Chicago Public Schools cancels classes due to winter weather
CHICAGO (AP) — The nation's third-largest school district will cancel classes Wednesday ahead of a winter storm expected to drop up to two feet of snow on Chicago.
Chicago Public Schools officials say they can't risk the safety of students and staff.
The district's interim chief executive officer, Terry Mazany, made the announcement Tuesday afternoon. He says the decision was made based on projections of continued heavy snowfall through the evening and overnight. ( Read Chicago Public Schools more... )
Storm halts flights at O’Hare, Midway; CPS cancels classes
(Crain's) — O’Hare International Airport had seen more than 1,300 flights canceled by midafternoon Tuesday and carriers at Midway Airport ceased operations, as a powerful winter storm took hold of Chicago.
The Chicago Public Schools announced there will be no classes Wednesday.
The Chicago Department of Aviation said both Midway and O’Hare remained open Tuesday afternoon, but most of the airlines planned to stop operating flights at O’Hare for the rest of the evening. Chicago Public Schools Closed Down Due to Blizzard
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will be closed for the first time in more than a decade on Wednesday due to the massive blizzard sweeping across the US.

Chicago declares first snow day in 12 years
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) announced that they will be having a snow day tomorrow, February 2, 2011. This snow day will be the first one CPS staff and students have enjoyed in twelve years.
The snow day is in response of the severe weather moving into the Chicago area. There will be upwards of 18" of snow in some areas.

The City of Chicago announced that according to the National Weather Service, the heavy snowfall should start on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, after 9:00 p.m. and should fall throughout the night.

Chicago's Daley calls on more federal support for education, doesn't sound like retiring mayor
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, hardly sounding like a man on the verge of retirement, on Tuesday called on the federal government to pony up more money to modernize school buildings, teach math and science, and expand global language and cultural programs like Chinese.
The Chicago Democrat, who will leave office in May after not seeking a seventh term, said the future economic success of Chicago and other cities hinges on a good education system.

My Scary Encounter With Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley
Chicago-style politics is infamous for kickbacks, dead people voting, and thuggery. Alas, it is not just a relic of the past. In fact, witness recent stories of Chicago city workers being hired or promoted based on how well they got voters to the polls and not how well they did their official jobs, children getting admitted to prestigious city schools based on political connections, and the granting of city contracts.
