the BlackBerry PlayBook, the HP TouchPad, and the Motorola Xoom. Let’s get it on! ( Read iPad 2 vs Xoom more... )

iPad 2 vs. Motorola Xoom vs. HP TouchPad vs. BlackBerry PlayBook: the tale of the tape

You might recall we ran this comparison about a month back when HP's TouchPad was announced, but now we're back with a full set of 2011 devices as Apple's brand new iPad 2 has joined the fray. There's no need for excessive introductions, really, just leap past the break to get swalloped up by an avalanche of next-generation tablet specs. ( Read iPad 2 vs Xoom more... )

New iPad 2 vs Motorola Xoom: Apple Comes Blazing Back

Earlier this week we pitted the original iPad to the Motorola Xoom, however now that the new iPad 2 has been officially unveiled with specs in tow, we're going to be able to put both 2011 models up against each other, leveling the playing field so to speak. So lets get to it.( Read iPad 2 vs Xoom more... )

iPad vs. Xoom vs. iPad 2 Spec Comparison Chart [UPDATE]

Apple’s much anticipated iPad 2 was announced Wednesday, and we were interested in comparing the specs to both the original iPad and Motorola’s recently announced Xoom Android tablet.

As you can see below, both the iPad 2 and the Xoom each have a few specs in their favor, but the iPad 2 is clearly the best when it comes to size, weight, price, and battery life. Apple’s iPad 2 also has the benefit of LED backlighting, which for many will be enough to overcome the Xoom’s higher resolution (see below) in terms of picture quality).

iPad also has both higher and lower storage options, making the device more flexible in terms of both usage and pricing. ( Read iPad 2 vs Xoom more... )

Tablet Tumble: iPad 2 vs. Motorola Xoom

The success of Apple's iPad tablet last year sent its competitors scrambling to come up with similar products, including the BlackBerry PlayBook, the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

But despite all these new entries into the tablet market, Apple remains the definitive standard for what a tablet computer should be as evidenced by the release of its iPad 2 today.

(See: "Jobs unveils sleeker, more powerful iPad 2 at same price".) The launch of the iPad 2 not only took some of the buzz away from Motorola's just-released Android-based Xoom tablet, but it also served notice to the rest of the industry that Apple wouldn't be resting on its laurels anytime soon. In this article we'll take a look at how the iPad 2 stacks up against the Motorola Xoom when it comes to hardware, operating systems, connectivity options and pricing. iPad 2
Why the iPad 2 Display Didn't Get an Upgrade

In the lead-up to the iPad 2 announcement, many were predicting that Apple would give the tablet's 9.7-inch screen a bump in resolution. But when Steve Jobs revealed the second-generation iPad to the world, it had the same pixel count as the first one: 1,024x768, even though the display was revamped to be considerably thinner. Why no extra pixels?

Looking at the history of the display on the iPhone offers some clues. Apple kept the display of the iPhone at the same 480x320-pixel resolution for the first three versions of the phone, and when it finally upgraded the display for the iPhone 4, the bump was huge, doubling the display resolution to 960x640 pixels. The upgrade also introduced the term "retina display," a piece of marketing jargon that Apple doesn't quantify, but generally means a display that is better than the limits of human vision. Apple’s iPad 2 to debut with dual-core chip, new specs

It’s official. Apple has dropped the iPad 2 in all its black or white glory, available to the public March 11, 2011 (nine days!).

“Thinner. Lighter. Faster. FaceTime. Smart Covers. Ten-hour battery.”

That’s Apple’s slogan, and that pretty much wraps up what you may have missed at the press conference Wednesday. But there is a lot more to this tablet than meets the eye. The iPad 2 will be running a 1GHz dual-core A5 chip, which will allow it to run at lightning speeds with graphics up to nine times better than the original. ( Read iPad 2 Specs more... )

Spec Showdown: iPad 2 vs. Its Rivals

How does Apple’s new tablet compare with the Motorola Xoom, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the HP TouchPad and the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook? Our chart breaks down the specifics.

