Champions League Special: Who Are The Favourites After Matchday One?

Saturday, 18 September 2010

Champions LeagueBarcelona have consolidated their position as Champions League favourites following their 5-1 demolition of Panathinaikos. The 2009 winners are unchanged @ 3.50.

Real Madrid and Chelsea also got their bids underway with wins against Ajax and Zilina respectively. Los Blancos have shifted from 5.50 to 6.0 and are joint second favourites with the Blues @ 6.0.

English clubs Manchester United and Arsenal had contrasting starts. Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils were held to a stalemate at home to Rangers while the 2006 finalists Arsenal romped to a 6-0 victory over Braga.

United are unchanged @ 9.0 with the Gunners shifting from 15.0 to a shorter 11.0 to be lifting the trophy in London next May.

Last season's finalists Inter haven't moved despite only drawing against FC Twente. The Nerazzurri are 15.0 to retain the trophy and you'll get odds of 13.0 on Bayern Munich repeating their success of 2001 a decade on.

The biggest movers are Milan, whose odds have been slashed from 34.0 to 19.0 after the signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho. Milan got their campaign off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win over Auxerre.

Punters looking for an outsider may be considering Valencia, who hammered Bursaspor 4-0 in Turkey. Finalists in 2000 and 2001, the La Liga side are 51.0 (down from 67.0) to win the Champions League for the first time. They are an enticing 2.60 to win their group which includes Manchester United.

Meanwhile long shots Zilina have seen their odds doubled from 501.0 to 1001.0 after being dismantled by Chelsea.
