Kessel OK with being last in line
RALEIGH -- It was a situation wrought with the potential for hurt feelings Friday night.
There sat Toronto's Phil Kessel and Colorado's Paul Stastny as the last two players available in the 2011 All-Star Player Fantasy Draft powered by Cisco.
Carolina's Eric Staal went to the podium inside the Raleigh Convention Center and announced that he was taking Stastny, which left Kessel with the dubious honor of being the last player taken in the draft.
If Kessel was bothered about it afterward, he wasn't showing it. ( Read Phil Kessel more... )
Kessel taken last in NHL All-Star draft
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Phil Kessel could only watch while every other player was picked in the NHL All-Star fantasy draft. Then, as he sat alone, Alex Ovechkin pulled out a cell phone and snapped a photo of the Toronto Maple Leafs forward.
Being a good sport, Kessel took it all in stride Friday night.
He didn't seem to mind becoming the first Mr. Irrelevant of the NHL All-Star game, insisting the bigger deal was making the All-Star team — it didn't matter which one — for the first time. Team Lidstrom and captain Nicklas Lidstrom picked Kessel with the 36th and final pick of the inaugural draft.
"I get to go out there and play, just go out there and play the game," Kessel said. "Honestly, (being picked last) doesn't matter. ... We're just happy to be here. It means you're doing pretty well, I guess." ( Read Phil Kessel more... )
All-Star draft: Cam Ward first, Sedins split up, Phil Kessel last
RALEIGH — The All-Star weekend got into full gear with Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom choosing up their sides. Staal kept the Carolina Hurricanes on one team and got his brother, too. The Sedins will play on opposite teams. How the draft and the day went: ( Read Phil Kessel more... )
2011 NHL All-Star Game: Phil Kessel Chosen Last, Will Face Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green
It can't feel good to be Phil Kessel tonight. Sure, he's an All-Star. And no one will ever be able to take that away from him. But he was also the final player chosen in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game fantasy draft tonight. 36th out of 36.
Many of us who are not professional athletes know the feeling. Only for us, being chosen last for dodgeball at recess wasn't quite as big a deal because the drafting wasn't broadcast on basic cable. ( Read Phil Kessel more... )
LEAFS' KESSEL PICKED LAST, SAYS HE'LL DONATE MONEY TO CHARITY
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Phil Kessel had no problem with being the last man standing at the end of the NHL's all-star draft.
The Toronto Maple Leafs forward was actually feeling pretty good after finding out he'd won a hybrid Honda CR-Z and US$20,000 for being the last of 42 all-stars to be selected on Friday night. Kessel was diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2006 and planned to donate his money to a cancer charity. ( Read Phil Kessel more... )