Judged on specs alone, the Apple iPad 2 doesn't do much more than keep pace with its tablet rivals.

It's a bit thinner that its major rivals--the Motorola Xoom, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the HP TouchPad, and the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook--and it's lighter than most. But its processor appears to be on a par with those of other tablets, and its cameras' resolutions seem to be lower. ( Read iPad 2 Specs more... )

Apple iPad Smart Cover: A New Kind of Case

At today's Apple event, where the world was first introduced to the iPad 2, one thing stood out to me above everything else. Many of the new features and specs had been leaked, or correctly guessed, months ago, but no one knew that Apple would pour its innovative energies into a case for the new device. But they did, and the new Smart Cover might be the best case I've ever seen for a mobile device. ( Read iPad 2 Specs more... )

Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover Video – In Action

As you may already know by now, today marked the Apple iPad 2 event. At the event Steve Jobs took the stage to announce that the iPad 2 will start shipping March 11th. The official announcement and unveil meant the iPad 2 features were seen for the first time and one of the most innovative is its new cover that they call the Smart Cover.

As Alan Ng reports in his article the cover can only be described as a ‘flap’ but it is much more. Made from either polyurethane or leather depending on which you prefer both these covers will clean your iPad 2 automatically using its microfibers. ( Read iPad 2 Specs more... )

Our Take: Apple’s iPad 2 Announcement

This morning’s Apple press event has come and gone, and as you likely have noticed, we covered just about every aspect of it. The iPad 2 itself, the new features and apps coming with iOS 4.3, the 100m and 15m iPhone and iPad sales numbers, even the new device’s funky magnetic case.

That said, the announcement was conspicuous for its lack of truly major announcements. Rumors have been flying left and right about potential new features, but virtually none actually manifested. ( Read iPad 2 Announcement more... )

Apple Offers New Cover for iPad 2 That Solves the Finger Print Issue

One of the big bits of news coming out of the iPad 2 announcement has nothing to do with hardware or software but with an accessory. Apple has addressed two of my biggest complaints about its pretty devices with a new case/cover. Those two complaints have been a small legend around these pages.

The first is why go to all that trouble to design a beautiful device if it is going to be covered up with a case. The second, well that’s called finger print smudges. We all know what they are and quite honestly, Apple seems to be the only hardware maker that cares about this. ( Read iPad 2 Announcement more... )

iPad 2 Announcement

The cameras were ready. The bloggers were seated. The rumor mill finally fell silent. Moments ago we had Apple's long awaited announcement of the iPad 2.

Steve Jobs began by really surveying the success of the iPad over the last year, calling it the"post-PC device." This included discussing how it was being used in Chicago schools, the ability for an autistic youth to get their hands on it and have it change their life, and playing out a video with images designed to pull at the tear strings of the onlookers.

Then it was time to look forward: the iPad 2 announcement. ( Read iPad 2 Announcement more... )

Random House Titles Hit iBooks Shelves Ahead of iPad 2 Announcement

Just ahead of Apple’s upcoming iPad 2 announcement, Random House has begun populating the iBooks Store with such titles as Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. The news comes just after the larger publisher announced it had agreed to the Cupertino, Calif. company’s “agency model” for pricing e-books sold to iPad and iPhone owners.

Earlier this week, Random House said it had adopted Apple’s pricing method for e-books partially at the request of book stores hoping to sell more electronic books to support lagging sales of physical titles. The tech giant has required publishers to adopt the “agency model,” where booksellers receive a 30 percent cut. Some publishers had objected, instead preferring Amazon’s tactic of selling e-books at a loss, hoping the increased demand for electronic reading material would boost its Kindle e-reader. Apple’s iPad 2 Announcement

It’s that time again. Apple is holding an event, throwing Silicon Valley into a tizzy of speculation.

