Medal of Freedom Recipients: George H.W. Bush, Bill Russell, Yo-Yo Ma and Others

Former President George H.W. Bush returned to the White House on Tuesday to pick up a Medal of Freedom from President Obama, who honored 14 other notables in business, labor, sports, the arts, government and literature.

"This year's Medal of Freedom recipients reveal the best of who we are, and who we aspire to be," Obama said.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush looked on as her husband -- the 41st president and father of the 43rd president -- was hailed by the 44th for his sky diving and his service to the nation over a 70-year span. ( Read Bill Russell more... )

President Obama pushes for Bill Russell statue

President Obama said today that he hopes Boston will build a statue of Celtics legend Bill Russell, endorsing an idea that supporters see as a way for the city not only to reconcile with one of its greatest sports heroes but with its long history of racial strife.

Obama embraced the idea at the White House, while giving Russell the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his legacy as an unyielding crusader for civil rights who had a complicated and often bitter relationship with the city to which he brought 11 championship banners. ( Read Bill Russell more... )

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama recognized a former president, a basketball legend and a civil rights hero Tuesday among the 15 recipients of the Medal of Freedom.

During a ceremony at the White House, Obama said the recipients represent, "the best of who we are and who we aspire to be."

The Medal of Freedom is the nation's highest civilian honor, and is presented to people who have made important contributions to U.S. national security, world peace, culture or other significant public or private endeavors. ( Read Bill Russell more... )
