David Birney Was Abusive, Says Meredith Baxter

David Birney, Meredith Baxter's ex-husband, was violent during their marriage, the actress revealed in her new memoir, Untied.

Baxter, 63, says that Birney, 71, her husband from 1974 to 1989, was abusive while they were married. They starred together in the short-lived 1970s sitcom Bridget Loves Birney, which only lasted one season.

"It was so sudden and unexpected, I couldn't tell you which hand hit me, or even how hard. I do recall thinking, 'I'd better not get up because he's going to hit me again,'" she wrote. (CBS) - In a new memoir, actress Meredith Baxter claims her "Bridget Loves Bernie" co-star and real-life husband David Birney abused her and struck her more than once.

"It was so sudden and unexpected, I couldn't tell which hand hit me, or even how hard," she says in "Untied," People magazine reports. "I do recall thinking, 'I'd better not get up because he's going to hit me again.'"