This time around, the tech giant is expected to unveil a new iPad tablet. The new model already is in production, The Wall Street Journal reported; it’s lighter and thinner, with at least one camera. Apple watchers aren’t expecting revolutionary changes, and it remains to be seen how Apple will sustain buzz for the new product. iPad 2 announcement: The book news

Apple made its iPad 2 announcement at a packed press event in San Francisco on Wednesday morning. The big news for books? First: 100 million e-books have been sold through the iBookstore since its April 2010 launch. Second: 17,000 Random House titles will now be available in the iBookstore.

The other big news? Steve Jobs was there and ran the presentation as always, wearing his classic black turtleneck. There had been speculation that Jobs would not participate in the launch event; in January, the longtime Apple chief executive took a medical leave from the company. The iPad 2′s killer feature? Availability – on sale March 11

So the iPad 2 debuted today and it has a killer feature. It’s not the A5 dual-core CPU or the even thinner and lighter body. Rather it’s something far simpler yet out-of-reach for it’s would-be competitors: availability.

Will it reach us in weeks or months? No, the iPad 2 will be out next week, March 11th. That’s U.S. Other countries will follow on March 25th and everyone else shortly thereafter. With iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 release, Steve Jobs finally retakes Apple today

Ahead of today’s debut of the iPad 2 and iOS 4.3, one thing is clear: there’s nothing Steve Jobs likes less than when the focus is on him in a way that doesn’t relate to his products. He’s always been happy to take centerstage and show off Apple’s latest wares, but on top of his ongoing struggles with his health, Jobs must be significantly bothered by the fact that questions surrounding his health have largely overshadowed everything else Apple has done thus far in 2011. Part of that is mere well-wishing on the part of the public.

Another part of it is a lack of respect for the man’s privacy. And yet another part is the fact that Apple hasn’t really done anything this year, making it all too tempting for onlookers to shift their Apple-related attention back to Jobs’ health instead of Apple’s products. Apple iOS 4.3 Released at iPad 2 Event

Scott Forstall stood on stage after Steve Jobs introduced the first official look at the iPad 2 as we sat in the audience and looked upon the new icon with a gigantic 4.3 emblazoned upon it. This is definitely been in the cannon for a little while, its release being timed perfectly with the release of iPad 2. Safari performance has been improved with the Nitro JavaScript engine (exciting!) iTunes home sharing is introduced, allowing you to get all of your content directly over a Wifi connection.

AirPlay has been improved, with a single tap on the AirPlay icon popping up a window that shows your Apple TV if it’s in range (or whichever other device will play nice with it, we suppose!) ( Read iPad 2 Announcement more... )

Pad 2 brings release of iOS 4.3, with FaceTime and Photo Booth

iOS 4.3 features performance improvements in Safari, thanks to the addition of the Nitro JavaScript engine. It also brings iTunes home sharing, which lets the iPad 2 play content over Wi-Fi from your other networked devices. Oh, and 4.3 also (finally!) lets you decide whether the switch on your iPad is a mute button or an orientation lock. ( Read iPad 2 Announcement more... )

HP 6910P, HP Compaq 6910P
HP Compaq 6910p Review

Pros

  • Solid build, light enough to easily carry, pleasing design though nothing flashy
  • Excellent wireless connectivity options
  • Great performance with Intel Santa Rosa platform
  • Reasonable price
  • Generous 3-year warranty

Cons

  • Can't configure online to your precise liking

  • Touch sensitive buttons are not very responsive
  • No good dedicated graphics options available to support DX10

HP Compaq 6910p Full Review

The 14.1" HP Compaq 6910p is one of the latest professional line portable business notebooks currently being offered by HP. The 6910p is much like the smaller 12.1" screen HP 2510p we recently reviewed in terms of looks, but of course this larger notebook packs more power. The 6910p starts at a reasonable price of $1,199 with a basic configuration that includes the Intel Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) processor.

