Bassmaster Classic 2011: Super Bowl of fishing takes to tricky Louisiana bayou

The Bassmaster Classic 2011 is the most prestigious bass-fishing event in the world, drawing 50 top fishermen to New Orleans in the wake of the BP oil spill. Oil is a nonfactor, organizers say.

Picking the right lure and using the right technique to coax monster bass out of the water won't be enough for this year's Bassmaster Classic 2011, the Super Bowl of angling.

Wedging sleek bass boats around the Louisiana marshlands may present the biggest challenge of this year's tournament, which returns to the New Orleans area for the first time since 2003. Swift tides make the area particularly bass-rich, but treacherous for the 50 fishermen who qualified for the tourney. Bassmaster Classic 2011: 41st annual competition begins

(CBS) - 50 of the best anglers in the world are on the hunt this Friday off the coast of New Orleans with one goal in mind: master the bass.

The biggest competitive fishing tournament, the Bassmaster Classic 2011, is underway down in New Orleans. Yup, competitors are backcasting their rods. Anglers are deadticking.

Ummm, yeah, I have no idea what I'm writing about. I don't know squat about fishing, let alone competitive fishing. I fully admit all of those things.

2011 Bassmaster Classic: Aaron Martens leads after day one

Day one of the 2011 Bassmaster Classic is finished, folks. Aaron Martens holds the lead at 20 pounds, 7 ounces. He also hauled in the biggest fish of the day at 5 pounds, 9 ounces.

Aaron Martens of Alabama leads Bassmaster Classic

Aaron Martens of Alabama took a lead of just more than 1 pound Friday on the first day of the Bassmaster Classic, the world championship of bass fishing being held on the Louisiana Delta.

Martens pulled in 20 pounds, 7 ounces, keeping him in front of Scott Rook of Little Rock, Ark., with 19-6. Rook edged ahead of defending champion Kevin VanDam, who had 19-3 for third place.

Ending the day in fourth with 18-0 was Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kan. Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., was fifth with 16-12. ( Read Bassmaster Classic 2011 more... )

The Bassmaster Classic 2011 Gets Started

The Bassmaster Classic 2011 starts today, giving us the opportunity to watch 50 of the best people in freshwater fishing competing during the three days of the event. Bassmaster Classic 2011, Bassmasters Classic starting today. Some of the top anglers will gather in New Orleans to Bayou Segnette State Park. The Classic starts today and a champion will be crowned Sunday, January 20. There are 50 qualifiers in the classic, with six having won the tournament before.
