Central Florida Fair honors culinary arts

Tilt-A-Whirl here I come. The Central Florida Fair opens Thursday, and I'm a sucker for midway rides and the vendor food — which I would never eat any other time of the year. The fair offers dozens of daily chef demonstrations as well as a visual feast of culinary home economics at its best with competition for baked goods, canned fruits and decorated cakes.

The fair runs through March 6. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 students and seniors, $5 for children ages 6-10. Ride bands are $20-$25. Central Florida Fair in Orlando Feb. 24 – Mar. 6

Orlando is no longer known for cattle ranching and orange groves, but it still upholds the 101 year old tradition of hosting the Central Florida Fair February 24 – March 6, 2011 at the Central Florida Fairgrounds just three miles west of downtown Orlando on Colonial Drive (State Road 50).

For a fraction of the cost of the Orlando theme park attractions, visitors can enjoy festival food, midway games and rides and live entertainment, plus traditional agricultural fare such as livestock shows, exhibits, demonstrations and competitions. ( Read Central Florida Fair more... )

WHAT: Luckily for our health, the annual excuses for gorging on funnel cake and fried sweets are few and far between. Luckily for our inner child, the main one is coming up: The Central Florida Fair hits Orlando this Thursday with the usual array of livestock, homespun entertainment and — of course — gravity-defying rides designed to test your intestinal fortitude (as if the aforementioned foods haven't already done that).