The 6910p is squarely in the business notebook category, this means there is no sacrifice made when it comes to security and communications features you'd want to have as a business person. Our review model has integrated Verizon EV-DO and you can get 802.11n for faster wireless. There's a fingerprint reader for biometric security and it offers a TPM integrated security chip. The 6910p, being a business notebook, is designed so that it can share a common image with other HP notebooks if an IT department is standardizing on this brand. Furthermore, it offers Intel Centrino Pro so IT managers can remotely do such things as security updates to users machines.

The configuration of our review machine is as follows:

HP Compaq 6910p specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.00GHz
  • OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Business
  • Hard Drive: 120 GB SATA @ 5400RPM
  • Screen: 14.1" WXGA Widescreen (1280 x 800) (WXGA+ option available)
  • Graphics: Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics
  • RAM: 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2 x 1GB)
  • Optical Drive: DVD SuperMulti drive (DVD+/-RW) w/Double Layer Support
  • Battery: 6-cell lithium ion, 55WHr
  • Wireless: Intel PRO / Wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n
  • Optional WWAN: Integrated HP ev2200 1xEV-DO Wireless Module
  • Security: Fingerprint reader, TPM hardware-based encryption
  • Weight: 5.2 lbs
  • Dimensions: 13" (Width) x 9.4" (Depth) x 1.1" (Height)
  • Ports/Slots: docking connector; 1 IEEE 1394 (FireWire); 3 Universal Serial Bus (USB 2.0); VGA monitor out; S-video out; RJ-45 Ethernet LAN; RJ-11 modem; Type I/II PC Card Slot; SmartCard; SD card reader; headphone/speaker jack; microphone
  • Warranty: 3 year parts and labor

Looks

The 6910p is all business in its looks using only dark gray and black colors. It's a clean and boxy look. To keep the look clean HP even goes so far as to make the media buttons touch sensitive instead of regular push button style. While the touch sensitive buttons look nice and the lights on them are pretty, I personally prefer the protruding buttons as it's generally more user friendly to be able to "feel" a button. Thankfully the touch sensitive buttons do not beep loudly when touched like the old HP dv6000 series did, that wouldn't go over well in a business environment.

Design and Build

The overall build quality of the HP 6910p is very good. A latch is used to hold the screen down when stowed, I really like the rubber gripped latch opener because it's easy to feel and find without looking down at the notebook and easy to operate. There's no fiddling to open the screen. The screen has rubber stoppers around it to prevent the screen from slamming into the keyboard when you close it.

The lid of the notebook is constructed of a firm mag-alloy material and will endure the bumps of the road. When the back of the lid is pushed on no screen ripples appear, indicating that the protection is quite adequate. The same mag alloy material is used on the palm rests area which makes sure this area is sturdy and doesn't sink under the weight of your hands. The keyboard is also firm with absolutely no mushiness or sink to it.

One knock is that HP included a plastic dummy insert for the the PCMCIA slot, a flap is preferable as those inserts are tricky and tend to get lost eventually.

The hard drive is shock mounted for protection and also has an accelerometer built-in. The HP 3D DriveGuard software uses the accelerometer to track for sudden movements or detect an abnormal orientation -- such as when the notebook is being carried. If the 3D DriveGuard software detects such movements it will park the hard drive read/write head so as to protect data stored on the platter. The entire bottom of the laptop is as sturdy as the lid with little flex to it, so your protection there should be good.

HP Touchpad
HP TouchPad with WebOS 3.0 unveiled

9.7-inch XGA capacitive display and dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon CPU

HP Palm has officially introduced the new TouchPad tablet running HP webOS 3.0 at the Think Beyond event in San Francisco, US. Flaunting 9.7-inch display XGA capacitive display, the TouchPad supports same resolution as that of Apple iPad display 1024x768. Under the hood, HP TouchPad houses a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and offers 16GB or 32GB storage options. HP also showed off Palm s webOS 3.0 which is now called as HP webOS.

