San Francisco Snow: Hill Areas Get Dusting Of Snow

Hilly areas of San Francisco got a rare light dusting of snow, the National Weather Service said Saturday.

now fell briefly late Friday and early Saturday on the city’s Twin Peaks neighborhood and some other areas with higher elevations, meteorologist Mark Strobin said.

“A little bit up in the hills,” Strobin told The Associated Press. “It snowed down to about 400 feet.”

But there was only rain downtown and in other other areas of the near sea level city, and the snow that did fall disappeared rapidly.

The city last saw snow on the ground in 1976, when an inch fell. ( Read San Francisco Snow more... )

Record low temperatures follow snow in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Snow fell overnight in the highest spots of San Francisco, the Twin Peaks neighborhood, where elevations are about 900 feet above sea level, said AccuWeather.com meteorologists.

The snowfall coated the ground briefly, but quickly melted. No snow was observed in downtown San Francisco and AccuWeather.com meteorologist Dave Samuhel said the dusting would not count toward official records that show the last measurable snowfall in the area 35 years ago.

Trained spotters also reported snow in the San Joaquin Valley of California, according to the National Weather Service. ( Read San Francisco Snow more... )

San Francisco Snow Hoped For by Kids, But a General No-Show

Earlier this week, weather forecasters thought that San Francisco might see snow at sea level for the first time since 1976, but although there was some degree of snow, the dusting the city received was a disappointment.

At first, the San Francisco snow was to arrive on Friday, then Thursday night, and finally, back to Friday night. Instead, the snow hit only the hilly areas of San Francisco, which received a rare light dusting of snow, but hardly what had been hoped for by some and dreaded by others.

In 1976, areas around the San Francisco Bay Area received a decent amount of snow. It wasn't enough to cause huge pileups of snow, but speaking to those who were around at that time, and it was enough for children to play in, enough to solidly coat cars with a decent layer of snow, not just a dusting. It was enough enough for snowball fights of extended length. About an inch fell in San Francisco, itself, in 1976. ( Read San Francisco Snow more... )

San Francisco Snow Arrives Overnight After 35-Year Wait
San Francisco snow may seem like an urban legend. The sight of San Francisco snow hasn't been seen in a generation, but a bit of it finally formed overnight. This has already been a wild and destructive winter, as blizzards fell across the Northeast and the Midwest. But it is really an insane season when the West Coast gets a bit of white stuff, since that hasn't happened in 35 years. Yet after a whole day of waiting, the first San Francisco snow since 1976 fell after midnight today. ( Read San Francisco Snow more... )
