Auburn Trees Poisoned: A College Rivalry Gone Too Far
Much to my dad’s dismay, I didn’t go to a college that had a football team. To this day, some of his greatest joy is derived from watching Penn State’s Nittany Lions take on just about anyone on a Saturday afternoon. My husband feels the same about LSU’s Tigers.
Still, I understand the loyalty to one’s college football team (kind of), and distracting kids from the rigors of academic life on the weekends can easily be a healthy hobby, but what I really don’t get is when the competition between teams escalates to anything beyond some salty language yelled in the parking lot to a fan wearing the enemy’s colors (and even then, I’m not sure I really get it). 3-point stance: Poisoning trees no prank
1. Pranks are one thing. What has happened at Auburn is no prank. Here’s hoping that the poisoning of the oaks at Toomer’s Corner will make every Alabama and Auburn fan rethink how they feel about the rivalry and realize how much they need each other. And here’s hoping that anyone venal, juvenile and mentally deficient enough to commit such an act is also stupid enough to brag about it and get caught. I’d say that’s a pretty good bet.
