Slam Dunk Contest 2011 Video: JaVale McGee Dunks Two Balls
All four competitors brought it from the start during Saturday night's Slam Dunk Contest, throwing everything but the kitchen sink out for the world to see with each of their first dunks. JaVale McGee, of the Washington Wizards, absolutely brought it after having Chris Webber tell the crowd they were about to rewrite history as another hoop was brought out. This time, instead of dunking on a 12-foot hoop like Dwight Howard, McGee upped the ante, getting more than a little creative. ( Read Slam Dunk Contest 2011 Video more... )

Slam Dunk Contest Winners Spud Webb, Dominique Wilkins, Josh Smith Give Hawks Something To Be Proud Of
The Atlanta Hawks have not built a history worth bragging about, so you take what you can get. And tonight, during the 2011 Slam Dunk Contest, Hawks fans have a chance to enjoy a little national relevance. The dunk contest is the highlight of NBA All-Star Weekend, but it might not have gotten off the ground if not for Atlanta players.
Take a look at the list of past contest champions. The Hawks have won the dunk contest four times, which was more than any other team until the New York Knicks reached four last year. More critically for the contest's viability, a pair of feuds in the 1980s boosted it from a sideshow to the main event, and both of those involved Hawks. ( Read Slam Dunk Contest 2011 Video more... )

Video: “Best” Dunks From Awful 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest
Every single year you wonder if the NBA Slam Dunk Contest (presented by Sprite!) can possibly get any worse, and every year it does.
It’s hard to figure out where exactly this competition went wrong. While no particular year springs to mind as the official turning point, it would probably be somewhere around the year where props began to be allowed. That’s when interesting, amazing dunks suddenly become secondary to which idiotic baked good, or stuffed animal or dumb costume you could drudge up.
This year was no different from the past few disappointing efforts. There was some little kid who I’m pretty sure is the lead rapper from the Far East Movement losing his teddy bear in the rim. And Blake Griffin with the simplest dunk in the world over the simplest car in the world. Plus whatever other forgettable antics occurred during that spectacle last night. 2011 Slam Dunk Contest: Video Of JaVale McGee's Superior Performance
The NBA's much hyped dunk contest this year ended up as a kind of a joke. Blake Griffin, who arguably shouldn't have made it into the final two, won the thing thanks mostly to his pre-contest hype rather than his actual performance. His gimmicky "dunk over a car" sounds a lot more impressive than it actually was.
As Charles Barkley pointed out afterward, it "wasn't that good of a dunk." If you change the wording to "jumped kind of to the side of the hood of a car" it's not so exciting. Add in his blatant copy of a Vince Carter dunk, and the fact that he ended up settling for a watered down version of a tough dunk he failed 7 times earlier... and Blake ended up as kind of bust in the dunk contest, despite the fact he won.
