Daytona 500 Start Time, The Daytona 500 drops the green flag Sunday afternoon in the 53rd annual Great American Race. It’s the Super Bowl of NASCAR, but it also represents the beginning of a new season, and he gives a lot of drivers new hope to qualify for the Chase for the Championship and a chance to run the champion five times Sprint Cup, Jimmie Johnson.
This is certainly not the day of Johnson if, as the No. 48 was not all that great of a story running here at Daytona International Speedway. He only qualified 23rd with uncertain returns in the Budweiser Shootout earlier this week, and it is a situation where he is just hoping to turn into another of these prototypes consistent Top 15 finishes makes it so oh dangerous. Daytona 500: Gatorade Duel starting lineups set
There was a time when it took a rocket scientist--well, almost--to understand the intricacies of the Daytona 500 qualifying procedure. Time trials alone didn't set the grid, nor did the two qualifying races on the Thursday before the Sprint Cup Series season opener. Provisional starting spots were also factored in, and overall qualifying speeds were part of it, too. NASCAR officials often needed a couple of tries to get the lineup right.
Things are slightly less complex now that the top 35 in owner points automatically make the field. Here's how the system works overall: ( Read Daytona 500 Start Time more... )

Daytona 500 - Qualifying times
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start from pole for this year's Daytona 500, on the 10th anniversary of his father's death in a crash during the event in 2001.
Dale Earnhardt Jr claimed pole position for the 53rd Great American Race with a lap of 186.89mph, the first time in his career that he has taken pole position at a restrictor plate vent, and coming on the emotional tenth anniversary of the death of his father during the 2001 Daytona 500.
The lap time of 48.364s was just 0.032s ahead of his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon (185.966mph), who will take the other spot on the front row alongside Earnhardt. Both drivers have new pit chiefs this year - Steve Letarte and Alan Gustafson for Earnhardt and Gordon respectively - and this was immediate pay-off for the reshuffle within the team over the off-season. The duo gave team owner Rick Hendrick his third front-row sweep for the Daytona 500 and his seventh pole position in total, Mark Martin having claimed pole last year for the team.
