Groundhog Day 2011: Punxsutawney Phil Returns to Prognosticate Weather

Punxsutawney Phil, the legendary rodent that foretells the weather every year on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, will soon emerge from his burrow as the holiday approaches.

Before sunrise on Wednesday, Punxsutawney Phil will appear for the 125th time in the role of weather prognosticator. The 'seer of seers' will then predict the nature of winter's end from a temporary burrow erected at Gobbler’s Knob, in a rural area about two miles east of Punxsutawney, Pa. Groundhog Day 2011: Groundhog Day with Malverne Mel

Groundhog Day is on Wednesday and you don’t have to turn on the news to find out just how close–or far away–spring is.

Enter: Malverne Mel.

That’s right. Long Island has it’s very own weather predicting groundhog and he lives in Malverne. ( Read Ground Hog Day 2011 more... )

Groundhog Day 2011: Punxsutawney Phil Cares Not for Global Warming

Much like Christ’s resurrection on The Third Day, Groundhog Day 2011 is an inevitability.

Being sold on the importance of Groundhog Day as a child scarred me for life. To this day I can’t comprehend why so much enthusiasm was generated for a holiday that essentially took place before any of us woke up, as the sun-scared woodchuck emerged from his hole to forage for food, maybe splash around in a stream, poop, and head back from whence he came, all before 7 a.m. ( Read Ground Hog Day 2011 more... )

Groundhog Day 2011: Should Punxsutawney Phil Be Fired ?

If you don't know who Punxsutawney Phil is, you've been living in a hole (or perhaps a burrow) for the last couple decades.

He's easily the most famous of all the prognosticators that we turn to over and over again for the annual Groundhog Day prediction: Will spring come early, or will we have to suffer another six weeks of winter?

And the little guy is good -- he's even been featured in a major motion picture! ( Read Ground Hog Day 2011 more... )

Groundhog Day 2011 in eastern Pennsylvania will star a stuffed animal

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Sammi III, the prognosticating groundhog in Stroudsburg’s West End section, made last year’s Groundhog Day prediction from her deathbed. This year, a different groundhog will make a prediction from beyond the grave.

Members of Groundhog Lodge No. 6 have been unable to find a replacement for Sammi III, who died on Groundhog Day in 2010 after making one last forecast in Monroe County. The organizers of the annual celebration will rely Wednesday on a stuffed Sammi I, or “Pudgie,” who died in the aftermath of a 1996 parade.“We have to try something, for the fun of it and the amusement,” said Groundhog Lodge No. 6 weatherman Harold Kreger. How big will the Groundhog Day winter storm be? 'We'll get hit no matter how you slice it'

GRAND RAPIDS -- We don't like weather hype and suspect you don't either. But the Groundhog Day winter storm 2011 is making news already - and it hasn't even happened yet.

To separate fact from fluff for the approaching winter storm, here's a Q and A from the National Weather Service, courtesy of meteorologist Brandon Hoving in Grand Rapids. ( Read Ground Hog Day 2011 more... )

Groundhog Day 2011: Use Students' Robot

Last year, PETA issued a Groundhog Day challenge, and students at Pennsylvania's Lafayette College responded to it by inventing a robot that can detect shadows. The students plan to unveil their creation this week.

We think that using a cyber shadow-detector is a great alternative to yanking a frightened groundhog out of a fake burrow every February and waving him around in front of a boisterous crowd as cameras flash in his eyes. Groundhogs avoid human contact and spend their days digging and burrowing. In February, they should be midway through their winter hibernation, not dodging the paparazzi. EASEUS Groundhog Day & New Years Eve Blessings

NEW YORK, Jan 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- February 4, 1841 - from Morgantown, Berks County (Pennsylvania) storekeeper James Morris' diary..."Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks' nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."

Every year, in the Punxsutawney town of Pennsylvania, the most famous "citizen," groundhog Phil, is to celebrate the Groundhog Day with Americans and predict when spring will come. ( Read Ground Hog Day 2011 more... )

Groundhog Day 2011

Punxsutawney Phil will peek his head out of the ground this Wednesday for Groundhog Day 2011. This year, Phil is in great company. He’s joined by a handful of other four-legged prognosticators, which includes a single which is stuffed.

Just much like the movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray, the day remains an incredibly huge, festive celebration for that town’s natives. It is also a festive celebration for guests. Even though we had been there, we often stopped by the Groundhog Zoo (yes, there is certainly a complete zoo devoted to the groundhog), and took photos at the Town Square with the greater than life statue from the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil.
