HISD schools closed Feb. 4

The Houston Independent School District said that schools in the district will dismiss at regular times Thursday, but that all schools will be closed on Feb. 4.

All athletic events, after school activities and field trips scheduled for Thursday and Feb. 4 have been cancelled. HISD offices will also be closed on Feb. 4. Thursday evening classes at Liberty High School, HISD Twilight Schools and New Aspirations are also cancelled. ( Read HISD more... )

HISD, 3 other Texas districts laud it for boosting math

Teachers who enter the profession through the Teach for America program are more likely than their colleagues to leave after two years, but they appear to help high school students make bigger gains in math, according to a new study of four Texas districts.

The report, released Tuesday, puts Teach for America in the spotlight as state lawmakers must decide whether to give the nonprofit another $8 million. The Legislature's early budget plans for the next biennium eliminate money for the program.

About 1,000 teachers — a small fraction of the state's teaching force today — came through Teach for America. The Peace Corps-like program recruits recent graduates from top colleges to teach for at least two years in needy schools. ( Read HISD more... )

HISD Closed Tomorrow; No Early Dismissal Today

The experts all agree: Snow, icy rain and sleet are coming our way.

Which may mean nothing much, but in this case the experts seem pretty sure of themselves.

If the predictions come true, rush hour this evening will be bad, but rush hour tomorrow will be worse. Unless, of course, schools and businesses decide it's better to keep their people at home. HISD Schools Closed on Friday

HOUSTON - The Houston Independent School District, including Fort Bend and Galveston ISDs, say they will be closed on Friday due to the threat of wintry weather.

In addition, there will be no after school activities on Thursday.

Fort Bend ISD announced their decision to opt out of Friday classes on Thursday around 4:30 p.m.

HISD's announcement came late Thursday morning as forecasters predicted the Houston area would see snow and sleet heading into early Friday. ( Read HISD more... )

Houston ISD considers cash rewards to employees who give early warning that they're quitting

Employees who notify the Houston school district early of their intent to leave their jobs may see cash rewards of up to $2,500 under a new proposal.

The proposal, according to the Houston Independent School District, would allow the district to identify vacant positions and make staffing changes earlier, which would help the school system plan next year’s budget. ( Read HISD more... )

HISD, This may mean nothing more, but in this case, the experts seem fairly confident. If the forecast holds peak hours, the evening will be bad, but tomorrow’s rush hour will be worse. Unless, of course, schools and businesses decide it’s best to keep their people at home. Seeing how the weather forecasters say we’ll all wake up to a winter landscape, which may be what is happening. We will keep you updated on school closings and other cancellations.
