Local high school band informed trumpet player, arranger for Diana Ross

Gilbert Askey left Austin for good at age 17 in 1942, but the former Motown arranger, who received an Oscar nomination for his work with Diana Ross on "Lady Sings the Blues," says "Austin has never left me."

Although he has lived for 30 years in Australia, where his wife, Hellen, is from, the L.C. Anderson High School graduate comes back to visit once a year. His nickname is "Brother," and when he comes back to Austin, state Rep. Dawnna Dukes said, "Brother makes an effort to see everyone around from the old days." His two older sisters, Grace and Velma Jo, are still alive, as are friends that go as far back with Askey as the first grade at the Olive Street School. ( Read Diana Ross more... )

Diana Ross Makes TV Return On ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’

Diana Ross, 66, made her much anticipated first television performance in four years on today’s episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The Supremes icon made her appearance accompanied by all her children and grandson for the first time on Feb. 25.

Ross started the show off right singing her classic, “I’m Coming Out” and Oprah joined her on stage for a duet of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

“I have to really keep myself from going into the ugly cry,” Oprah said while interviewing Ross. “Because of how much this legend, this woman means to me and my life… I’m going to try to keep it together.” ( Read Diana Ross more... )

Diana Ross opens up on 'Oprah' show

Diana Ross appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" this afternoon in honor of the talk show host's farewell season, but she didn't come alone. The Supreme diva brought all five of her children — daughters Rhonda Ross Kendrick (her daughter by Berry Gordy Jr.), Tracee Ellis Ross and Chudney Ross, sons Ross Arne Naess and Evan Ross — as well as her first grandchild, Raif Henok Emmanuel Kendrick, Rhonda's son.

The show started with a date flashing across the screen, "Dec. 27, 1964" — the day Oprah saw Ross and the Supremes on "The Ed Sullivan Show." For a 10-year-old Oprah Winfrey to see three young girls who looked like her on television changed her life, she said tearfully. ( Read Diana Ross more... )
