CARLSTADT-Salvatore "Red" Picinich of Carlstadt passed away Sunday, Jan. 30. He was 63 years old. Mr. Picinich was born in Croatia and came to the United States in 1963. He was a former resident of Hoboken.

He was a baker at Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken since 1964 for the late Buddy Valastro Sr. and his son Buddy "The Cake Boss" Valastro. He was a dedicated employee of 45 years and received the Employee of the Century Award, which was presented to him at the 100th Anniversary of Carlo's Bakery. Sal Picinich, 'Cake Boss' celebrity, dies at 63

Sal Picinich of Carlstadt, the veteran baker who became an unexpected celebrity through the reality TV series “Cake Boss,” died Sunday. He was 63.

The cause was cancer, said his wife, Lucille.

Mr. Picinich, born on the Croatian island of Susak, worked 45 years at Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, where the TLC series is set. “Cake Boss” premiered in April 2009 and follows the adventures of Buddy “The Cake Boss” Valastro and his family and staff as they turn out big, fancy custom cake after big, fancy custom cake. The “Cake Boss” family and Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey lost a member this week. Sal Picinich lost his battle with cancer at the age of 63.

Sal of Carlo’s Bakery had been sick for a while, and after 45 years of working at the bakery, he stopped appearing on the show and working as much as he dealt with his illness.
