Autopsy: Mich. hoops player dies of cardiac arrest

FENNVILLE, Mich. (AP) - An autopsy confirms a Michigan high school basketball player who collapsed on the floor after making a game-winning shot died of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart.

Fennville star Wes Leonard is being remembered as an "all-American kid." His basket in overtime Thursday gave his team a perfect 20-0 record. But soon after the game ended, the 16-year-old junior fell to the gym floor, his life fading just a few moments after his victory layup. ( Read High School Basketball Player Dies more... )

Wes Leonard was a popular student and outstanding athlete. Leonard made the winning shot during overtime for Fennville, which was the last game he would ever play.

A Holland Hospital spokeswoman says Wes Leonard, 16, collapsed Thursday night moments after a 57-55 overtime win against Bridgman. Leonard scored the winning basket in overtime, to lead the Blackhawks to victory. Fennville completed a perfect 20-0 regular season.

Wes Leonard: High School Basketball Player Collapses After Game-Winning Shot

A western Michigan high school basketball player, Wes Leonard, collapsed and died on the court after making the winning shot for his team.

Leonard, 16, died Thursday night (Mar. 3), but a cause of death is still unknown. CPR was administered on the young boy after he scored the game-winning layup in a final score of 57-55 over Bridgman.

“Obviously, in the midst of celebration, I think shocking is exactly the word,” Fennville Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer told the paper before Leonard’s ambulance left the high school. ( Read High School Basketball Player Dies more... )

Local sports teams reflect on Fennville High School basketball player's death

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (03/04/11)--A western Michigan community is mourning the sudden loss of a star athlete after he collapsed in cardiac arrest on the court.

Wes Leonard, 16, of Fennville High School, went down just moments after scoring the game-winning layup during the team celebration.

An autopsy shows an enlarged heart led to his sudden death. His coach and teammates are struggling to understand.
