Waste Management Open

Waste Management Open Finally Underway, Tom Gillis On Fire

The Waste Management Open is finally underway in Arizona at TPC Scottsdale, after a four-hour frost delay. The writers at PGATour.com say that it’s still very cold — hovering around 39 degrees — but the greens have thawed out and players are braving the elements. Tom Gillis seems to be quite warm as he has posted three birdies in the first four holes on his scorecard. This course is considered to be fairly easy, last year it was ranked as the 14th easiest on the tour, and interestingly, Tiger Woods is not on it.

You’d think he would schedule himself for this course, but evidently not. Phil Mickelson is on board, currently through one hole having started on the back nine, and spoke yesterday about his goal to win 50 Tour events. Having already won the Phoenix Open twice, it’s entirely possible he could notch up his 39th win here this weekend. ( Read Waste Management Open more... )

Local Knowledge: 2011 Waste Management Open

The biggest party in golf takes place this week at TPC Scottsdale with the playing of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Before things get too crazy, we caught up with PGA Director of Golf Greg Wolf for a little Q&A.

PGA.com: As always, thank you for joining us, Greg. The Waste Management Open is always one of the most anticipated stops on the PGA Tour schedule. It’s just so different from every stereotype associated with golf – quiet, slow, older people following along. Please, tell our readers why those stereotypes don’t apply during the Waste Management Open.

Wolf: I forget which TOUR Players said this a few years ago, but he said it's a big party with a golf tournament lost in the middle. What other golf tournament kicks you out two hours after they stop playing? Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of people here to see the best golfers in the world and those players do deliver. If you want a quiet, slow-paced event, that can be found on some holes on the golf course. But if you want a party atmosphere, this is the place to be. ( Read Waste Management Open more... )

Balls in the Air: Waste Management Open

Welcome to the Phoenix Open, the Greatest Show on the Frost, the Tour’s Party Stop, where golf is secondary for the fans and beer is primary. Unfortunately, we’ve had a chilly front come through Scottsdale the past few days. Wednesday’s pro-am was canceled because the greens were frozen. Chances of play on Thursday kicking off as scheduled appear very slim. Golfers playing in the morning wave, check the phones for text message updates and then go back to sleep. Guys in the afternoon wave should just be on-call starting around noon, but realize the odds are slim that they’ll tee off. Bring games and iPads! ( Read Waste Management Open more... )

Waste Management Phoenix Open golf updates

Phil Mickelson drains a 14-footer for another birdie on the 7th hole, taking him to 5 under and into a three-way tie for second. He now has six birdies on his card. He has two holes to go.

WEATHER UPDATE: The temperature just reached its high of 46 degrees. The overnight low is expected to be 27. Friday's high is expected to be 46 again, but a tour official says it should warm up quicker in the morning that it did today. So, we will probably see another frost delay but maybe it doesn't for four hours like the one this morning. We shall see. ( Read Waste Management Open more... )
Waste Management Phoenix Open Preview and Fantasy Picks

Every year the tournament draws a solid field. Last year we saw Hunter Mahan win the event and over one million dollars. Although the purse is a good one, I believe the players come to this event for another reason. The 16th Hole.

The 16th Hole at the Waste Management Phoenix Open

The 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale has become one the biggest party holes in all of golf. Pictured above, the stands have been designed like a small stadium, totally enclosing the 162 yard par 3 and the fans take full advantage. ( Read Waste Management Open more... )

Waste Management Open

Waste Management Open, (UKPA) – Phil Mickelson is the star attraction in Phoenix this week, but the noisiest of golf may well be its biggest applause for saving the new kid on the block. Jhonattan Vegas, the first Venezuelan to win a PGA Tour card, finished first and third the last two weeks and, in his first ever round with Tiger Woods himself scored by five.

Top of the money list with the first course and 1.2 million on the classification of FedEx Cup points and cons 187th in the world at 69 Th. As he himself says, “it was a dream come true – I just love it.” The 26-year-old even its president Hugo Chavez speaks enthusiastically about what he has already dismissed as “a bourgeois sport.” ( Read Waste Management Open more... )