HP Palm s Topaz tablet was already teased and much talked about amongst those who had crude details and rumor mongers. Two noteworthy points are that the company no longer puts Palm s name in this new product neither in brand name nor with the webOS version. Honestly, that should be least of our concerns. HP TouchPad Photos

HP has aggressive plans for the TouchPad, but a generic name, late timing and lack of apps could foil the would-be iPad challenger.

We enter 2011 with the iPad so incredibly dominant that is seems impossible at this point that any product could challenge it. Samsung tried with the Galaxy Tab, and while it got stores to order 2 million of them, the number actually sold appears to be closer to 250,000, and a massive number of people returned the product. On the other hand, even at 15 million units, this market is still relatively small beside the 300-million-unit PC market, or the over-1-billion-unit cell phone market. This suggests that a competitor could emerge, and even if it doesn’t take customers from Apple, could grow in places Apple isn’t as strong. This is the strategy that Dell, for instance, is following with its Windows-7-based tablet, due out later this year. ( Read HP Touchpad more... )

Sorry, But HP's TouchPad Is No Threat To Apple's iPad

HP unveiled its iPad clone, the TouchPad today.

While the TouchPad is not a complete disaster -- it looks pretty nice, and seems to have good software -- it is NOT a significant threat to Apple's iPad.

We still expect Apple to dominate the tablet market for years to come. ( Read HP Touchpad more... )

Amazon Announces Kindle App for HP Touchpad

Amazon has announced that it plans to launch a free Kindle app designed specifically for HP’s forthcoming, webOS-based TouchPad, which was unveiled at a press event Wednesday.

Both the TouchPad and the app are scheduled to debut this summer, though neither Amazon nor HP have named a specific date.

The apps will allow users to purchase and read Kindle books on both kinds of tablets, automatically syncing with apps on their other devices, including desktops (Mac, PC and web), smartphones (iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows 7), iPod touches and iPads. It’s all part of Amazon’s strategy to make the Kindle Store available on as many devices as possible. ( Read HP Touchpad more... )

We just got our hands on that dual-core Palm webOS tablet here in San Francisco, and it's a beaut, with a slim black profile that highlights the brilliant 9.7-inch screen. Sprint is expected to launch a dual-touchscreen smartphone made by Kyocera later today, pairing two 3.5-inch touchscreens and running Android. According to the WSJ, the Sprint Kyocera Echo has what’s described as a “pivot hinge” – presumably a double-hinged arrangement – which allows one screen to fold back against the other out of the way. We’re imagining something similar to Fujitsu’s prototype, shown here. ( Read Kyocera Echo more... )

Kyocera Echo leaks on Sprint's site

We still don't know whether this'll be the "industry first" shown off at Sprint's event later today, but in light of the WSJ's information, we certainly wouldn't be surprised. A quick check of Sprint's site currently shows a hit for the Kyocera Echo, described as "the first dual-touchscreen smartphone" that offers a "pivot hinge" design with a maximum of 4.7 inches of combined screen real estate while still being "pocket-friendly." No other details are offered -- and the link to the Echo product page is dead right now -- but it's an interesting tidbit nonetheless. ( Read Kyocera Echo more... )

Hands-on With the EFUN Nextbook Next3 Tablet

Last week at CES we saw a lot of tablets and I met with a lot of tablet makers. I was fascinated by the differing philosophies among these companies. While some preferred to wait and release their tablets when Google finally released Honeycomb, others were looking to get to market faster and were just fine with sending tablets bearing Android 2.2 or even 2.1 into the world. One such company representing the second stance was EFUN, makers of the Nextbook tablets.

