Who Will Win Oscar Awards This Time ?
Although Oscar viewers, bloggers and critics predict many things as to who will win this year's Oscar awards, the only way to know the real winners is to wait till February 27th.
There are many polls in all the sites and even on social networking as to who will stars win this year but none, not even the Hollywood stock exchange can give accurate answers on the Oscar award winners. ( Read Oscar Nominations 2011 more... )
An Oscar Nominations Observation: Did ‘The Social Network’ Doom Itself ?
The Social Network over the past couple months has been unabashedly accepting every award and congratulatory remark that has been sent its way. It seemed the film was determined to be held in eminence amongst other films that are in awards contention this year. Since the film opened in early October it has been on an irrepressible ascent, exceeding every other film in critical acclaim (according to the online site Metacritic it scored an impressive 95). Oscar nominations are box office jewels for The King's Speech
By the middle of last week the online ticket seller Fandango declared The King's Speech to be its biggest attraction. The period drama jumped 76% in popularity with customers in the 24 hours after the Academy Award nominations were announced. The King's Speech bagged 12 of them and as a bona fide contender its box office is about to surge.
The impact of Oscar nominations on a movie's commercial life is a big deal. Hollywood estimates as much as one quarter of a film's overall take can come from that period between the Oscar nominations and the awards ceremony some four weeks later, in this case 27 February. To be effective the rule considers movies that are in release, the more recently the better, and discounts those that have begun their home entertainment roll-out. OSCAR RACE: Harvey Weinstein Q&A
What started as a wide open contest all those months ago remains a still impossible to predict one with just four weeks to go as The King’s Speech has erased The Social Network’s once-thought impenetrable lead. And if a photo finish is needed between these two front runners, could a third movie, a true spoiler, sneak in? The Deadline Team of Nikki Finke, Pete Hammond, and Mike Fleming have spent recent days interviewing the studio moguls to gauge their perspective on this very close Oscar race.
With recent Producers, Directors, and Screen Actors Guild wins and a whopping 12 Academy Award nominations (a number that only 11 other films in the Academy’s 83-year history have ever exceeded), The Weinstein Co's The King’s Speech is gaining momentum after The Social Network became the front runner by dominating critics awards and winning the Golden Globe. And with it, Harvey Weinstein climbs back into a place where he thrives, smack in the middle of a Best Picture Oscar race, his 20th to date. He won with The English Patient (1996) and Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Chicago (2002), but hasn’t been in the winner’s circle since he left Miramax and focused most of his attention on the ups and downs of his successor indie start-up. On a picturesque snowy day at the Stein Erikson in Deer Valley, Weinstein took time away from Sundance Film Festival dealmaking to talk to Deadline's Mike Fleming about his two contenders, The King's Speech and also The Fighter (Weinstein Co has foreign) : ( Read Oscar Nominations 2011 more... )

2011′s Worst Oscar Snubs
While I’m relatively pleased with this year’s Oscar nominations (so glad that great films like The King’s Speech, Inception, The Social Network and Black Swan are getting their due recognition), there are some deserving people who should have been on the list.
It’s really a shame that the Academy chose to ignore Garfield’s outstanding and thoughtful performance. I don’t think Jesse Eisenberg would have been as effective in this movie if he didn’t have Garfield to play off of. Andrew Garfield really nailed his performance while finding the right balance between smug jerk and dignified victim. ( Read Oscar Nominations 2011 more... )
