University of Maryland Extension: Garden Q&A

Q: Suddenly animal holes are appearing along the foundation in back of our home. They’re about three inches wide, but we’ve not seen any animals. My neighbor’s dogs and cats haven’t caught anything either. Could it be snakes? I feed birds and want to protect them.

A: The size of the holes and the location along walls suggests rats (snakes can’t dig holes.) Rats are very shy, cautious animals, living any place, city or country, where there is a food source. Because they normally live within 100 to 150 feet of their food supply, you need to locate the supply. Does your neighbor leave dog or cat food outside for his pets ? Strong second half, Kwame Morgan propel Hampton past UMES

— It was a tale of two halves for the Hampton University men's basketball team on Monday night against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Fortunately for the home team, a torrid second half and a strong performance from junior Kwame Morgan gave the home fans something to be happy about.

The junior from Largo, Md. scored 17 of his game-high 30 points in the second half and drained five 3-pointers as the Pirates pulled away from a pesky Hawks squad for a 78-66 win in front of 4,832 at the Hampton University Convocation Center. ( Read University of Maryland more... )

Norwood Students Perform Violin at University of Maryland

Students from the Norwood School performed the "Star Spangled Banner" on violin Sunday at a University of Maryland women's basketball game. The students, from ages 8-14, were selected after submitting an audition video. They were conducted by Norwood violin teacher Moyna Daley, a Potomac resident and University of Maryland mom.