The Nextbook Next3, which recently arrived in our offices, resembles a lot of the Android tablets we’ve seen in the past 18 months or so since this recent slate craze began. What sets it apart is its size — 8.4-inches instead of the more popular 7 or 10-ish — but otherwise the plastic chassis and the resistive screen are all too familiar. At $299 it’s certainly less expensive than the iPads and Galaxy Tabs of the world (unsubsidized, anyway), but is it worth a look ? ( Read Nextbook 8.4 more... )

Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK preview goes live

Android 3.0 Honeycomb SDK

It's still going to be a little bit before you can get your hands on a Xoom, but if you'd like to start playing with the Honeycomb SDK right now -- and hey, developers, we'd encourage you to do just that -- Google's now made it possible. A version of the Android 3.0 SDK billed as a "preview" is now available for download, featuring "non-final" APIs and system images that will help would-be Android tablet devs get their feet wet as they prepare for an inevitable onslaught of these things over the next few months. So go on, get it while the gettin's good.

Among the more delicious promises from Google are tablet-specific UI elements like "richer" widgets and notifications, a built-in GL renderer that permits GPU acceleration of both 2D and 3D visuals, and support for multicore processor architectures. Yay for making the most out of the available hardware.

Android 3.0 Running (Poorly) On Nook Color

Android 3.0

Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) just recently got its first SDK release, and it looks like the enterprising hackers in the Android community have already ported it to the Nook Color hardware. Well, partially. It’s a “zombie” made by mixing the SDK with the Nook’s kernel, and it runs like a dog. Getting hardware acceleration (a major part of the UI snappiness in Honeycomb) working is the next step, and hacker dhoshman over at XDA says he’ll be working on that over the weekend. We’ll keep you updated.

Exclusive: future LG Android phone for Verizon sports LTE

Monday, 25 October 2010

LG AndroidWe were just handed this image with very little detail other than the fact that we're looking at "a future LG high end Android phone for Verizon," but we can deduce a few things: one, and perhaps most notably, you can just barely make out an LTE logo toward the bottom of the back.

That likely makes this one of the six-odd LTE phones Verizon has publicly said are slated for the first half of next year. Secondly, it's got an HD camera of some sort -- probably indicating either 720p or 1080p capture -- and finally, it appears to have a huge, mirrored display and possibly a front-facing cam in the upper right. Looks like there's also a WiFi logo on back (of course), but can anyone make out the other two logos there? And more importantly, can anyone wait for this to launch?

Update: It's been proposed that one of the logos might be for DLNA, since LG's a major DLNA player -- most recently with its PlayTo service on Windows Phone 7.

HTC Knight surfaces for Sprint with Android and a sliding hinge of some sort?

HTC Knight
What do we know about the picture above? Not much more than meets the eye -- this alleged HTC Knight is for Sprint and navigates Android using capacitive touchscreen keys. We do get a little more detail from the source of the image, who gave XDA-developers an XML file that mentions users should not "slide screen in/out" during activation. That certainly suggests that we're looking at a slider, but not necessarily a physical QWERTY keyboard -- after all, a very similar-looking HTC device recently appeared sporting a slide-out speaker bar.

Xbox Kinect's game launch lineup revealed

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

Seventeen Kinect
Seventeen Kinect-enabled games will be available when the device makes its debut next month.

Microsoft has just announced the 17 games that will be available on launch day with Kinect for Xbox 360, the tech giant's highly anticipated controller-free gaming system.

Kinect, which launches on November 4, is Microsoft's answer to the Nintendo Wii's motion controllers, which helped turn that console into one of this generation's most popular gaming devices.

Both Sony and Microsoft have been playing catch-up with the PlayStation Move and Kinect, respectively.

Seventeen Kinect-enabled games will be available when the device makes its debut next month. Here's the full list:

Kinect Adventures: This is the game that is included with every Kinect device. It helps introduce gamers to the Kinect interface, letting them transverse the rapids, float around in space and challenge their friends to races, among other minigames.

Kinectimals: Think Nintendogs, but with no controller.

Game Party: In Motion: This includes a collection of party minigames like Darts.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1 The Videogame: You can now control Harry's magic with your hands.

Your Shape: Fitness Evolved: A fitness game from Ubisoft that is similar to Wii Fit.

Dance Central: This game, made by the creators of Rock Band, tracks your dance moves. We've heard good things about this one.

The Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout: A game from THQ based on the TV show.

DanceMasters: Konami's version of getting your groove down.

EA SPORTS Active 2: A fitness game with body tracking, heart rate data and the ability to share workout data. EA has gone all-out with this game, which sort of explains its $100 price tag.

Zumba Fitness: See a pattern yet? This is a dance fitness game.

Kinect Sports: Microsoft's version of Wii Sports.

MotionSports: This game from Ubisoft includes live in-game commentary and 40+ sports challenges.

DECA SPORTS FREEDOM: While this game only has 10 sporting events, there is a focus on making it feel as real as possible. Figure skating should be interesting.

Kinect Joy Ride: Controller-free kart racing.

ADRENALIN MISFITS: This racing/battle game focuses on fantasy worlds.

Fighters Uncaged: Fulfill your Fight Club fantasy without the bloody concussions and stitches.

SONIC FREE RIDERS: Yup, Sega is bringing Sonic the Hedgehog to Kinect.

What do you think of Kinect's launch day lineup? Let us know in the comments.

Moog Filtatron for iPhone Makes Wonderful Noise

Moog Filtatron

Here at Switched, we love things that make noise. And when it comes to noise-making, few names have a stronger pedigree than Moog. The granddaddy of electronic music has released Filtatron, an iPhone app based around the classic Moog Ladder Filter that gives the company's analogue effects and synths their distinctive sound. You can use the digitally modeled classic filter to manipulate input from your iPhone's mic, recorded audio samples or the built-in oscillator. Filtatron even has a small bank of effects for adding distortion or delay to your sounds. While the preset samples and sound settings are fun to play with, you really unlock the power of the app when you start processing tones from the oscillator and your own recorded clips by manipulating them with the pads. You can change practically any settings or levels using the pads, allowing you to sweep through delay levels, play the oscillator or pump up the distortion. The pads are split in two so that you can alter two settings at once.

In our short hands-on with Filtatron, we were impressed with its responsiveness and the quality of the sounds it produced. Our one complaint is that some of the controls were tough to manipulate on the iPhone's tiny screen. (An iPad version should help to alleviate that problem.) Grab Filtatron for $4.99 if you're in the mood to create your own beautiful dissonance, but be sure to check out our hands on video after the break (as well as the official teaser from Moog).

Web OS 2.0 and Palm Pre 2 Get Official, France Gets First Dibs

Angry Birds
The first webOS-based handset released since HP snatched up Palm was officially announced today and, in addition to packing more powerful innards, the Pre 2 ushers in the era of webOS 2.0. WebOS 2.0 boasts what HP calls "true multitasking" (taking an obvious potshot at Apple's iOS), support for Flash 10.1 and HP Synergy for syncing your data from several services.

In addition, the Pre 2 features Exhibition, which lets you trigger various actions -- such as opening a photo slideshow or displaying your daily agenda -- when you connect the Pre 2 to the Touchstone Charging Dock. WebOS 2.0 also adds Just Type, a feature that allows you to start composing status updates, e-mails, or searches before you even open an app. (We haven't seen it in action yet, but we imagine that you just start typing as webOS presents you with a set of actions to perform.) Developers will also be able to integrate Just Type with other apps.

Vertu Constellation Quest shows up at the FCC, running Symbian and looking pleasantly outrageous

Vertu Constellation Quest
Ah, Vertu, where would we be without you? Richer, to be sure, but so very bored. Vertu's QWERTY-packing Constellation Quest has just gotten the FCC's stamp of approval, and in addition to the typical beauty shots the FCC includes, there's also a detailed manual that shows the phone to be running some heavily skinned version of Symbian.

The phone has HSDPA data and WiFi, and Vertu is even packing along a 32GB microSD card. There's still plenty we don't know about the phone, like when it will hit stores and how many arms and legs it will cost, but for now we're just happy to have "cray Uncle Vertu" around for the party.
