Egyptian Crowds, Egyptian Demonstrant

Caliphate

The term caliphate (from the Arabic خلافة or khilāfa, Turkish: Halife ) refers to the first system of government established in Islam, and represented the political unity of the Muslim Ummah (nation). In theory, it is a constitutional republic (see Constitution of Medina), meaning that the head of state (the Caliph) and other officials are representatives of the people and must govern according to Islamic law, which limits the government's power over citizens.

It was initially led by Muhammad's disciples as a continuation of the political system the prophet established, known as the 'rashidun caliphates'. It represented the political unity, not the theological unity of Muslims as theology was a personal matter. It was the world's first major welfare state. (Although this is also claimed by the Mauryan Empire, 800 years earlier).

A "caliphate" is also a state which implements such a governmental system. ( Read Caliphate more... )

In Egypt Protests, Beck Sees ... A New Islamic Caliphate And Communist Revolution ?

On his Fox News show on Monday, Glenn Beck unleashed a torrent of wild speculation about the consequences of the protests in Egypt. Beck described a world remade by a shift in global power:

BECK: I believe that I can make a case in the end that there are three powers that you will see really emerge. One, a Muslim caliphate that controls the Mideast and parts of Europe. Two, China, that will control Asia, the southern half of Africa, part of the Middle East, Australia, maybe New Zealand, and God only knows what else. And Russia, which will control all of the old former Soviet Union bloc, plus maybe the Netherlands. I'm not really sure. But their strong arm is coming. That leaves us and South America. What happens to us? ( Read Caliphate more... )
Freedom or the Seeds of a Caliphate ?

News reports coming out of Egypt state that there has been a prison break. The Brotherhood website, http://www.ikhwanweb.com/ , reported that 34 of their “political prisoners” were among the thousands that have escaped. For those of you who are ecstatic that the bells of democracy are ringing in Egypt and the dictator Mubarak will finally be removed must not have factored in the Brotherhood.

The Ikhwan has influenced the creation of global terrorist groups and the spiritual leaders that incite the masses. It is still unknown whether the Ikhwan is behind the protest or whether they are just tagging along hoping to sooner or later overtake it. That is the danger in revolutions; the chaotic and unorganized rage of the people can always be guided by unseen forces with unknown motivations. ( Read Caliphate more... )

Egypt: Caliphate Dreams and Strict Sharia

Tiny minority of excremists update: the muslim brotherhood will be the only winner, because no ‘democratic socialists’ can be found to compete……

A sobering reminder—based upon hard data—from an essay of mine published in April, 2007:
In a rigorously conducted face-to-face University of Maryland/ WorldPublicOpinion.org interview survey of 1000 Egyptian Muslims conducted between December 9, 2006 and February 15, 2007, 67% of those interviewed-more than 2/3, hardly a “fringe minority”-desired this outcome (i.e., “To unify all Islamic countries into a single Islamic state or Caliphate”). The internal validity of these data about the present longing for a Caliphate is strongly suggested by a concordant result: 74% of this Muslim sample approved the proposition “To require a strict [emphasis added] application of Shari’a law in every Islamic country.” ( Read Caliphate more... )
