'American Idol': Pia Toscano, Lauren Alaina & Thia Megia Wow the Judges
Wow, what a difference a TV mix can make. Watching last night's broadcast of "American Idol's" Top 12 guys was a good reminder of the stark contrast between how the performances feel in the studio and how they actually sound to the viewer at home. It may be something Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will have to address on Thursday's show, once they've had the chance to watch the episodes back.
They, in turn, might want to take a few of their comments back. Randy Jackson is, of course, well aware of the disparity, but also wasn't nearly as fawning over the Top 12 guys as his fellow judges. ( Read Pia Toscano more... )
'American Idol' Top 12 Girls: Thia Megia, Pia Toscano Show Star Power
The fellas had their chance on Tuesday night, so on Wednesday (March 2), this year's "American Idol" top 12 women took the stage in an effort to earn their place in the finals.
By night's end, Pia Toscano and Ashthon Jones emerged as the ones to beat, while teens Thia Megia and Lauren Alaina appeared to have also punched their cards into the top 10.
Beyoncé impersonator Ta-Tynisa Wilson, 20, did the honors and went first, singing Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," while wearing a geometric-patterned poodle skirt. Though she looked the part, her thin, squeaky vocals were way off and the band's tinny new wave arrangement did her no favors. ( Read Pia Toscano more... )
Pia Toscano gets a standing O with a Pretenders tune
Pia Toscano gets tonight's pimp spot for her version of The Pretenders' I'll Stand by You (also covered by Carrie Underwood). Chrissie Hynde's songs are a lot tougher to sing than they seem, because Chrissie's phrasing is so off the beat that most other singers sound stilted when they try them.
Pia straightens the song out a little bit but not too much. She also nails the modulation into the last chorus effortlessly, and then she goes for a couple of big ol' glory notes. It's a classic old-school Idol performance. ( Read Pia Toscano more... )
Pia Toscano Brings 'American Idol' Audience To Its Feet
Judges praise 21 year old's powerhouse Performance of the Pretenders' 'I'll Stand By You.'
On a night when Thia Megia gave a quiet, confident performance well beyond her 15 years and teen Lauren Alaina was compared to both Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, it was nevertheless Pia Toscano who stole the show on Wednesday's (March 2) "American Idol."
Toscano, who anchored the episode with the final performance of the evening, took on the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" and knocked it out of the park, building to a series of powerful glory notes in the closing moments that brought the entire studio audience — her fellow contestants and the judges included — to its feet. Pia Toscano: Blowing The Crowd And Judges Away
On Tuesday night the guys had their chance to shine on the American Idol stage. Wednesday night was the night for the top 12 ladies though. I wonder why this night gets better rating than the guys night? Maybe it partly had something to do with Pia Toscano.

‘American Idol’ judges love Pia Toscano, split on Haley Reinhart
Talk about a glory note: Pia Toscano, a New York makeup artist who had tried out for “Idol” twice before, earned the year’s first official standing ovation for a flawless take on “I’ll Stand By You” that built to a crushing crescendo. “You were saving that for when it counts!” exulted judge Jennifer Lopez.
Other standouts included bluesy Lauren Turner, 15-year-old Thia Megia, and country rocker Lauren Alaina. Randy Jackson described Alaina as a combo of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. ( Read Pia Toscano more... )
Pia Toscano’s Star Explodes After “American Idol,” Dominates All Buzz
Although Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery were at the top of the buzz heap after Tuesday night’s “American Idol,” several contestants made impressions and spurred interest from online fans. The race is not nearly as close after Wednesday’s top 12 female show.
By 11:15 PM on Tuesday night, Lusk, McCreery, Casey Abrams, Paul McDonald and Brett Loewenstern had all made impacts on Google’s Trending chart. As of 11:15 on Wednesday, the only female garnering interest is Pia Toscano. ( Read Pia Toscano more... )
