Robert F. Martina : Reagan on Mount Rushmore ?
Some are suggesting that Ronald Reagan be placed on Mount Rushmore. Really? As I recall he:
# Initiated so-called free trade.
# Had a Japanese auto lobbyist as his national (in)security adviser and deputy campaign manager and started the export of our jobs and the devaluation of the dollar.
# Doubled the national debt with trickle-down, voodoo economics. (Bush Sr., who coined this term, got stuck with the bill.)
# Had more of his staff indicted and convicted than any president in history (yes, look it up). ( Read Mount Rushmore more... )
Faces In Stone: The Mount Rushmore of The NHL Rookies
Nothing says America like apple pie, a picture of Uncle Sam, the required US History class high schoolers take, and Mount Rushmore.
Mount Rushmore is a shrine to some of the greatest Presidents of the United States, and only four crack the list. So as I was thinking about this marvelous mountain, I thought, "How can I relate this to the NHL (Yeah I think of some crazy things during US History class. Sorry Mrs. Adams)?" Reagan celebration: No mugs on Mount Rushmore, please
We are now celebrating the anniversary of Ronald Reagan, who, if the corporate press is anything to go by, came down from heaven exactly 100 years ago to save us all. They are making such a fuss about Ronnie that there is even a proposal to add his handsome features to the rogues' gallery on Mount Rushmore, in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
I have vivid memories of President Reagan, who to me was an older, earlier version of George W. Bush but without the brains. I well remember his famous trickle down theory of economics, whereby the wealth deriving from massive tax concessions to the super rich was supposed to trickle down to the rest of us below. Why Ronald Reagan doesn't deserve a place on Mt Rushmore
Americans celebrated Ronald Reagan’s 100th anniversary yesterday. The 40th President of the United States has never been so popular: he is a serious candidate for Mount Rushmore, Republicans vie with one another for the ” heir to Ronald Reagan” label, and when John McCain wanted to praise his erstwhile running mate, Sarah Palin, he conceded that she was a “divisive figure, but then, so was one Ronald Reagan”.
President Reagan is certainly a divisive figure in our home. In one camp stands my husband, a Russian and Eastern Europe correspondent for over 20 years and author of The New Cold War. He sees Reagan (and Palin, whom he deems Reagan’s ideological heiress) as the Great Liberator, the Western leader who dared to stand up for democracy and the American Way in the face of Soviet totalitarianism. Edward assures me that wherever you go, East of the Danube, you find patriots who fought against Soviet occupation. They revere the holy trinity of Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and John Paul II as the force that delivered captive nations from their red foe. ( Read Mount Rushmore more... )
