Betty Garrett, Blacklisted Musical Actress, Dead at 91
Betty Garrett, a star of stage and screen throughout the second half of the 20th century, died in Los Angeles yesterday at the age of 91, according to her son Garrett Parks.
The actress was in good health until Friday, having taught her musical comedy class at Los Angeles' Theater West on Wednesday, but was taken to Los Angeles' Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center with heart trouble on Friday. Betty Garret has graced the Broadway stage and played Frank Sinatra’s love interest twice onscreen, but according to her son Garrett Parks, the actress passed away Sunday (Feb. 13).
The 91-year-old actress most likely died from an aortic aneurysm.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Betty Garrett, the vivacious Broadway star who played Frank Sinatra’s sweetheart in two MGM musicals before her career was hampered by the Hollywood blacklist, has died in Los Angeles, her son said Sunday. She was 91.
Garrett died Saturday at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, most likely from an aortic aneurysm, said her son, Garrett Parks. Garrett had been in good health and taught her usual musical comedy class at Theater West, the non-profit organization she helped found, on Wednesday night, but Friday checked into the hospital with heart trouble, and died with her family at her side the following morning. We’ve just learned that veteran character actress Betty Garrett passed away early this morning at the age of 91. The movie musical legend died at UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, California with her family by her side.
Born in 1919, Garret was encouraged to pursue a career on stage after high school by her bishop. A friend of her mother’s also arranged for an interview with Martha Graham who then in turn recommended Garrett for a scholarship at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Betty Garrett, who died on February 12 aged 91, was a vivacious Broadway star best known for playing Frank Sinatra's sweetheart in On The Town (1949) before her career became mired in the Hollywood blacklist controversy of the early 1950s.
Her troubles began in 1951 when American congressmen forced her husband, the actor Larry Parks, to testify about his earlier membership of the Communist Party. Parks had earned stardom and an Academy Award nomination as best actor for his dynamic portrayal of the singer Al Jolson in the film The Jolson Story (1946). But in 1951, he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and admitted that he had joined the Communist Party in 1941 and left in 1944 or 1945. ( Read Betty Garrett more... )
