Harvey Updyke (MUG SHOT): Arrest Made in Toomer's Corner Tree Poisoning

(CBS/AP/WRBL) Police have released the mug shot of Harvey Almorn Updyke Jr, a 62-year-old unemployed man who is accused of the poisoning of the 130-year-old Toomer's Oaks, the landmark gathering place of Auburn University victory celebrations.

Updyke has been charged with one count of first-degree criminal mischief.

Bond was set at $50,000. If convicted, Updyke could face one to 10 years in prison.

University officials reported on Wednesday that the trees had been given "lethal amounts" of herbicide. ( Read Harvey Updyke more... )

Harvey Updyke Arrested For Toomer's Corner Poisoning, According To Report

A man named Harvey Updyke has been arrested for the lethal poisoning of Auburn’s Toomer’s Corner oak trees, according to a report by WTVM9 in Columbus, Ga. He will reportedly be charged with criminal mischief.

That charge will not satisfy any Auburn fan, few embarrassed Alabama fans, and pretty much anybody of any stripe, but it's actually a Class C felony that could mean up to 10 years in prison. Accused Auburn Tree Poisoner Harvey Almorn Updyke Is A Retired Texas State Trooper, According To Facebook

Harvey Almorn Updyke is quickly becoming the Southern United States’ most hated man. According to his Facebook page, he’s also retired Texas State Trooper.

Updyke, a 62-year-old Alabama fan who was arrested for poisoning Auburn University’s iconic oak trees, lists “Retired Texas State Trooper,” under his “Has worked at” section. He also lists Milton High as his high school, and says he lives in Mobile, Alabama.

We reached out to the Texas Department of Public Safety to see if there were any records of Updyke’s employment there. So far, we’ve been unable to get confirmation. ( Read Harvey Updyke more... )
