New Bible Updates Language; 'Booty' Falls By Wayside

The Old Testament will have a new look in the next edition of the New American Bible, one of the most popular English-language Bibles. And it'll also have some big changes — in many cases, words like "booty" and "virgin" are removed in the new translation.

Scholars translating from ancient Hebrew and Greek for the new Bible decided that the meaning of those words had shifted in the 40 years since the Old Testament was last updated in the New American Bible. ( Read New Bible more... )

New Bible Will Be Without "Booty" and "Virgin"

A new bible published with the help of a leading catholic organization will be without a couple choice words. While words like "booty" may seem silly - imagine the stories contained in the bible without the word "virgin" being used.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has confirmed that its 2011 translation of the Bible will omit the word "booty" from a verse and replace "virgin" with "young woman."

The bishops group, based in Washington, said the latest edition of the New American Bible, due out March 9, will be more accurate and more accessible than previous versions, USA Today reported Wednesday. ( Read New Bible more... )

Two new major Bible translations being released

WASHINGTON -- The nation's Roman Catholic bishops are releasing their first new Bible in decades as Lent begins. The New American Bible, Revised Edition, will be available Wednesday, which is Ash Wednesday.

The latest version contains a new translation of the Old Testament -- the first such new translation in more than 40 years. The New Testament was updated in 1986 and is not changed in the new edition.

The translation effort started 17 years ago, prompted partly by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest known texts of Scripture. A group of more than 50 experts changed language and reordered passages to be closer to the original text and better reflect modern usage. ( Read New Bible more... )

New Bible to replace 'holocaust,' 'booty,' and 'cereal.' Why?

New Bible: a new Roman Catholic Church edition of the New American Bible will replace some words, revert to an earlier version of the 23rd Psalm, and include fresh notes of Church interpretation. A digital edition of this new bible will also be available next week. ( Read New Bible more... )
