SBY hopes Tarakan riot will not end like Sampit

Commenting on a recent ethnic clash between Bugis and Tidung in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hoped that the incident would not turn into an incident like Sampit 10 years ago.

In order to avoid a standoff, Yudhoyono urged all parties to work comprehensively to settle the intercommunity dispute.

“I really hope [the Sampit incident] will not happen again. All officials must go into the field and make real efforts [to resolve the situation],” Yudhoyono said in his office Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
After receiving a report from National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri and the National Military commander Adm. Agus Suhartono, Yudhoyono requested all central and local administrators, as well as the members of the conflicting communities, to work together to solve the matter and bring peace to the city.
